The procedure to do this is as follows. Wash and dry your hands. Discard the paper towel into the trash. On a tray covered with paper towels, assemble the following equipment: * a pair of disposable gloves * a bed protector * a sealable plastic storage bag * a basin of warm water with a pump of liquid soap in it * (2) clean washcloths and a clean hand towel. * Place the equipment tray on a stable surface adjacent to the bed. Remove the bed covers, but keep the patient warm with a blanket. Wash and dry your hands. Put on your disposable gloves. Place the bed protector under the patient's thighs to keep the bed dry. Over your dominant hand, fold a washcloth into a mitt and squeeze it in the warm soapy water. With the other hand, gently grasp the penis, pull the foreskin back if uncircumcised, and with the warm, soapy mitt clean the glans or head of the penis. Squeeze the mitt in the warm, soapy water and then wash the first 4 inches of the catheter without pulling on it. Discard the mitt and dry the penis and catheter with the clean towel. To make the patient more comfortable, the perineum and anus can now be cleaned. Use the second washcloth as a mitt, wash from top to bottom taking great care not to touch the previously washed areas and the catheter or tubes. Dry the area carefully with the towel, again avoiding the previously washed areas. Remove the bed protector. Check that the catheter and tubes are correctly placed. Remove your gloves and discard them into the plastic storage bag. Replace the bed covers. Take the equipment tray into the bathroom, place the washcloths and towel into the washer, seal the plastic bag and discard it into the trash. Clean the basin, which held the warm soapy water and dry it with a paper towel. Wash and dry the bed protector. Wash and dry your hands. Carefully, wash and dry your hands for good patient education The male can sit on the toilet or lie on a bed with back and head propped up. Lubricate the catheter for a distance of 6 to 8 inches. If necessary, retract the foreskin. Clean the head of the penis with a soapy washcloth or an antibacterial wipe. Hold the penis upright, and insert the lubricated catheter into the urethral opening of the penis. Thread it in slowly until urine flows, usually a distance of 6 to 8 inches. When urine flows, allow all the urine to drain into the hat. Slowly, pull the catheter out. Wash the catheter with soap and water, dry it with a clean towel and store it in a resealable plastic bag. The catheter may be re-used for 1-2 months. Measure the amount of urine in the hat and note the volume in the post void residual column of your record. Discard the urine into the toilet and wash out the hat. Wash and dry your hands for good patient education. * During the insertion, never force the catheter. * If you meet resistance and cannot advance the catheter, remove the catheter and notify your healthcare provider. Do not get out of bed directly from lying flat. Always sit up in bed for a few minutes. Move the bedcovers well out of the way. Move nearer to the side of the bed. Pivot your body and legs so that you are sitting with your legs dangling over the side of the bed. Hold the mattress with your hands for support and keep your back straight. Gently swing your legs back and forth, bend and stretch your ankles and twiddle your toes. If you feel faint or weak, go back to bed for patient education Have your helper put on your socks, and shoes or sturdy slippers with low heels and non-slip soles. Use a footstool if the bed is too high for your feet to reach the floor without sliding off the bed. Stand still on the floor with your feet slightly apart for a few seconds. Have your helper put on and fasten your robe. For the first few times out of bed, when you feel strong enough, walk a few steps to a bedside chair with arms. When you reach the chair, turn round so that your calves are touching the front of the chair. Bend your knees, grasp both arms of the chair firmly and lower yourself backward into the chair. Reverse the process to get out of the chair for patient education At any time, * if you feel weak * or dizzy * or have chest pain, * let your helper get you back to bed * and inform your doctor. The procedure to do this is as follows. Wash and dry your hands. Discard the paper towel into the trash. On a tray covered with paper towels, assemble the following equipment: * a pair of disposable gloves * a bed protector * a sealable plastic storage bag * a basin of warm water with a pump of liquid soap in it * (2) clean washcloths and a clean hand towel. * Place the equipment tray on a stable surface adjacent to the bed. Remove the bed covers, but keep the patient warm with a blanket. Wash and dry your hands. Put on your disposable gloves. Place the bed protector under the patient's thighs to keep the bed dry. Over your dominant hand, fold a washcloth into a mitt and squeeze it in the warm soapy water. With the other hand, gently grasp the penis, pull the foreskin back if uncircumcised, and with the warm, soapy mitt clean the glans or head of the penis. Squeeze the mitt in the warm, soapy water and then wash the first 4 inches of the catheter without pulling on it. Discard the mitt and dry the penis and catheter with the clean towel. To make the patient more comfortable, the perineum and anus can now be cleaned. Use the second washcloth as a mitt, wash from top to bottom taking great care not to touch the previously washed areas and the catheter or tubes. Dry the area carefully with the towel, again avoiding the previously washed areas. Remove the bed protector. Check that the catheter and tubes are correctly placed. Remove your gloves and discard them into the plastic storage bag. Replace the bed covers. Take the equipment tray into the bathroom, place the washcloths and towel into the washer, seal the plastic bag and discard it into the trash. Clean the basin, which held the warm soapy water and dry it with a paper towel. Wash and dry the bed protector. Wash and dry your hands. Carefully, wash and dry your hands for good patient education The male can sit on the toilet or lie on a bed with back and head propped up. Lubricate the catheter for a distance of 6 to 8 inches. If necessary, retract the foreskin. Clean the head of the penis with a soapy washcloth or an antibacterial wipe. Hold the penis upright, and insert the lubricated catheter into the urethral opening of the penis. Thread it in slowly until urine flows, usually a distance of 6 to 8 inches. When urine flows, allow all the urine to drain into the hat. Slowly, pull the catheter out. Wash the catheter with soap and water, dry it with a clean towel and store it in a resealable plastic bag. The catheter may be re-used for 1-2 months. Measure the amount of urine in the hat and note the volume in the post void residual column of your record. Discard the urine into the toilet and wash out the hat. Wash and dry your hands for good patient education. * During the insertion, never force the catheter. * If you meet resistance and cannot advance the catheter, remove the catheter and notify your healthcare provider.
