Dallas Creates a Public School for Boys

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Girls and boys usually attend classes together in American public schools. But there are some single-sex programs, like a girls public school in Dallas, Texas. It opened in two thousand four. The students have done well enough that the school system is now opening a school for boys.Nakia Douglas is principal of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. He says he was the kind of student that the school is seeking. "I was born and raised in south Dallas by a single parent. I was a neighborhood child. I was that child that -- I would work if I knew the teacher believed in me. But, at the same time, I had a hunger and desire for more."Educational researchers say boys learn in different ways and mature more slowly than girls, and are more likely to leave school. Being in class with the opposite sex can also take attention away from learning. Kendall Keeter thinks the boys school will be good for his son the way the girls school was for his daughter. "Our thought was to also give our son an opportunity that would best prepare him for college in the same manner she was prepared, and I can't imagine any other option that would have prepared her better."Another parent, Madeline Hayes, also likes the idea of a publicly funded school for boys. "This is something, as cheesy as it sounds, that I've always dreamed about, that there will be a boys school that doesn't charge twenty-five thousand dollars a year, but would give the same academics, the same level of interaction and leadership."The school is for grades six through nine. It will offer college preparatory classes and leadership courses even on weekends. Principal Douglas says the boys will be urged to support one another. "All of our young men we call 'brother.' So it may be Brother Malyk Davis or Brother Samuel Keeter. The young men understand they are their brother's keeper. And so the young men are really learning to be responsible not only for themselves, but also for their brothers here at the campus."Most students who want to be accepted into the Obama Academy in Dallas will need to have good grades and pass a number of tests. But ten to fifteen percent will not have to meet all of the entrance requirements. Principal Nakia Douglas says they will have to show they have a strong character and a desire to learn. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. Shortage of Nurses Is Worldwide, but Worst in Poorer Nations

This is the VOA Special English Development Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish The health care industry needs more nurses. All areas of the world face a nursing shortage. But the shortage is most severe in developing countries. Many of their nurses leave. They move to more developed nations for better pay, better working conditions and better chances for career development.A World Bank report earlier this year called attention to the problem. For example, nearly two thousand nurses left the Caribbean between two thousand two and two thousand six. Caribbean nations currently have about one nurse for every one thousand people. The ratio of nurses to population is about ten times higher in the United States and countries in the European Union. Currently, more than twenty-one thousand nurses who trained in the Caribbean are working in the United States, Canada and Britain.Gaetan Lafortune is with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris. He says the nursing shortage also affects industrialized countries. Mr. Lafortune says a large number of nurses are expected to retire within the next ten years. At the same time, the health care needs of aging populations are expected to grow, intensifying the shortage of nurses. He says some researchers in the United States have projected that there may be a shortage of close to a million nurses by two thousand twenty. The United States is one of thirty-one countries in the O.E.C.D. Gaetan Lafortune says in recent years many of the countries increased their efforts to hire foreign nurses. But he says this has raised concern that O.E.C.D. countries were mainly exporting their shortage problem to countries that may have an even greater need for these nurses. In May, the World Health Assembly approved a global code of practice on the international recruitment of health workers. The assembly is made up of countries in the World Health Organization. The code advises against actively recruiting health workers from developing countries that face severe shortages. The world also faces a shortage of nursing trainers. As a result, nursing schools are forced to turn away qualified students. And that's the VOA Special English Development Report. You can find transcripts, MP3s and podcasts of our reports at voaspecialenglish.com. What are your thoughts about the nursing shortage and what should be done about it? Share your comments on our website or on Facebook at VOA Learning English. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 07June2010)

Microsavings Could Mean Big Gains for the World's Poor

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish When it comes to savings, no amount is too small. Microsaving is a growing part of the international movement of microfinance. The aim is to bring financial services to poor people. Modern microfinance started with Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh. In the nineteen seventies, he started small loan programs that would become the Grameen Bank. Currently, microcredit providers are in over one hundred countries. Now, microfinance institutions are starting to offer other services, including savings plans. Recently, the non-profit group Small Enterprise Education and Promotion held a conference in Washington. SEEP works with over one hundred twenty groups around the world in efforts to cut poverty. It does this by supporting small businesses. The goal is help microfinance industry experts share ideas. One idea is called Financial Access at Birth, or FAB. It is designed to start each person with a financial citizenship at birth through a savings account connected to a bank deposit. Rosita Najmi is FAB's program director. She says FAB starts with financial inclusion, but creates other possibilities for inclusion across other sectors of health or education. Mobile or wireless technology will be important to many microfinance services. One meeting at the SEEP conference examined a mobile phone application for saving money. Debbie Dean of the Grameen Foundation says these efforts can also be extended to other financial services. They could include a combination of savings programs and money transfer programs. She says this could provide the most flexibility and convenience for savers. But offering savings, payments and other services requires more training and controls. Rashid Bajwa leads Pakistan's largest microfinance organization. He says more training is needed. And, he says, microfinance institutions will need specialized people when they start offering savings programs. Small savings deposits add up. And interest over time makes them grow. This can have a surprising effect for savers and societies. Rashid Bajwa puts it this way. He says the amount of money that poor people have is imaginable. For VOA Special English, I'm Carolyn Presutti. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 18Nov2011)

