Next-Generation Recycling Using Industrial Waste Paper By Diginfonews DigInfo - http://movie.diginfo.tv Kankyo Keiei Sougou Kenkyusyo is currently developing a variety of products made from industrial waste paper. The Institute has already developed environmentally friendly, reusable chopsticks that contain a recycled paper content of over 50 percent. These chopsticks can be washed over and over and still be reused. The Institute is also in the process of developing "Mapka" which is a food container made primarily out of recycled paper. These products are created out of a molding material using kneading technology that combines waste paper powder with a polyolefin-based resin. Mapka containers are a new kind of material that maintain the properties of paper as well as possess the elasticity of plastic. After use, they can be recycled like paper products and have potential as a plastic substitute In the Institute's Earth Republic line of business, waste paper is mixed with a special starch with a polyolefin-based resin in order to produce foam. These foams are manufactured by extruding foam through steaming the mixture. Currently, these foams are in demand by various manufacturers to be used as packing materials or as heat insulation material. At the 2007 International Robot Exhibition, Kokoro Co., Ltd. exhibited its dental training robot, called Simuloid, as an example of applications for technology that can simulate human expressions, which Kokoro has developed through the manikin-type robot Actroid. During a dental check-up, the robot simulates a patient, reacting through its voice and movements. When the check-up is over, the dental techniques used and the results of treatment to the patient are stored and reviewed. The skin of the manikin's face is very flexible, and the manikin can show reactions like those of real people. For example, it can close and open its eyes, which can also shine or turn dull. It can also blink and can raise its hands. In this way, the manikin can provide practice at responding suitably to patients' reactions and expressions during treatment at a university dental department. The software for the special-purpose computer in the chair unit was developed by J. Morita Manufacturing Corporation, and the tooth units and tooth sensors were developed by Nissin, Inc. and Tokyo Sensor Co., Ltd. At the Good Design Award Expo 2008, Sanyo displayed a range of their products developed in line with the companies GAIA design concept. The display include the Eneloop branded line of products, which won the Good Design Grand Prize for 2007. The Eneloop products on display include solar chargers for charging Eneloop rechargeable batteries and charging stations for Wii remote controls. Sanyo states that with the expanded production of the Eneloop line and wider use of rechargable batteries in general, the number of batteries produced could be reduced from the current 40 billion units per year, to half that by the year 2020 with a resulting CO2 reduction of 1 million tons. The AQUA line of washing machines was also on display. The environmentally conscious features include; Ozone Rinsing, which uses ozone infused water to dissolve greasy stains, Air Wash 3, for disinfecting, deodorizing, and removing stains from clothes in a 10 minute dry wash cycle, and Aqualoop direct, which can purify used bathwater by infusing it with ozone, and then reuse it to wash clothes, reducing the amount of tap water used from the 174 liters used in a typical washing machine to only 7 liters for one load of washing. Murata Girl is 50cm tall and weighs 5kg. It is equipped with two tilt-angle detection gyro sensors. It maintains balance by monitoring gyro sensor signals to control the movement of the wheel and the rotation of a fly wheel inside her torso. It also uses a pair of ultrasonic sensors to measure the distance between an obstacle and herself. Murata Manufacturing, which promotes science education as a part of its corporate social responsibility activities, developed Murata Girl in order to respond to the voice of children who requested the development of a unicycle-riding robot.
