Ong 1.Eat a banana if you have heartburn. The Journal of Nutritional Biochemisty (February, 2001) attests to the anti-ulcer properties of the banana. Bananas act like a natural antacid to the stomach. In this article, they identified the secret component in the banana, the flavonoid leucocyanidin. Studies show that bananas can protect against aspirin-induced gastritis and can significantly increase the mucous membrane lining of the stomach. 2.Bananas are high in fiber. A single banana contains 16% of the dietary fiber, 15% of the vitamin C, 11% of the potassium and 20% of the vitamin B6 recommended each day. Sorry, apple-lovers but apples have zero amounts of Vitamin C. Bananas also have soluble fiber, which may help lower blood cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. 3.Bananas are good for the heart. Potassium is an essential mineral needed to regulate water balance, acidity level and blood pressure of the body. A lack of potassium may cause muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat. For patients taking a diuretic medicine, they should take 2 bananas a day to keep the potassium level up. Take note also that bananas have zero sodium (good for high blood pressure) and zero fat and cholesterol (good for those with high cholesterol). 4.Bananas may reduce strokes. Numerous studies have shown that low potassium levels can cause heart palpitations, which can then lead to a stroke. In the editorial of the prestigious Neurology Journal, the author suggests that a banana a day may keep a stroke away. Among the fruits and vegetables, bananas contain one of the highest amounts of potassium. 5.Bananas help counter stress and insomnia. Bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that is known to make you feel happy and improve your mood. If you feel sad, dont despair. Take a banana and be happy. 6.Diabetics may take bananas in moderation. Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep the blood sugar level up. The glycemic index rating for a ripe, yellow banana is 51 which is fairly good. This means that the carbohydrates in a banana have a medium to slow effect in raising your blood sugar levels. However, as bananas ripen, the starch in the fruit turns to sugar and may cause your blood sugar to rise more. The lesson is: its okay to eat a banana, but not the overripe one. 7.Bananas for fatigue and anemia. Bananas contain carbohydrates and thus boost our energy, as Mang Ruben will attest. Have you seen Roger Federer eat a banana between games? The high potassium content prevents cramps and gives ready energy with its easily digestible starch. Bananas are also a rich source of iron, thus it is helpful in patients with anemia. 8.Bananas may prevent leukemia. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology by Kwan et al. (Dec 2004, pp. 1098-107) shows an association between regular consumption of bananas and oranges in children from ages 0-2 and a reduction in childhood leukemia The result suggests that fruits or fruit juices containing vitamin C and potassium may reduce the risk of childhood leukemia, especially if consumed at a young age. 9.Bananas may prevent childhood asthma. A European study of 2,640 primary school children in South London concludes that eating bananas at least once a day reduces episodes of wheezing and asthma attacks in children (European Respiratory Journal, Feb. 14, 2007). Eating apples and other fruits were not as beneficial. Also, eating only one banana a month was not effective. Note to Moms: its time to teach our kids to eat one banana a day. 10.Its Filipino and its cheap! The best news about the lowly banana is that its cheap. That is why Mang Ruben can buy a bunch or two a day. And it comes in a great package. A banana can fit cleanly in your bag. Just cut it high up in the stem. When you feel hungry and stressed, reach for a banana. Jaya "Is It Over" By popsicle628 from the album "Cool Change" GMA Records Directed by Louie Ignacio Is it really over, Jaya? Over, now that you've managed to create one of your best work to date? Now that your rich, intense vocals sound better than before? Well, not quite. It's ironic really for the carrier single off Jaya's latest album to be titled "Is It Over?" since, in the first place, it doesn't really signal an end; in fact, it does the exact opposite in tremendous fashion. The last time listeners heard soul sister Jaya was back in 2005 with the thematic "Fall In Love Again." Two years later, she is back with a vengeance and all guns blazing. Her ninth album "Cool Change" signifies the many changes she has undergone in the past years. A new look, a new sound, a new label. These are some of the changes visible after giving the 55-minute long CD a spin. And what glorious period it was. From start to finish, Jaya delivers fitting sensuous vocals at precise moments all throughout. Although it is a remake album, "Cool Change" appears to be Jaya's strongest record yet, one that has stacks of variety and texture. It also stands as a testimonial of industry experience and wisdom in that she doesn't try too hard pulling off vintage soul; instead she delights in belting out these classic confections in her own sweet style. Choice cut and first single "Is It Over?" drips with dual emotions of the ends and beginnings of a relationship. Here, Jaya funnels her vocal abilities to a bare minimum, letting it flow fluidly with the lovely musical backdrop. The new minimalist approach is evident early on. With a rhyme-like arrangement and sunny production, title track "Cool Change" makes it clear that changes are present this time around. "Just Once" and "Through the Fire", classic songs remade over and over again, offer a distinctive Jaya touch. On the latter, controlled vocal aggression and gentle instrumentation keeps the song from being bland and overboard at the same time. The result of Jaya's newfound self-containment is as addictive as her old timeless hits. Meanwhile, "Points of View" features guest vocals from peer Regine Velasquez. This tandem, which is contrasting in terms of style, is probably one of the best. Jaya's full-bodied alto harmonies shine under layers of Regine's soaring vocals. "On The Radio" sees Jaya transforming herself to a disco/dance-pop diva in the image of Donna Summer. Another recognizable change comes in the tracks "Girlfriend" and "For the First Time" with their soothing, jazz-inspired vocals. She manages to restrain herself, understanding that a stable delivery will do rather than a powerful release. Clearly, Jaya is attracted to melodrama with a heartrending version of "Why Can't It Be," the essence of which is fixed yet again on mellow voices, and with Janno Gibbs lending his vocals they both make the neat arrangement notable. "Living Inside Myself" offers a comparable amount of sweet elements, which also relies heavily on delicate keys and backing vocals. After all that, the glorious ballad "Cody's Song" comes as a relief. Featuring Jaya's baby's giggle, this final cut is sung in a warm and kind voice that is as comforting as how this new album had managed to sound. All tracks present a much-improved Jaya and it only shows that she is at her best when she maintains control. Some might dismiss this as one of those remakes album done a million times before but the key factor in this album's success is its straightforwardness.
