Fuel (in a nongaseous state) does not burn directly. When you apply heat to a fuel, it produces a gas. This gas, combined with oxygen in the air, burns. Understanding the concept of the fire triangle is very important in correctly constructing and maintaining a fire. The three sides of the triangle represent air, heat and fuel. If you remove any of these, the fire will go out. The correct ratio of these components is very important for a fire to burn at its greatest capability. The only way to learn this ratio is to practice. SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION You will have to decide what site and arrangement to use. Before building a fire consider — * The area (terrain and climate) in which you are operating. * The materials and tools available. * How much time you have. * Why you need a fire. * How close is the enemy. Look for a dry spot that — * Is protected from the wind. * Is suitably placed in relation to your shelter (if any). * Will concentrate the heat in the direction you desire. * Has a supply of wood or other fuel available. If you are in a wooded or brush-covered area, clear the brush and scrape the surface soil from the spot you have selected. Clear a circle at least 1 meter in diameter so there is little chance of the fire spreading. If time allows, construct a fire wall using logs or rocks. This wall will help to reflector direct the heat where you want it. It will also reduce flying sparks and cut down on the amount of wind blowing into the fire. However, you will need enough wind to keep the fire burning. CAUTION: Do not use wet or porous rocks as they may explode when heated. In some situations, you may find that an underground fireplace will best meet your needs. It conceals the fire and serves well for cooking food. To make an underground fireplace or "Dakota fire hole" — * Dig a hole in the ground with sloping sides around 45 degrees but deep enough to shield all of the fuel. * On the upwind side of this hole, poke or dig a large connecting hole for ventilation. * Build your fire in the hole but be mindful that with reduced ventilation the fuel needs to be more loosely layered. If you are in a snow-covered area, use green logs to make a dry base for your fire. Trees with wrist-sized trunks are easily broken in extreme cold. Cut or break several green logs and lay them side by side on top of the snow. Add one or two more layers. Place the top layer of logs opposite those below it. Post Olympic jobs are fewer and the pay is less. And the vast majority of rural migrants have no coverage under a flawed social security system. STORY: The global economic slowdown is taking its toll on China and threatens to significantly up the country's unemployed. Rural migrant workers are especially hard hit. [Zhang Zhiyang, Construction Worker]: "It is very difficult to find a job nowadays. It is very difficult to feed ourselves here. Those who have gone home also face difficulties. I will tell you our difficulties -- it is tough to go home. It is also tough to find a job in the city here, and all of us are struggling." Zhang has been sleeping in a hut near a construction site for almost a week. Being out of job has made it very difficult for him to survive in the big city. Those who do manage to find work found themselves in a harsh working environment or working for less pay. [Cao Guangming, Migrant Worker]: "Now it is not easy to find a job, and the pay is lower than before. Before the Olympics, there were more job opportunities, and the pay was also higher. Now jobs and wages are less." Like many migrant workers in the city, Cao is not a legally registered laborer and so does not show up in official unemployment statistics. Under China's social security system, citizens can collect welfare payments only in the city where they hold a household registration permit, usually their birthplace. That means the vast majority of rural migrants have no coverage. [Yi Xianrong, Economist, Academy of Social Sciences]: "Our country is facing a decline on exports. And the reduction of business orders is causing small and medium-sized enterprises, mostly labor-intensive, to close or cut their employees, and most of the employees are migrant workers from the countryside." China's September urban jobless rate of 4.0 percent does not include those who do not report they are out of work. Nor does it include an estimated 150 million migrants working in cities. Fuel (in a nongaseous state) does not burn directly. When you apply heat to a fuel, it produces a gas. This gas, combined with oxygen in the air, burns. Understanding the concept of the fire triangle is very important in correctly constructing and maintaining a fire. The three sides of the triangle represent air, heat and fuel. If you remove any of these, the fire will go out. The correct ratio of these components is very important for a fire to burn at its greatest capability. The