How to Make a Lava Lamp the Easy Way By ScienceBob http://www.sciencebob.com has detailed instructions for making this easy lava lamp. Chances are you have almost everything that you need at home, so try it out and let us know how it goes. We used fizzing antacid tablets that go by the brand name alka-seltzer here in the US. I'm not sure what they may be called in other countries. Have fun! Walter Lewin Makes a Battery out of Cans and Water By FreeScienceLectures http://www.FreeScienceLectures.com The best physics lecturer Walter Lewin makes another wonderful physics demonstration after having read a lecture on batteries. The battery he creates has a huge potential difference - 10 to 20 kV! You'll never believe what it's made of! It's made of two cans with bottom and top open and two other cans. And then water is let to drip through the two open ones. After a short period a spark comes up, then another one, then another one. Do you know how it works? If not, see the free electricity and magnetism video course by Walter Lewin at MIT's OCW! --- It's Never too Late to Study: http://www.FreeScienceLectures.com --- Notice: This video is copyright by its respectful owners. Evolution IS a Blind Watchmaker By cdk007 READ THIS In this video I deconstruct the broken watch straw man argument used by creationist / ID supporters to attack evolution. I had to pack a ton of information into this video so you WILL need to pause it periodically. The basic premise of the argument is that a bunch of parts will never randomly assemble into the correct arrangement to form a properly functioning complex. Once again, creationists / ID supporters miss the basic concept of evolution entirely. No biologists believes, nor is there any evidence that complex systems form spontaneously in one fell swoop. That would be creation. Systems evolve through many intermediates, one step at a time, slowly building up the complexity. Here I deconstruct their straw man argument. Basically, I simulate clocks as living organisms. Selective pressure is focused on their ability to accurately tell time. NO goal is imposed on the design (you can tell this because every simulation ends with a differently constructed clock). And it works. Clocks evolve through a series of transitional forms: Pendulum, Proto-clock, 1-handed Clock, 2-handed Clock, 3-handed Clock, and 4-handed Clock. Gradually the complexity is built up. These labels I have assigned to the transitional forms have nothing to do with the simulation itself. They are names I assigned so that we could analyze what the population was doing. The clocks are just clocks, living in their world, trying to tell time as accurately as possible. One thing I wanted to address but didn't have time in the video is how rapid the transitional period can be. In some simulations the population goes from pendulums to 3-handed Clocks in a hundred or so generations. And the transitions between the transitional forms are even more rapid, happening in about ten generations. Chances are none or a very limited representation of that transition will be preserved in the fossil record. One thing I should add. The program does not draw the clocks. It maintains, mates, and simulates them, but the drawing must be done manually from the genome matrix. The program is written in MatLab. The hand rotations that begin with 86 are 86,000 not 86.000. When YouTube compressed the video it becam hard to tell a comma from a period. Supernnova simulation experiment. By m3141592 (Music is Wandering Star, Portishead.) Experiment to simulate conditions in an exploding star slowed down millions of times. The world's most powerful laser (covering the area of an American football field) is focused onto a sample of calcium, sulfur, carbon and iron the size of a pinhead. These materials are thought to be the same as a star's nucleus. At the instant of ignition the laser runs at a power output (wattage) twenty times larger than the electrical consumption of the USA. Shock wave tears the atoms apart, and the superheated gas plasma explodes outwards coalescing into fractal tendrils reminiscent of an astronomical photo of a nebula. Sculpting in Solid Mercury, with Liquid Nitrogen (Popsci.com + BB Video) By boingboingvideo READ HOW IT'S DONE HERE! ( http://www.popsci.com/mercuryfish ) Boing Boing Video teams up with PopSci and Theo Gray ( MAD SCIENCE author) for an eerily beautiful science experiment -- how to cast solid, if fleeting, shapes from normally liquid mercury -- just keep it at 320 degrees below zero, with liquid nitrogen. Snip from Theo's experiment, documented in this video: "What you consider solid, liquid or gas depends entirely on where you live. For example, men from cold, cold Mars might build their houses out of ice. Women from Venus, where the average temperature is about 870°F, could bathe in liquid zinc. We think mercury is a liquid metal, but its all relative. At one temperature, the mercury atoms arrange themselves into a solid crystal; at another, they flow freely around each other as a liquid. Children from Pluto (like mine, for example) could happily cast their toy soldiers out of mercury, because on that frigid planet it is a solid, malleable metal a lot like tin. Here on temperate Earth, you need a stove to cast tin, but a tank of liquid nitrogen to make mercury figurines..." http://www.popsci.com/mercuryfish RELATED BOING BOING BLOG POST: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/06/04/... Psychiatry is fake science. The Thud Experiment proof. By BritishFlagBearer Transcript of an excerpt from BBC2 "The Trap", broadcast 11th March 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trap... (Laing speaking to someone - Note Laing's Scottish accent!