Louisiania

1996 performance of the M 'N' M (Mazzy-Newberger-Muranyi) Trio at the Sancy Snow Jazz Festival, Mt. Dore, France.

Two months later, the trio recorded "Halfway to Heaven" for Stomp Off Records. http://www.jazzbymail.com/ViewArtist....'n'%20M%20Trio

Here's an excerpt from the notes by jazz historian and clarinetist Fred Starr:

Early jazz produced surprisingly few really small groups. Yes, there were string bands playing on the galleries of New Orleans homes, and Jelly Roll Morton did his famous trio recordings in the ''20s. But these were exceptions. And no one - absolutely no one - conceived the unlikely possibility of a trio consisting of clarinet, high tenor banjo, and profundo CC tuba. Like the bumblebee, this arrangement shouldn''t fly. Yet, the M ''N'' M Trio makes it do so, gloriously.

So unlikely is this combination that a word about its origins is in order. The key figure is definitely Jimmy Mazzy, the virtuoso banjo player from Holliston, Massachusetts. Known to thousands for his long run with the Paramount Jazz Band of Boston and for his inexhaustible mine of rare lyrics, this self-effacing artist carries on the great banjo tradition of Fred van Eps and Ernest Jones, except on the tenor banjo rather than the older five string classic instrument. As a professional piano technician he is accustomed to precision, which shows in all he does. A show-stopper by himself, Mazzy soars still higher and gains yet more freedom for himself when someone is playing a bass line beneath him. Enter Eli Newberger, as unusual a tuba player as Mazzy is banjoist. Tubas came late to classic jazz and their role was limited to repetitious oompahs. Not Eli. Grounded in piano playing and be-bop, Eli conceived a new, more complex role for the tuba. Its hallmarks: string bass-like lines, the highlighting of unusual chords, and an aggressive playfulness that is akin to an elephant performing on the balance beam. Enter "Big Joe" Muranyi, the finest jazz clarinetist of his generation. Long a fixture of the New York scene, Muranyi''s musical roots trace back through Martin''s Ferry, West Virginia, to his parents'' native Hungary, point zero of one of Europe''s most lyrical traditions in music and most intricate schools of reed playing. Best known for his years with Louis Armstrong''s All-Stars, Muranyi honed his style in smaller groups on the minuscule bandstand at Nick''s in the Village - the perfect preparation for the Mazzy-Newberger team. Taken together, this heady mix of eclecticism, virtuosity, and lyricism imparts to the M ''N'' M Trio a quality that is exciting, exceedingly pleasant and wonderfully fresh. No wonder the French critic exploded with "Bravo les MNM! Pourquoi pas les ''MMM'' (Master-Master-Master)?" Well spoken! - S. Frederick Starr

Al Jolson (May 26, 1886--October 23, 1950) was a highly acclaimed American singer, comedian and actor of Jewish heritage whose career lasted from 1911 until his death in 1950. He was one of the most popular entertainers of the 20th century whose influence extended to other popular performers, including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Mandy Patinkin, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis, Jr., Eddie Fisher, Jerry Lewis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Michael Jackson, Rufus Wainwright, David Lee Roth and Rod Stewart.

Al Jolson was the first popular singer to make a spectacular "event" out of singing a song. Prior to Jolson, popular singers such as John McCormack and Henry Burr would stand still, with only very minimal gesturing as they performed. In contrast, Jolson displayed tremendous energy using dynamic gestures and other movement. Jolson was the first entertainer to have a runway extending out from the center of the stage, so he could be closer to the audience. It was very common for Jolson to sit on the end of the runway and have personal one-on-one conversations with audience members, which had also never been done before.

Jolson was known to stop major Broadway productions in which he was performing, turn to the audience and ask them if they would rather hear him sing instead of watching the rest of the play. The answer was always a resounding yes, and Jolson would spend at least the next hour singing an impromptu concert. His friend George Burns said, "...Jolson was all show business!"

Perdido: Mussolini, Klein, Patruno, Tomelleri, Prina

Second Line Jazzband plays 'Good Night Irene'
By ulivids

Band from Sweden: Jesper Albrektsson (tp, voc), Niklas Carlsson (tb, voc), Per Bach (db), Olof Skoog (ts, cl, voc), Johan Horner (dr), Anders Wasén (bjo). Filmed on 08-09-07 at 20th Jazz Days 2007 Gelsenkirchen (Germany).
The Second Line Jazzband was formed in 1989 and since then has established a position as one of the most popular traditional jazzbands in Europe. Original improvisations and arrangements and a tremendous intensity in their playing have given them oppurtunities to perform at many jazz clubs and festivals, on TV and radio in, for example, England, Germany, Holland, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Finland, Denmark, Norway and, of course, Sweden. Many prominent musicians have guested the band over the years such as Antti Sarpila, Lillian Boutté and Orange Kellin. Their unique style comes from their widely differing musical backgrounds but above all it is the New Orleans revival style which gives them the greatest inspiration and is the kind of music they specialize in. They do best to keep the New Orleans music alive.

"Rosetta" with Ed Polcer, Patruno, Havens, Vachè
By Michaelsjazz

"Rosetta"
ED POLCER & His All Stars featuring LINO PATRUNO
Ed Polcer (cornet), Bob Havens (trombone), Allan Vachè (clarinet), Nando de Luca (piano), Lino Patruno (guitar), Luciano Milanese (bass), Stefano Bagnoli (drums)
San Marino Jazz Festival, July 2000

Bob Havens (born May 3, 1930) is an American big band and jazz musician who appeared on The Lawrence Welk Show from 1960 to 1982. His instrument is the trombone.

Born to a musical family in Quincy, Illinois. He began studying violin and trombone at age seven and played both instruments throughout his school years. He landed his first professional job with a local dance band at age 12. By the age of 16, his talent as a trombonist was recognized with a scholarship from the Interlochen Music Camp in Michigan and Bob held the first trombone chair in the school's 250 piece concert band. He later held the first trombone chair in the Quincy Symphony while also playing in many popular dance groups in Illinois.
After serving in the Illinois National Guard as a bandsman during the Korean War, he left Quincy in 1955 to tour with the Ralph Flanagan Orchestra. In 1956, he joined George Girard's Dixieland Band at the Famous Door in New Orleans. There, he met his idol, Jack Teagarden.
In 1957, Bob joined Al Hirt at Dan's Pier 600 on Bourbon Street when Hirt formed his very first band. The front line consisted of Hirt, Havens and Pete Fountain. During the time in New Orleans, he recorded albums for Good Times Jazz and Vic labels with the Girrad band and on Verve and Audio Fidelity with Hirt. He also recorded about a dozen albums for the Southland label with many other New Orleans musicians.
Bob stayed with this group until 1960 when he was persuaded to move to the West Coast and join the Lawrence Welk Orchestra as a featured soloist on their weekly TV series. His brilliant tenure with this show lasted for 23 years until the show ended in 1982.
Since then, he continued to be active as a free-lance professional working often with the Bob Crosby Bob Cats and the Benny Goodman Orchestra (led by clarinetist Peanuts Hucko). From 1985 to 1995, Havens played with the Great Pacific Jazz Band along with Bob Ringwald (lead vocals/piano), Don Nelson (saxophone), and Zeke Zarchy (trumpet).
Recently in 2005, he performed with the North Carolina Pops Orchestra at Campbell University with fellow Welk star Ava Barber for a benefit raising money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Bob Havens lives in Buies Creek, North Carolina and continues to record and appear at jazz festivals and concerts throughout the world.
