Harleen from Love Aaj Kal is a Brazilian By zoomdekho Anyone whos seen Love Aaj Kal, has come away wondering who Harleen is. Her name hasnt appeared in the credits. Evidently theres a good reason for it. This Punjabi kudi isnt a Punjabi kudi at all. Shes a 19-year-old Brazilian model called Giselle Monteiro who couldnt speak Hindi or dance to save her life, at one point in time. And director Imtiaz Ali didnt want to let out that a Brazilian was playing his Punjabi kudi — and so put off audiences. In the film, shes the one who is wooed and won by the Sardar Saif. And yes, the sequence showing her dancing at her engagement drove the entire unit up the wall. Apparently our Brazilian babe just couldnt get the steps right. Says Imtiaz, We wanted to put her through the paces with Sarojji (choreographer Saroj Khan). But it never happened. Sarojji didnt have the time. For a foreigner to get the Indian adaa right is very tough. We take for granted those nakhra-jhatka-matkas which weve seen our sisters perform at weddings. Indian girls have those adaas without being trained. But for a foreigner it is tough. Giselle couldve done with a bit more training. Even when Harleen became visible in the trailers she remained inaccessible to the public. Imtiaz says, Why a Brazilian girl to play an old-fashioned Punjabi girl? Well, I was auditioning girls from all over the country to play the Punjabi girl opposite the Sikh Saif. I couldnt find the right girl to play the 1965 ki gali mein rehne wali ladki, purane zamane ki. Then one day Giselle walked into Imtiazs office for another part. Giselle came to me to play Jo, Saifs Caucasian girlfriend in the second-half. She wasnt right for Jo. But my wife who was there suggested Giselle for Harleen. I turned and looked at Giselle and realised she is Brazils Harleen. She didnt know how to speak Hindi. But she had only two lines to speak, which we dubbed. Significantly Giselle understood the old-world values of her small-town character better than an urban Indian actress would have. Says Imtiaz, The small-town mentality in every part of the world is similar. 'Nasha Nasha' from Daddy Cool By zoomdekho Forthcoming laugh riot "Daddy Cool" is about a funeral gone wrong, but it doesn't make fun of the solemn ceremony, says Hyderabad-based director K. Murli Mohan Rao who marks his return to Bollywood with the film. "We have woven the story around a funeral in our comedy, but it doesn't mock the serious occasion. It is not meant to hurt people's sentiments at all. I'm sure once people see the film, they will not take it in a bad taste," Rao told IANS over phone from Mumbai. "The film is not just about the funeral...there are a series of underlying situations. It is a lighthearted family drama with a lot of laughter in it," he added. Starring Aarti Chhabria, Ashish Chowdhry, Tulip Joshi, Aftab Shivdasani, Javed Jaffrey and Prem Chopra, the film is releasing Aug 28. Rao, who has so far directed 15 Telugu movies and 10 Hindi films, has returned to Bollywood after seven years with "Daddy Cool". "I was busy with my personal life and some family problems. Also another reason to take the long break was that I didn't want to jump at any opportunity that came my way. I was waiting for the right subject to make a film," said Rao who started his career in 1983 with a Telugu film, "Sangharshana". Rao's last Hindi venture was "Kya Yahi Pyar Hai" that had Ameesha Patel and Aftab Shivdasani in the lead roles. He also made films like "Prem Qaidi" and "Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaaye", but says this is his first comedy. "I did not face any problems in directing 'Daddy Cool', even though this was my first comedy ever. It was like being on a picnic," said the director. "Comedy is not my forte but one has to change with time. Now cinemagoers are mainly youngsters and they like watching lighter films. They want laughter and no burden attached. They want something that will entertain them completely. That's why I ventured into this," he added. Pregnant Amrita Arora thrown out of the movie By zoomdekho The news of Amrita Arora's pregnancy doesn't seem to have gone well with UTV. The actress has been dropped out of Season's Greetings by the production house. The actress is apparently shattered with the news as this was the only film she was working on and says she wasn't even informed about the decision. A source close to Amrita informs a daily that UTV kept on delaying the shooting of the film, which was originally scheduled for January 2009. "Till October, no shoot happened," says the source. The actress reportedly discovered about her exclusion from the film only after bumping into director Vicky Chopra recently. She was told that she has been replaced in the movie because of her pregnancy. Amrita was shell-shocked and told the director that he should have at least informed her about their decision. The actress is now being replaced by some other actress. Amrita confirms the news to a daily. "Yes, I have been thrown out of the film because of my condition. I wouldn't like to say anything else." Film critics like Love Aaj Kal By zoomdekho A love story that opens with a breakup thats quite a twist in the treatment. Do not expect too much of novel turns in the tale though. Love Aaj Kal is a been-there-seen-that story of a couple, Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone) who realize true love for each other once they part ways and go their own paths. Just that this couple breaks up to start with and subsequently gets together for an imminent happy end. A parallel plot in a period setting has Veer (Saif, again) being smitten by a pristine Punjabi kudi in a bygone era. The different perspectives of love in the parallel narratives, beautifully builds a contrast in the tale. The innocence of love from the past era comes across as strikingly divergent to the practicality of romance in the present times. In a pensive line, Rishi Kapoor as the elder Sardar, makes smart sense when he says love made people serious about life in yesteryears while seriousness towards life makes people abandon love in current generation. The feel of the film is fresh, youthful and light-hearted throughout which is aptly complemented by informal and straight-out-of-life dialogues, peppy musical score and natural performances. Even the breakup between the couple is absolutely casual sans any hard feelings. Especially notable are the instant conversations post the breakup, where the couple liberated of relationship, opens up more warmly. The chemistry between the couple is equally relaxed as love is established with kiss-and-make-up briskness. But somewhere too much abruptness dilutes the conviction of the narrative. While one is habituated to the abrupt emergence of song-and-dance (the Twist track), what is not reasonable is Saifs sudden distracted demeanour and love-realization in the pre-climax. There are momentary failures in continuity with the screenplay constantly crossing geographical boundaries and covering different timeframes. Certainly the film stretches and drags in its latter reels. While the feel-good factor works in its favour, it also brings in the déjà vu effect from romance flicks ranging from DDLJ to Hum Tum . The lovers reunion after a yearlong hiatus is evocative of the climax of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna . The editing (Aarti Bajaj) and cinematography (N Natarajan Subramaniam) are impressive. But what steals the show is Pritams spirited composition and Bosco-Caesers grooving choreography in Twist and Aahun Aahun which is amazingly energetic and infectious. Saif Ali Khan shines with a refreshing natural performance in both his characters. He looks super-cool as Jai and makes for a decent enough Sardar, Veer. Hes esp. outstanding in the pre-marriage confrontation with Deepika. Deepika Padukone puts in an equally compelling act and shares superb chemistry with Saif. Rishi Kapoor is lively. The still-under-wraps second lead (Punjabi girl) is immaculately beautiful. The recipe of love stories hasnt changed much over the years. Its just reworked garnishing that has added to the appeal. Likewise Love Aaj Kal doesnt promise much newness in its plot but clicks largely for its casual-n-cheerful presentation. Kal ka wine in Aaj ka bottle!