Broken Instruments Are Music to the Ears of These School Repairmen

From http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish LARRY JERNIGAN: "This is a leak light. So if you see light, then that means air is getting through. That means the lower notes won't play and it's a chance that it will diminish the child's playing experience, which we don't want." Larry Jernigan wants children to have a joyful experience with music. LARRY JERNIGAN: "I think that works." Charles West feels the same way. CHARLES WEST: "Actually love my job. Sometimes it seems not, you know, to be work. But it is work." LARRY JERNIGAN: "I like the fact that I work around music all day, that my job involves music, it involves the support of music, and it involves the education of music." Charles West and Larry Jernigan have worked together for almost 20 years. They fix musical instruments for the Washington, D.C., public schools. Last year, they repaired more than 600 instruments. CHARLES WEST: "There are two of us here. We do brass, string, woodwind, percussion, piano and electric keyboard. And if you take it outside, you are talking six, seven different individuals to fix what I just stated." The two men say they have yet to meet an instrument they could not fix. CHARLES WEST: "There are instances when we run across an instrument that is just beyond economical repair. So we just strip the parts from that and use those parts to give life to other instruments." Both men are musicians and music lovers. So learning to do repairs was easy. CHARLES WEST: "I have been a musician all of my life. I am almost 50 now and I have been playing instruments since I was six years old. I played in an orchestra here in the city. I majored in music in college. And I played in an army band." LARRY JERNIGAN: "I was formerly trained in the piano and guitar. The alto sax, the clarinet, and the flute, I picked up while working here." In addition to fixing instruments, the men also go to schools to show teachers and students how to make minor repairs. West believes that children who start early and stay involved with music do well in other areas of their lives. CHARLES WEST: "I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works. They learn teamwork. They learn solo work. They learn camaraderie, they learn patience, and they learn respect." But he has concerns about music in the electronic age. CHARLES WEST: "We are not telling you to throw the PlayStation or the Xboxes in the trash. But this electronic age and this instant age has taken away from the sit down, the patience. There is no patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence, it takes time." Jernigan says he and West are lucky because they can enjoy music on the job. And they say they really enjoy the performances of D.C. students. LARRY JERNIGAN: "When I get to go see a concert or go see one of the bands perform, or the children playing, or the choir singing, that is probably the one that gets me the most because we had a big part into making that a success." I'm Mario Ritter.

Eugenics - Human Sperm Created in British Lab

British scientists claim a first in medical history by using embryonic stem cells to create human sperm in a laboratory. Researchers at Newcastle Uni hope it will help infertile couples but it has sparked an ethical debate. Sky's Gerard Tubb reports. In a world first, British scientists have grown human sperm in the laboratory. The breakthrough in stem cell science offers a potential cure for male infertility and could be used in IVF clinics in as little as five years. It would allow thousands of men to father children that are genetically their own, possibly from just a sliver of their skin. But the cutting-edge work is fraught with medical and ethical problems. It raises the possibility of babies being born entirely through artificial means, and even the macabre scenario of long-dead men 'fathering' children from beyond the grave. The Newcastle University work centres on stem cells - 'blank' cells with the ability to turn into other cell types. Biologist Karim Nayernia created a cocktail of chemicals and vitamins that turned human stem cells into sperm, the journal Stem Cells and Development reports today. Viewed through a microscope, they have heads and tails and swim like normal sperm, and Professor Nayernia is 'convinced' they would be capable of fertilising eggs and creating babies. He has more safety checks to carry out but plans to apply for permission to use some of the artificial sperm to fertilise eggs for research purposes. The stem cells used were taken from embryos in the first days of life but the professor hopes to repeat his success with skin cells taken from a man's arm. These would first be exposed to a mixture that wound back their biological clocks to embryonic stem cell state, before being transformed into sperm. Using IVF techniques, the artificial sperm could be injected into eggs, allowing men who do not produce sperm to father children of their own. However, British law forbids the use of lab-grown sperm or eggs in fertility treatment - a situation the researchers believe needs to change. Lab-grown sperm could also shed light on the causes of infertility, leading to new treatments for the heartbreaking but little-understood condition that affects one in six couples. Identification of a flaw in the sperm-making process could lead to the creation of a 'miracle pill' to boost fertility. Professor Nayernia said: 'This is an important development as it will allow researchers to study in detail how sperm forms and lead to a better understanding of infertility in men - why it happens and what is causing it. Male infertility is a growing problem and no one knows why. We'll be able to study the effects of pollution and nutrition in the lab.' But the researcher also acknowledged that the technique could potentially be applied to skin cells taken from men who have been dead for many years, allowing them to 'father' children. He said: 'This is the Jurassic Park scenario. In theory this would be possible but human reproduction is not a purely biological process. We have to think of the psychological, social and ethical considerations.' The Newcastle team tried to create sperm from stem cells from female embryos but failed - suggesting that men will always have an important role in the creation of life. But, in time, it may be possible to create eggs from a woman's stem cells, raising the possibility of artificial eggs and sperm being combined to create children through entirely artificial means. Rival stem cell experts questioned whether the professor had created fully-functioning sperm and warned that similar experiments on mice had led to the birth of young with a host of health problems. Opponents said it was wrong to meddle with the creation of human life. Josephine Quintavalle, of campaign group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, said: 'To take a viable human embryo and destroy it in a bid to create dodgy sperm to create a not-so-healthy embryo is experimentation for experimentation's sake. 'Infertility is an issue we have to address but this is not an ethical solution. If the solution involves the sacrifice of human life, then it should be apparent to anyone that it is unacceptable.' Dr Trevor Stammers, a GP and lecturer in healthcare ethics, warned that the technology could be 'used and abused' to create children who did not know who their father was. And he said there were easier ways of tackling fertility problems. He said: 'Obviously there are men who through no bad habits or indulgences find themselves with a fertility problem but alcohol, smoking and drug misuse don't help. 'Alcohol alone is a huge cause of infertility in men.'