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._D._Laing Commentator - "Laing was now a celebrity in America and was one of the leaders of what was called the 'Anti-psychiatry movement'. Psychiatry, Laing said, was a fake science used as a system of political control to shore up a violent collapsing society. Its categories of madness and sanity had no reality. Madness was simply a convenient label used to lock away those who wanted to break free." "Hundreds of young psychiatrists came to Laing's talks and one of them was inspired and decided to find a way of testing whether what Laing said was true or not. Could psychiatrists in America distinguish between madness and sanity?" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosenhan... "He was called David Rosenhan and he devised a dramatic experiment. He assembled 8 people, including himself, none of whom had ever had any psychiatric problems. Each person was sent across the country to a specific mental hospital. At an agreed time, they all presented themselves at their hospital and told the psychiatrist on duty they were hearing a voice in their head that said the word "Thud". That was the only lie they should tell otherwise they were to behave and respond completely normally." Question - "and then what happened?" David Rosenhan - "They were all diagnosed as insane and admitted to the hospital." Question - "All of them?" David Rosenhan - "All of them." Question - "And were any of them insane?" David Rosenhan - "No. There was nobody who could have judged these people as insane. ... but I told friends, I told my family, I get out when I get out; that's all. Be there for a couple of days and then I get out. Nobody knew I would be there for 2 months!" Commentator - "Once admitted, all 8 fake patients acted completely normally yet the hospitals refused to release them and diagnosed 7 as suffering from schizophrenia and one from bipolar disorder. They were all given powerful psychotropic drugs. They found there was nothing they could do to convince the doctors they were sane and it quickly became clear that the only way out would be to agree that they were insane and then pretend to be getting better. David Rosenhan - "The only way out was to point out that they're correct. They said I was insane, I am insane, but I am getting better. That was an affirmation of their view of me." Commentator - "When Rosenhan finally got out and reported the experiment, there was an uproar. He was accused of trickery and deceit and one major hospital challenged him to send some more fakes to him, guaranteeing that they would spot them this time. Rosenhan agreed and after a month, the hospital proudly announced that they had discovered 41 fakes. Rosenhan then revealed that he had sent no-one to the hospital. The effect of The Thud Experiment was a disaster for American psychiatry. It destroyed the idea that they were a privileged elite with specialist knowledge. But those in charge realised that psychiatry could not just give up. Another way had to be found of understanding and managing people's inner feelings in modern society." ---------------- Peter Dow (BritishFlagBearer) writes - See this page this page on my Scottish National Standard Bearer website - "Arrogant and tyrannical judges - Beware of perverted judges and psychiatrists. Some judges cannot stand anyone who represents themselves and who dares to say that the judge has got it wrong or is incompetent." http://scot.bravehost.com/omp.htm?h=j... Tribute To Mike Portnoy - The Monster Of Drums By MajestyOfDT Michael Stephen Portnoy (born April 20, 1967) American drummer primarily known as the drummer and backing vocalist for the progressive metal band Dream Theater. Known for his drumming prowess, Portnoy has won 23 awards from the Modern Drummer magazine. He has co-produced the last five Dream Theater albums with John Petrucci, starting from Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. From A Change of Seasons onwards, Portnoy has been writing a substantial amount of Dream Theater's lyrics, filling the void left by Kevin Moore, who left the band after the release of Awake. He is the second youngest person (after Neil Peart) to be inducted into the Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame (at 37 years of age). Mike Portnoy was born and raised in Long Beach, New York, on Long Island. According to a post made by Jordan Rudess on his forum, Mike is Jewish but does not practice Judaism as a religion. His father worked as a DJ at a local radio station, helping Portnoy gain an appreciation for music at an early age through bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Yes and The Beatles. Although Portnoy taught himself how to play the drums, he did take music theory classes in high school. During that period he began playing in local bands Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, the last two of which released an album. He left Inner Sanctum after being awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. There he met John Petrucci and John Myung with whom he formed the band (originally called Majesty) that would become Dream Theater. Simple generator By wbeaty http://amasci.com/coilgen/ Build this ultra-simple AC electric generator from magnets, wire, and cardboard. (And a big nail!) Light a small lightbulb, or flash a red LED. This demonstrates how generators work. Now if you want a more useful device, use a small DC motor as a generator, since it has much better magnetics design. All motors are generators. Figure out how to spin a motor's shaft, and you can make a small powerful generator. Or... figure out how to convert the cardboard generator into a motor!
