Dallas Creates a Public School for Boys This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Girls and boys usually attend classes together in American public schools. But there are some single-sex programs, like a girls public school in Dallas, Texas. It opened in two thousand four. The students have done well enough that the school system is now opening a school for boys.Nakia Douglas is principal of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. He says he was the kind of student that the school is seeking. "I was born and raised in south Dallas by a single parent. I was a neighborhood child. I was that child that -- I would work if I knew the teacher believed in me. But, at the same time, I had a hunger and desire for more."Educational researchers say boys learn in different ways and mature more slowly than girls, and are more likely to leave school. Being in class with the opposite sex can also take attention away from learning. Kendall Keeter thinks the boys school will be good for his son the way the girls school was for his daughter. "Our thought was to also give our son an opportunity that would best prepare him for college in the same manner she was prepared, and I can't imagine any other option that would have prepared her better."Another parent, Madeline Hayes, also likes the idea of a publicly funded school for boys. "This is something, as cheesy as it sounds, that I've always dreamed about, that there will be a boys school that doesn't charge twenty-five thousand dollars a year, but would give the same academics, the same level of interaction and leadership."The school is for grades six through nine. It will offer college preparatory classes and leadership courses even on weekends. Principal Douglas says the boys will be urged to support one another. "All of our young men we call 'brother.' So it may be Brother Malyk Davis or Brother Samuel Keeter. The young men understand they are their brother's keeper. And so the young men are really learning to be responsible not only for themselves, but also for their brothers here at the campus."Most students who want to be accepted into the Obama Academy in Dallas will need to have good grades and pass a number of tests. But ten to fifteen percent will not have to meet all of the entrance requirements. Principal Nakia Douglas says they will have to show they have a strong character and a desire to learn. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - Bandit Farming for Trade Objects Gamertag: Zwoosh Want to be in a Brotherhood multiplayer video? Add my newly created gamertag on Xbox Live. Gamertag: Zwoosh All my videos will be STORY spoiler free AND HD! Bandits drop a lot of rare quest items. A lot. Two farming runs with no editing - one take. Here's my Tradable Item farming route. Not sure if its been discovered already, but I'm documenting it anyway. Wait until nightfall! Travel to Palazzo Laterano (you might be able to travel closer - but I'm superstitious) I walk to the location near the bottom of the map because of superstition mainly :P Walk along the path until you hit a crossroad with a small hill with trees on it. Bandits attack from around the hill. If they don't attack straight away, walk a couple of times around it. Kill them, loot them, repeat! Works every time (at night) for me. Sometimes I have to go to dash and restart though, so almost every time. :) Items I commonly get: Silk Vlad the Impaler Coins Ambergris Elephant Ivory Indian Diamonds Sapphire Cardinal's Purple Dye Piper Nigrum Papaver Silvaticum And Shrunken Head (apparently. if you do my route, let me know if you get a Shrunken head!) Story: Right, so I've been trying my bloody hardest to get do my last shop quest (Exotica), all I'm missing is a 'Shrunken Head'. After going to every treasure chest in Rome I'm still missing one, so I tried something else. I heard rumours that Bandits that "randomly" attack you have a small percentage of dropping Shrunken Heads, so after wandering around aimlessly I discovered bandit attacks aren't random and I found a way to make them spawn almost every time. Here's my farming route which has been giving me incredible results. Also, mail carriers frequently run along the road. I was able to get Aconite from one of them. Robotic Farmer: Prospero This is just a short video of the hexapod robot, Prospero, planting. Prospero is an autonomous robotic farmer that would be used as part of a group or swarm of identical robots. Imagine a hundred of these robots walking across a field, planting and working together like a colony of ants or bees. For more a longer video that goes more in depth, search for "vanmunch36" and look for the other Prospero videos. Prospero is the working prototype of an Autonomous Micro Planter (AMP) that uses a combination of swarm and game theory and is the first of four steps. It is meant to be deployed as a group or "swarm". The other three steps involve autonomous robots that tend the crops, harvest them, and finally one robot that can plant, tend, and harvest--autonomously transitioning from one phase to another. Prospero is controlled with a Parallax Propeller chip mounted on a Schmart Board. Its body is designed by Lynxmotion and the orginal programming allows it to walk autonomously in any direction while avoiding objects with its duel ultrasonic Ping))) without turning it's body. An underbody sensor array allows the robot to know if a seed has been planted in the area at the optimal spacing and depth. Prospero can then dig a hole, plant a seed in the hole, cover the seed with soil, and apply any pre-emergence