Russia The Su T-50 Sukhoi PAK FA or PAK-FA is a fifth generation fighter which is being developed by Russia and India. PAK FA stands for Perspektivnyi Aviatsionnyi Kompleks Frontovoi Aviatsyi (Перспективный авиационный комплекс фронтовой авиации in Russian) which roughly means Prospective (promising) Frontline Aviation System. It is being developed by a consortium of companies spearheaded by Sukhoi OKB, which refers internally to the project as the T-50. The PAK FA is intended to replace the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker in the Russian Air Force; it is scheduled to have its first flight in 2009[2] and enter service with the Russian and Indian Air Forces subsequently. The PAK FA was designed to compete with the USAF X-23 Aurora 6th gen, Russian air force 4.5th gen Su-47, Su-35, Su-30, Su-37, 5th gen USAF F-22, Raptor, and the F-35 Lightning II, the world's first fifth generation fighter jets. VS America Aurora (also credited as the SR-91 Aurora) is the popular name for a hypothesised United States reconnaissance aircraft, believed by conspiracy theorists to be capable of hypersonic flight (speeds of over Mach 5). According to the hypothesis, the Aurora was developed in the 1980s or 1990s as a replacement for the aging and expensive SR-71 Blackbird. A British Ministry of Defence report, released under the Freedom of Information Act, from May 2006 refers to USAF priority plans to produce a Mach 4-6 highly supersonic vehicle. In September 2007, DARPA and the USAF signed a memo of understanding to build a Mach-6 unmanned aircraft called "Blackswift" under the Force Application and Launch from Continental United States (Falcon program, but that does not explain the earlier reports. It is believed by some that the Aurora project was canceled due to a shift from spyplanes to high-tech unmanned aerial vehicles and reconnaissance satellites which can do a similar job as a spyplane, but with less risk of casualties or loss of highly expensive, sensitive equipment. A scramjet superweapon (supersonic combustion ramjet) is a variation of a ramjet distinguished by supersonic combustion. At higher speeds, it is necessary to combust supersonically to maximize the efficiency of the combustion process. Projections for the top speed of a scramjet engine (without additional oxidiser input) vary between Mach 12 and Mach 24 (orbital velocity). First working scramjet "GLL Holod" in world flies on 28 November 1991 reaching speed mach 5.8. However, the collapse of Soviet Union stopped the funding of the project. After NASA's NASP program was cut, American scientists began to look at adopting available Russian technology as a less expensive alternative to developing hypersonic flight. On November 17, 1992, Russian scientists with some additional French support successfully launched a scramjet engine "Holod" in Kazakhstan6. From 1994 to 1998 NASA worked with the Russian Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) to test a dual-mode scramjet engine and transfer technology and experience to the West. Four tests took place, reaching Mach numbers of 5.5, 5.35, 5.8, and 6.5. The final test took place aboard a modified SA-5 surface to air missile launched from the Sary Shagan test range in the Republic of Kazakhstan on 12 February 1998. According to CIAM telemetry data, first ignition of the scramjet was unsuccessful, but after 10 seconds the engine was started and the experimental system flew 77s with good performance, up until the planned SA-5 missile self-destruction (according to NASA, no net thrust was achieved). Some sources in the Russian military have said that a hypersonic (10-15M) maneuverable ICBM warhead was tested. The new "GLL Igla" system is expected to fly in 2009. F-22 Supermanouverability By malfita Montage of clips of the F-22 airshow demo including cobras, backflips, super-high-alpha flight, the Raptor hovering with its nose pointed straight up, some super-fast pitch-ups, and some "vapor" (sonic shock condensation cones and wingtip vortex contrails) at the very end. Sweet, sweet stuff. As we know, the F-22 is pretty much invisible in the battlefield (in simulated wargames, F-22 pilots always kill everyone else before being detected), has the fastest cruise speed of any airplane currently flying (MACH 1.5-1.75 depending on whom you ask), is powerful enough to break the sound barrier while flying straight up in a vertical climb while fully loaded, and is extremely advanced in how it manages, shares, and integrates information and presents it to the pilot. This weekend, the USAF has allowed one more thing about the F-22 to be shown to the public: its maneuvering capabilities. This video is a montage of clips from the F-22's first full tactical airshow demo (performed in Langley this weekend by Major Paul Moga) plus a few other F-22 clips from YouTube.
