Shaping the Way We Teach English: Module 05, Learner Feedback By UOregon One important distinction to make when giving learner feedback is that of formative vs. summative evaluation. Formative evaluation is a way of giving students feedback along the way. It is the answer to the questions, "How am I doing so far?" and "How can I improve?" Summative evaluation includes those kinds of evaluation that summarize a studentâs overall performance. For example, the final grade for a course. In this module, we'll look at some: * General "Dos and Don'ts" for formative learner feedback. * And, some specific techniques for giving feedback on work that students have produced when the primary focus is on oral skills, and on writing skills. An innovative offering from the Office of English Language Programs, Shaping the Way We Teach English, is a 14-module teacher training video series developed and produced in cooperation with the University of Oregon. 'A Pair of Silk Stockings' by Kate Chopin (1 of 2) Short Story in English By InterestingThingsESL http://www.manythings.org/b/e/3299 is the link to the complete story in a playlist. Short Story: 'A Pair of Silk Stockings' by Kate Chopin (1851-1904) Keywords: audiobook ESL EFL Remedial Reading VOA Special English study listen and read along short story === Part 1 === === (The following text is the story as it was originally written.) === Little Mrs. Sommers one day found herself the unexpected possessor of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money, and the way in which it stuffed and bulged her worn old porte-monnaie gave her a feeling of importance such as she had not enjoyed for years. The question of investment was one that occupied her greatly. For a day or two she walked about apparently in a dreamy state, but really absorbed in speculation and calculation. She did not wish to act hastily, to do anything she might afterward regret. But it was during the still hours of the night when she lay awake revolving plans in her mind that she seemed to see her way clearly toward a proper and judicious use of the money. A dollar or two should be added to the price usually paid for Janie's shoes, which would insure their lasting an appreciable time longer than they usually did. She would buy so and so many yardsof percale for new shirt waists for the boys and Janie and Mag. She had intended to make the old ones do by skilful patching. Mag should have another gown. She had seen some beautiful patterns, veritable bargains in the shop windows. And still there would be left enough for new stockings -- two pairs apiece -- and what darning that would save for a while! She would get caps for the boys and sailor-hats for the girls. The vision of her little brood looking fresh and dainty and new for once in their lives excited her and made her restless and wakeful with anticipation. [This is just part of the text. YouTube doesn't allow all of the text. It's too long.]] Tags: along, and, audiobook, efl, english, esl, listen, read, reading, remedial, short, special, story, study, voa 1 Downloads - Last from: http://downthisvideo.com/ (Your Blog here!) |

ESL FUN GAME - Concentration By vibrantray74 Video clips of one of the ESL fun games we played during Elsa's Farewell Party. In this particular video we played the game called "Concentration." Mechanics: 1. Players should sit or stand in a circle. 2. Everyone should know and remember every player's call name. 3. Everyone should follow the rhythm with 4 beats or counting. Tap your laps first, then clap your hands together, after that, snap your fingers on your right hand and followed by snapping your left fingers. 4. While snapping your right fingers, you should say your name and then say the name of the person you wanna call when snapping your left fingers. 5. Everyone should chant this rhyme together specially in the beginning of the game: "Concentration, United Nations. Follow the rhythm. (optional) Concentration now begins. My name, your name...." 6. While the game is going on someone will surely make mistakes. Therefore, whoever makes mistake shall be asked to give anything from them like a watch, pencil, etc. Collect them all until the game ends and punish them accordingly. 7. Since this is a concentration game. It can't be avoided that players would make mistakes, especially, to those people who have bad memory about English names. Everyone should be alert and concentrate on the rhythm while remembering the players names.
