Zaid Hamid:BrassTacks-Yeh Ghazi Episode18: Sultan Shahab ud Din Ghauri Part5
By khawajak

Sultan Shahabuddin Ghauri played a key role in establishing the Muslim rule in the subcontinent. He was the first Muslim ruler

to conquer Delhi and establish a Muslim rule in India.

He defeated Prithviraj Chauhan in the Second battle of Tarain in 1192 CE, Rajput kingdoms like Saraswati, Samana, Kohram and

Hansi were captured without any difficulty. Then Ghori proceeded to Ajmer. Nobody challenged him. After reaching Ajmer, he

spared the son of PrithviRaj, Kola, who in turn took the oath of loyalty to Ghauri.

Within a few years Muhammad Ghauri controlled northern Rajasthan and the northern part of the Ganges-Yamuna Doab. Muhammad

Ghauri returned east to Ghazni to deal with the threat to his western frontiers from the Turks and Mongols, but his armies,

mostly under Turkish generals, continued to advance through northern India, raiding as far east as Bengal.

Muhammad returned to Lahore after 1200 to deal with a revolt of the Gakhar tribe in the Punjab. He suppressed the revolt, but

was killed during a Gakhar raid on his camp on the Jhelum River in 1206.

Upon his death, Qutb-ud-din Aybak, Sultan Muhammad Ghauri's most capable general, who had started of by sacking Ayodhya in

1193 A.D., took control of Ghauri's Indian conquests and declared himself the first Sultan of Delhi thus establishing

Sultanate of Delhi in 1206 CE. Muhammad Ghauri is remembered as an empire builder and is justly called the founder of the

Muslim Empire in Indo-Pakistan.

Zaid Hamid:BrassTacks-Yeh Ghazi Episode11; Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi Part1
By khawajak

BrassTacks program Yeh Ghazi on Timeline of the Muslim History. In this episode Zaid Hamid discusses the campaigns of Sultan

Mahmud Ghaznavi in the subcontinent. It was Hindus who took the offensive & their Raja Jay Pal launched an assault on Ghazni

during the time of Mahmud's father Sebuktagin. He suffered a demoralizing defeat & lost fair proportion of his land. When

Sultan Mahmud came to power he again took the field to avenge his defeat. But this time the thrashing was even greater & so

much was he disheartened by this that he committed suicide.Sultan Maḥmud was the first to carry the banner of Islām into the

heart of India Sultan Mahmud was one of the greatest Iconoclasts in the History.

When approached to spare the idol of Thanesar, highly revered by the Hindus, in exchange of substantial "annual tribute and

fifty elephants and jewels to a considerable amount", Mahmud simply turned it down saying:
"The religion of the faithful inculcates the following tenet: 'That in proportion as the tenets of the Prophet are diffused,

and his followers exert themselves in the subversion of idolatry, so shall be their reward in heaven;' that therefore, it

behoved him, with the assistance of God, to root out the worship of idols from the face of India. How, then, should he spare

Thanesar?"

He repeated similar sentiments when, at Somnath, he was offered a huge compensation to spare the idol. Even his nobles

pointed to him that "he could not obtain so much treasure by breaking the idol, and the proferred money would be very

serviceable."

His reply was simple and straightforward. He preferred the glory of his religion above any booty. He said:
"I know this, but I desire that on the day of resurrection I should be summoned with the words 'Where is that Mahmud who

broke the greatest of heathen idols?' rather than by these: 'Where is that Mahmud who sold the greatest of the idols to the

infidels for gold?'"

He razed the temple to the ground and broke the idol into four pieces. Firishta writes "two pieces of the idol were to be

broken off and sent to Ghazni so that one might be thrown at the threshold of the public mosque and the other at the court

door of his own palace. These identical fragments are to this day (now 600 year ago) to be seen at Ghizany. Two more

fragments were reserved to be sent to Mecca and Medina."

Though a zealous champion of Islām, he never treated his Indian subjects harshly nor did he ever impose the Islāmic religion

on them. He maintained a large contingent of Hindu troops, commanded by their own countrymen, whom he employed with great

success against his religionists in Central Asia. Conversion to Islām was never a condition of service in the Sultans army.

Sultan Mahmud virtually obliterated the Fitna-e-Qaramitah who after being thumped by the Abbasids had got settled in Multan &

established their centre here.

May Allah SWT have mercy on him

Zaid Hamid:BrassTacks-Yeh Ghazi Episode11; Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi Part3
