The one-hour bloodless battle, known as the Tomatina, left the town awash in a sea of tomato pulp. The town council brought in some 100 tonnes of ripe tomatoes on trucks for the estimated 40,000 tourists who descended on the town of just 9,000 inhabitants for the annual festival, which has taken place for more than 60 years. Many of the participants were shirtless while others wore old clothes, hard hats or goggles. Afterwards, workers hosed down the walls and streets to remove the tomato pulp. Spanish media said the tomatoes cost the town council around 28,000 euros (35,000 dollars), about one third of the overall budget of 70,000 euros for the festival, most of which goes to pay for security, cleaning services, mobile toilets and civil protection. More than 100 police and 120 civil protection volunteers were on hand in case of incidents. The "Tomatina" is held each year in Bunol, located in a fertile region some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of the coastal city of Valencia, Spain's third-largest city, on the last Wednesday in August. The origins of the event are unclear although it is thought to have its roots in a food fight between childhood friends in the mid-1940s in the city. La Marcha Real ha sido el himno de España ininterrumpidamente desde el siglo XVIII, con la excepción de la II República (19311939), cuyo régimen adoptó el Himno de Riego. El general Francisco Franco restableció su oficialidad durante la guerra civil, en un Decreto del 27 de febrero de 1937, ratificado en el BOE una vez finalizada la contienda, el 17 de julio de 1942. Los posteriores cambios políticos no modificaron el himno nacional ni su estatuto legal. La regulación más precisa se hizo en el Real Decreto 1560/1997, del 10 de octubre de 1997, año de la adquisición plena de los derechos de autor de la armonización realizada por Bartolomé Pérez Casas, revisada por Francisco Grau, coronel director de la Banda de música de la Guardia Real, quien cedió gratuitamente sus derechos. Aunque Carlos III la declaró Marcha de Honor el 3 de septiembre de 1770, fue la costumbre popular lo que lo convirtió de facto en himno nacional, con anterioridad a que lo fuese declarado legalmente. La denominación de «Marcha Real» fue una expresión acuñada popularmente, debido a que se solía interpretar en los actos públicos a los que asistía el rey o la reina. CONJETURAS CON SU ORIGEN En los años 1980, otro musicólogo español, con la ayuda de un investigador español residente en Italia, descubrió en un archivo de Venecia la que parece la fuente original de la obra supuestamente enviada a España por el Rey de Prusia. Se trata de una «llamada» y es probable que date del siglo XVI. En la clasificación figuraba como «spagnola». Su sencilla morfología musical hace pensar que se interpretaba con flautas o pífanos, y la mayor parte de sus notas coinciden con las de la Marcha Real o Granadera. El hallazgo se publicó en el diario ABC de Madrid. Desde su descubrimiento se ha interpretado en varias ocasiones. Por otro lado, algunos historiadores subrayan las similitudes entre la Marcha y algunos aires militares de la época del emperador Carlos V. Otras fuentes apuntan a que el origen del himno oficial podría estar en la tušiya u obertura instrumental del movimiento Dary de la Nuba al-Istihlál del filósofo y músico árabe saraqustí Ibn Bayyah (Avempace) de finales del siglo XI o principios del XII. Tras descubrir casualmente el parecido entre una composición del sabio andalusí, interpretada por Omar Metiou y Eduardo Paniagua, y el himno español, el músico andaluz Chapi Pineda confirmó las semejanzas. LETRA DEL HIMNO La Marcha Real, al igual que el Inno Nazionale della Repubblica de San Marino y el Intermeco de Bosnia-Herzegovina, no posee letra oficial. Sin embargo, se han escrito varias letras para usarlas oficiosamente junto a la melodía, a menudo con gran aceptación. Los más antiguos versos se remontan al año 1843.
