The controller's last report, prior to the landing, stated that the winds were 330 degrees at 28 knots. That exceeded the MD-82's crosswind limit, for landing in reduced visibility on a wet runway. With that information, plus two wind shear reports, the approach should have been abandoned at that point. But, the captain decided to continue his approach to Runway 4R. During their rush to land as soon as possible, both pilots became overloaded with multiple necessary tasks. That led to errors and omissions, which proved to be the final links in the accident chain. They failed to arm the automatic ground spoiler system (panels on top of the wings). The smooth airflow over the top of the wings is disrupted when the spoilers deploy automatically, as the wheels touch the runway. That kills the lifting ability of the wings, which makes the wheel brakes effective. The pilots also failed to arm the auto braking system. Both automatic deployment of the ground spoilers and automatic engagement of the brakes, are essential to ensure the plane's ability to stop within the confines of a wet runway, that is being subjected to strong and gusting winds. After landing, the first officer stated, "We're down. We're sliding." Neither pilot observed that the spoilers did not deploy, so there was no attempt to activate them manually. The result was almost no braking at all, because the wings were still "flying." Directional control was lost when the captain applied too much reverse thrust, in contradiction to the limits stated in the flight manual. The aircraft skidded off the far end of the runway at high speed and finally came to a stop on the banks of the Arkansas River. Such structures are usually frangible - i.e. designed to shear off on impact - but because the approach lights were located on the unstable river bank, they were firmly anchored and the impact destroyed the aircraft. It broke into three pieces and ignited. Simulated in FSX. So to save everyone asking the same questions over and over here are some of the most popular questions answered. Some of the answers have come from feedback on this thread so thanks to everyone for helping out. 1. How do i get a push back with a turn? ---- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNCPaQ... 2. How do i move the jetway to the door? ---- Press CTRL+J 3. The Jetway isn't moving to the door, why? ---- Make sure your front wheel is parked somewhere between the front two sets of yellow markers. 4. Grrr..The Jetway STILL isn't moving to the door!! ---- Watch the other aircraft(traffic) parked at the gates. Do you see their jetways moving? Tip: Goto options and put traffic to at least 50%. Start at any airport at a gate. Switch to overhead view of the airport. Put the sim rate to x4. Now watch to see if any jetways move for the airport traffic. If you see the jetway moving for the aircraft in Gate 20, reload at gate 20 and try it. 5. My jetways are missing, why? ---- Scenery and Autogen need to be set to at least 'Dense'. Also, You need to enable 'advanced animations' tick box in FSX settings to see the jetways. If you don't have that option then you need to upgrade your graphics card. 6. Are there movable Jetways in 2004 (fs9)? ---- No. There are a few airport add-ons that will add them but i've never tried them. 7. How do i open the cargo and baggage doors? ---- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anV6Pq... 8. Where do you get all those planes like BA and Virgin? ---- Those are AI traffic add-on and replace FSX default traffic. There are several of these you can buy or download for free. I am using MyTrafficX which cost around £15 by direct download. http://secure.simmarket.com/product_i... You can install plenty of free AI from http://www.avsim.com. Just sign up and browse their file library. The KLM comes from FSXAdventures KLM Misson Pack. It's payware http://secure.simmarket.com/product_i... 9. How do you start at the gate/terminal and not on the runway? ---- When you choose your airport you are given the option to select a gate, ramp, parking or active runway. By default it's set to active runway. Just change that from the dropdown menu when you are selecting your airport. 10. How do you get those buttons at the top for the checklists. ---- Those buttons are from add-on called FS2Crew. It's basically an invisble co pilot. Those buttons activate him to carry out the commands for starting the 747 from cold, and for me to activate the checklists etc. The version i am using is the Default FSX 747 Edition http://www.fs2crew.com Thanks for all the comments and votes. This was a real flight on May 6, 2007. The paint was house colors and this is Myanmar colors, but I couldn't find the house colors so I picked the closest thing to it. It took me all night to reach India because of the time difference. I reached cruising altitude at 3:01 and began my descent at 5:41. And yes, I know the cockpit is of a 747... but like I say in my comments, "Might as well use a cockpit designed by the makers of the game... not Cindy Lu Hu from down the street," lol. This was a real flight on May 6, 2007. The paint was house colors and this is Myanmar colors, but I couldn't find the house colors so I picked the closest thing to it. It took me all night to reach India because of the time difference. I reached cruising altitude at 3:01 and began my descent at 5:41. And yes, I know the cockpit is of a 747... but like I say in my comments, "Might as well use a cockpit designed by the makers of the game... not Cindy Lu Hu from down the street," lol. The music is "Radioactivity" by Kraftwerk. Manual landing. Enjoy! If so, the jet's two pilots would have been pressed to instantly carry out emergency procedures, according to aviation safety experts and MD-80 pilots. "A failure to act promptly or a failure to act correctly by a flight crew during that critical phase of flight can be very, very problematic," says Mark Goodrich, a pilot and safety consultant. Few details have emerged to indicate what might have caused the jet loaded with holiday travelers to break into pieces just off Madrid-Barajas Airport, sparing only 19 of the 172 people aboard. Nothing has been officially ruled out, from mechanical failure to terrorism, although Spanish media has reported that video shows the engine did not explode at takeoff.