only way to learn this ratio is to practice. SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION You will have to decide what site and arrangement to use. Before building a fire consider — * The area (terrain and climate) in which you are operating. * The materials and tools available. * How much time you have. * Why you need a fire. * How close is the enemy. Look for a dry spot that — * Is protected from the wind. * Is suitably placed in relation to your shelter (if any). * Will concentrate the heat in the direction you desire. * Has a supply of wood or other fuel available. If you are in a wooded or brush-covered area, clear the brush and scrape the surface soil from the spot you have selected. Clear a circle at least 1 meter in diameter so there is little chance of the fire spreading. If time allows, construct a fire wall using logs or rocks. This wall will help to reflector direct the heat where you want it. It will also reduce flying sparks and cut down on the amount of wind blowing into the fire. However, you will need enough wind to keep the fire burning. CAUTION: Do not use wet or porous rocks as they may explode when heated. In some situations, you may find that an underground fireplace will best meet your needs. It conceals the fire and serves well for cooking food. To make an underground fireplace or "Dakota fire hole" — * Dig a hole in the ground with sloping sides around 45 degrees but deep enough to shield all of the fuel. * On the upwind side of this hole, poke or dig a large connecting hole for ventilation. * Build your fire in the hole but be mindful that with reduced ventilation the fuel needs to be more loosely layered. If you are in a snow-covered area, use green logs to make a dry base for your fire. Trees with wrist-sized trunks are easily broken in extreme cold. Cut or break several green logs and lay them side by side on top of the snow. Add one or two more layers. Place the top layer of logs opposite those below it. The action has as purpose to raise awareness and alert people about the consequences of the garbage left on Rio's beaches. From a mailing list of surf shops and accredited NGOs, 10,000 boxes containing objects thrown on the sand were sent to people's houses. Besides plastic cups, ice-cream packages, cans and water bottles, each box also contained a label with the following message: "The garbage thrown on the sea returns someday. For everybody." -- leaving it clear that, even who never threw garbage on the beach, one day, may suffer the consequences of such act. The action was also performed in bars in the city of Rio de Janeiro. [View \| Download]	Chinese Unemployment Woes ZHANG: Moving onto China where a slowing global economy is causing growing unemployment among the country's migrant workers. Post Olympic jobs are fewer and the pay is less. And the vast majority of rural migrants have no coverage under a flawed social security system. STORY: The global economic slowdown is taking its toll on China and threatens to significantly up the country's unemployed. Rural migrant workers are especially hard hit. [Zhang Zhiyang, Construction Worker]: "It is very difficult to find a job nowadays. It is very difficult to feed ourselves here. Those who have gone home also face difficulties. I will tell you our difficulties -- it is tough to go home. It is also tough to find a job in the city here, and all of us are struggling." Zhang has been sleeping in a hut near a construction site for almost a week. Being out of job has made it very difficult for him to survive in the big city. Those who do manage to find work found themselves in a harsh working environment or working for less pay. [Cao Guangming, Migrant Worker]: "Now it is not easy to find a job, and the pay is lower than before. Before the Olympics, there were more job opportunities, and the pay was also higher. Now jobs and wages are less." Like many migrant workers in the city, Cao is not a legally registered laborer and so does not show up in official unemployment statistics. Under China's social security system, citizens can collect welfare payments only in the city where they hold a household registration permit, usually their birthplace. That means the vast majority of rural migrants have no coverage. [Yi Xianrong, Economist, Academy of Social Sciences]: "Our country is facing a decline on exports. And the reduction of business orders is causing small and medium-sized enterprises, mostly labor-intensive, to close or cut their employees, and most of the employees are migrant workers from the countryside." China's September urban jobless rate of 4.0 percent does not include those who do not report they are out of work. Nor does it include an estimated 150 million migrants working in cities. Em meio a caminhões e outros veículos de grande porte, o cachorro se aproximou do animal atropelado e, com dificuldade, o arrastou para a margem da rodovia Vespucio Norte.
