Pagi itu cuaca di lokasi Pantai Parangtritis cukup cerah, penonton sudah banyak yg berdatangan. Hari itu, hari Sabtu dan merupakan waktu liburan sekolah, sehingga banyak yg ingin menyaksikan acara menarik ini. Tanpa disangka-sangka, gempa tektonik pada sabtu pagi 27 Mei 2006 dengan skala richter 5,9 telah menggoyang bumi yogyakarta dan Jawa Tengah. Sekali lagi Allah menunjukkan kekuasaanNya kepada umat manusia. Pada saat pemerintah dan masyarakat menunggu-nunggu lahar dari gunung Merapi, dan mempersiapkan segala sesuatu akibat letusan gunung, ternyata yang terjadi bukan ledakan gunung, tetapi gempa tektonik yang berasal dari pergeseran lempengan bumi di bawah laut, sehingga mengakibatkan hancurnya gedung-gedung di kawasan Bantul, Sleman, Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta dan sebagian wilayah Jawa Tengah. Ribuan rumah di Bantul rata dengan tanah, ribuan jiwa meninggal dunia menghadap Illahi akibat terkena reruntuhan bangunan, ini semua merupakan peringatan dari Allah untuk kita semua. Ini juga merupakan musibah Nasional dan pada waktu yang sama ini merupakan ujian keimanan dan ujian untuk meningkatkan pahala. Jika kita bersabar dalam menghadapi musibah tersebut maka pahala akan dapat kita raih dan ukuran tingkat iman kita akan naik beberapa derjat; tetapi jika kita tidak sabar, atau sampai mengeluh kepada Tuhan mengapa bencana terjadi, maka berarti kita telah mengalami degradasi iman. Bagi mereka yang meninggal dunia, mereka telah dipilih Allah untuk menjadi syuhada, sebab mereka meninggal akibat musibah yang terjadi. Jika dalam hadis disebutkan bahwa mereka yang meinggal akibat sakit perut, akibat tenggelam dapat menjadi syahid, maka dapat kita qiyaskan juga mereka yang meninggal akibat terkena runtuhan bangunan, akibat bencana ini juga merupakan syuhada sebab mereka terkena musibah dan bencana alam. Pada tahun 1867 di Yogyakarta pernah terjadi gempa bumi yang merobohkan 372 rumah, 5 orang meninggal dunia. Pada Tahun 1943 terjadi lagi, 2800 rumah hancur, 213 orang meninggal, 2096 orang luka. Tahun 1981 gempa di Yogyakarta mengakibatkan dinding Hotel Ambarukmo retak-retak. Dari isu yang beredar di masyarakat, gempa itu adalah akibat dari ledakan Bom Nuklir. Isu tersebut sebenarnya adalah kabar bohong belaka.