fertilizers and/or herbicides along with the marking agent. Prospero can then talk to other robots in the immediate proximity that it needs help planting in that area or that this area has been planted and to move on via IR (currently represented with a green and red LED ). The more seeds it plants, the more the "green" LED lights up, the more it draws other robots nearby (+2). The more it detects planted seeds, the more it repulses other robots with the "red" LED (-1) Why small, autonomous robots? Robotics in Agriculture Despite its quaint reputation, agriculture has always been an early adapter of technology. This is evident from the beginning of mechanization with the cotton gin, McCormick's Reaper, tractors, hybrid seed, to genetically engineered plants that protect themselves and grow in arid environments. Yields have grown quickly, but demand from developing countries and population growth are growing faster We know that we need to continue to find ways to increase the productivity of land on a per unit basis. Agriculture has started to add computerization and automation to the current machinery with things like GPS based precision farming systems that can autonomously drive tractors, monitor yield, and apply fertilizer. However, these aftermarket add-ons are built around the single most expensive and awkward part of the equipment. The person controlling the tractor. Today's agricultural equipment has been designed around a person sitting in a chair. It cost a lot to employ a single person so the equipment grew larger in order to maximize the productivity of that one person. However, this method has its drawbacks. Farming decisions have to be made at the field level. Nature is chaotic and dynamic. Soil nutrients and moisture change from foot to foot. Having equipment that allows a single person to plant a thousand acres in a day comes at the cost of productivity per acre as a result of treating all those acres as the same. A swarm of small robots like Prospero would have the ability to farm inch by inch, examining the soil before planting each seed and choosing the best variety for that spot. This would maximizing the productivity of each acre, allow less land to be converted to farm land, feed more people, and provide a higher standard of living for those people because they would spend less of their money on food. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Shortage of Nurses Is Worldwide, but Worst in Poorer Nations This is the VOA Special English Development Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish The health care industry needs more nurses. All areas of the world face a nursing shortage. But the shortage is most severe in developing countries. Many of their nurses leave. They move to more developed nations for better pay, better working conditions and better chances for career development.A World Bank report earlier this year called attention to the problem. For example, nearly two thousand nurses left the Caribbean between two thousand two and two thousand six. Caribbean nations currently have about one nurse for every one thousand people. The ratio of nurses to population is about ten times higher in the United States and countries in the European Union. Currently, more than twenty-one thousand nurses who trained in the Caribbean are working in the United States, Canada and Britain.Gaetan Lafortune is with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris. He says the nursing shortage also affects industrialized countries. Mr. Lafortune says a large number of nurses are expected to retire within the next ten years. At the same time, the health care needs of aging populations are expected to grow, intensifying the shortage of nurses. He says some researchers in the United States have projected that there may be a shortage of close to a million nurses by two thousand twenty. The United States is one of thirty-one countries in the O.E.C.D. Gaetan Lafortune says in recent years many of the countries increased their efforts to hire foreign nurses. But he says this has raised concern that O.E.C.D. countries were mainly exporting their shortage problem to countries that may have an even greater need for these nurses. In May, the World Health Assembly approved a global code of practice on the international recruitment of health workers. The assembly is made up of countries in the World Health Organization. The code advises against actively recruiting health workers from developing countries that face severe shortages. The world also faces a shortage of nursing trainers. As a result, nursing schools are forced to turn away qualified students. And that's the VOA Special English Development Report. You can find transcripts, MP3s and podcasts of our reports at voaspecialenglish.com. What are your thoughts about the nursing shortage and what should be done about it? Microsavings Could Mean Big Gains for the World's Poor This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish When it comes to savings, no amount is too small. Microsaving is a growing part of the international movement of microfinance. The aim is to bring financial services to poor people. Modern microfinance started with Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh. In the nineteen seventies, he started small loan programs that would become the Grameen Bank. Currently, microcredit providers are in over one hundred countries. Now, microfinance institutions are starting to offer other services, including savings plans. Recently, the non-profit group Small Enterprise Education and Promotion held a conference