Its soundtrack, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, features new versions of songs originally written and performed by The Beatles. The film draws primarily from two of their albums, the 1967 album of the same name and 1969's Abbey Road. The production is somewhat adapted from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road, a 1974 off-Broadway production directed by Tom O'Horgan. It tells the loosely-constructed story of a band as they wrangle with the music industry and battle evil forces bent on stealing their instruments and corrupting their home town of Heartland. The film is presented in a form similar to that of a rock opera with the Beatles' songs providing "dialogue" to carry the story, with only George Burns having spoken lines that act to clarify the plot and provide further narration. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighteenth album by the Bee Gees. It was released in July 1978 and sold 2 million copies worldwide. The soundtrack to the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, it consists of a number of Beatles covers. The film starred the Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Aerosmith, and Steve Martin. The soundtrack album was rejected by Bee Gees fans, Beatles fans and mainstream buyers. Whereas the latter objected to the awkward treatment of classic songs such as Martin's comedic take on "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", the former, while buying soundtracks featuring disco and pop hits in droves, had no interest in an Alice Cooper version of "Because" or hearing unknown actress Sandy Farina's competent vocal work on "Strawberry Fields Forever". Nonetheless, Earth Wind & Fire's version of "Got To Get You Into My Life" became a Top Ten single. Aerosmith's version of "Come Together" also reached the charts and later appeared on the Armageddon soundtrack. While the double-LP shipped enough copies to retailers to reach the top 5 on the US album charts, most of these were eventually returned without selling and the album was still a cut-out bin staple years later. "Here Comes the Sun" is a song by George Harrison from The Beatles' 1969 album Abbey Road. The song, one of Harrison's best-known Beatles contributions alongside "Something", originated from a songwriting collaboration between Harrison and close friend Eric Clapton called "Badge," recorded by Clapton's group Cream, and featuring an arpeggiated guitar riff that is similar to the one that forms the bridge of "Here Comes the Sun". 1969 was a difficult year for Harrison: he was arrested for marijuana possession, he had his tonsils removed, and he had temporarily quit the band. The song was written while Harrison was away from all of these troubles. Harrison stated in The Beatles Anthology: "Here Comes the Sun" was written at the time when Apple was getting like school, where we had to go and be businessmen: 'Sign this' and 'sign that'. Anyway, it seems as if winter in England goes on forever, by the time spring comes you really deserve it. So one day I decided I was going to sag off Apple and I went over to Eric Clapton's house. The relief of not having to go see all those dopey accountants was wonderful, and I walked around the garden with one of Eric's acoustic guitars and wrote "Here Comes The Sun". Harrison sang lead vocals and played acoustic guitar and Moog synthesizer. Paul McCartney sang backing vocals and played bass guitar. Ringo Starr played drums, with all three Beatles providing handclaps. John Lennon did not contribute to the song as he was recovering from a recent car crash (he was also absent from George Harrison's "Long, Long, Long"). Unnamed musicians played violas, cellos, double bass, piccolos, flutes, alto flutes, and clarinets. George Clinton & Parliament Funkin` For Fun By jes102 Glen Goins, (b 1954 - d 1978) on lead RNB/Gospel vocals was a guitarist and vocalist for Parliament Funkadelic in the 70's. He had distinctive, vocal prominence; during live shows/concerts & on 3 consecutive released albums which started with; 'The Mothership Connection' from (1975 -1977). Glen Goins was one of the first members to leave Parliament because of subsequent management problems to form his own group named 'Quazar'; with his younger brother Kevin Goins & also drummer Jerome 'Bigfoot' Bailey. Sadly in 1978 Glen Goins passed away of Hodgkins Disease, before Quazar`s first album release which he produced & arranged. Glen Gones & Jerome Bailey were both inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1997 alongside, George Clinton and various other Parliament Funkadelic members. Glen Goins is known for calling the Mothership to land/ depart during live concerts/shows & also to take lead vocals in our psychedelic & theatrical era; The 70's! This Finale to The Mothership Connection concert recorded in 1976 see's nearly 40-50 funksteers devour the stage, in order to close the show! I'll Be Somewhere Working For My Lord By hotfivejazzmakers February 8th 2008 marks 5 years since the death of Cliff "Kid" Bastien. To commemorate his memory and the legacy of his jazz and superb vocal style, here is another clip from that concert on December 2nd 2002, when he was on a tour of Scandinavia, as a guest of "New Orleans Delight" along with his old friend George Berry. This recording was made at Sorgenfri Kirke (church) which is about 15 km north of Copenhagen. We must thank Holger Bach for his fine camera work in recording this event for us all to see. It was a tremendous lift for Cliff to be re-united with his old friend and fellow-Brit' reedman George Berry. Cliff detested flying and there is little doubt that George Berry joining the tour was a deciding factor in persuading him to overcome his aversion and make the trip. Cliff and George had formed his first "Kid" Thomas style band together. It was called "The Camelia Band" and they started the tradition of Saturday jazz at Grossman's Tavern in Toronto back in May 1970. In fact, if you do a Youtube search on "Eh La Bas" you will see a precious cut of about 70 seconds of the Camelia band playing in Grossmans! The authentic old New Orleans style of "New Orleans Delight" was a natural for both guests. Full support is provided by Kjeld Brandt - clarinet; Bengt Hansson - trombone; Goran Magnusson - piano; Erling Lindhardt - banjo; Stefan Karfve - bass and Claus Lindhardt -drums. This spiritual was written by Maybelle Carter(born 1909) There is a fine audio recording of this concert on "Music Mecca CD 4069-2. Details are available at the band web site www.new-orleans-delight.dk Sad to say, George Berry also passed away, just a few months after his buddy Cliff. They are together again up there somewhere, knocking out that Kid Thomas styled jazz!