in Washington. SEEP works with over one hundred twenty groups around the world in efforts to cut poverty. It does this by supporting small businesses. The goal is help microfinance industry experts share ideas. One idea is called Financial Access at Birth, or FAB. It is designed to start each person with a financial citizenship at birth through a savings account connected to a bank deposit. Rosita Najmi is FAB's program director. She says FAB starts with financial inclusion, but creates other possibilities for inclusion across other sectors of health or education. Mobile or wireless technology will be important to many microfinance services. One meeting at the SEEP conference examined a mobile phone application for saving money. Debbie Dean of the Grameen Foundation says these efforts can also be extended to other financial services. They could include a combination of savings programs and money transfer programs. She says this could provide the most flexibility and convenience for savers. But offering savings, payments and other services requires more training and controls. Rashid Bajwa leads Pakistan's largest microfinance organization. He says more training is needed. And, he says, microfinance institutions will need specialized people when they start offering savings programs. Small savings deposits add up. And interest over time makes them grow. This can have a surprising effect for savers and societies. Rashid Bajwa puts it this way. He says the amount of money that poor people have is imaginable. For VOA Special English, I'm Carolyn Presutti. Broken Instruments Are Music to the Ears of These School Repairmen From http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish LARRY JERNIGAN: "This is a leak light. So if you see light, then that means air is getting through. That means the lower notes won't play and it's a chance that it will diminish the child's playing experience, which we don't want." Larry Jernigan wants children to have a joyful experience with music. LARRY JERNIGAN: "I think that works." Charles West feels the same way. CHARLES WEST: "Actually love my job. Sometimes it seems not, you know, to be work. But it is work." LARRY JERNIGAN: "I like the fact that I work around music all day, that my job involves music, it involves the support of music, and it involves the education of music." Charles West and Larry Jernigan have worked together for almost 20 years. They fix musical instruments for the Washington, D.C., public schools. Last year, they repaired more than 600 instruments. CHARLES WEST: "There are two of us here. We do brass, string, woodwind, percussion, piano and electric keyboard. And if you take it outside, you are talking six, seven different individuals to fix what I just stated." The two men say they have yet to meet an instrument they could not fix. CHARLES WEST: "There are instances when we run across an instrument that is just beyond economical repair. So we just strip the parts from that and use those parts to give life to other instruments." Both men are musicians and music lovers. So learning to do repairs was easy. CHARLES WEST: "I have been a musician all of my life. I am almost 50 now and I have been playing instruments since I was six years old. I played in an orchestra here in the city. I majored in music in college. And I played in an army band." LARRY JERNIGAN: "I was formerly trained in the piano and guitar. The alto sax, the clarinet, and the flute, I picked up while working here." In addition to fixing instruments, the men also go to schools to show teachers and students how to make minor repairs. West believes that children who start early and stay involved with music do well in other areas of their lives. CHARLES WEST: "I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works. They learn teamwork. They learn solo work. They learn camaraderie, they learn patience, and they learn respect." But he has concerns about music in the electronic age. CHARLES WEST: "We are not telling you to throw the PlayStation or the Xboxes in the trash. But this electronic age and this instant age has taken away from the sit down, the patience. There is no patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence, it takes time." Jernigan says he and West are lucky because they can enjoy music on the job. And they say they really enjoy the performances of D.C. students. LARRY JERNIGAN: "When I get to go see a concert or go see one of the bands perform, or the children playing, or the choir singing, that is probably the one that gets me the most because we had a big part into making that a success." How to feed the world in 2050: actions in a changing climate World Scientists Urge Key Actions for Achieving Food Security in a Changing Climate http://ccafs.cgiar.org/commission/reports/ To achieve food security in a changing climate, the global community must operate within three limits: the quantity of food that can be produced under a given climate; the quantity needed by a growing and changing population; and the effect of food production on the climate. At present the planet operates outside that safe space, as witnessed by the enormous number of people who are undernourished. If current trends in population growth, diets, crop yields and climate change continue, the world will still be outside this 'safe operating space' in 2050. Humanity must urgently work to enlarge the safe space and also move the planet into the safe space. The Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change has a produced a set of concrete policy actions to transform the food system.
