DIABETES By lmo1707 La diabetes mellitus (DM) o diabetes sacarina es un síndrome orgánico multisistémico crónico que se caracteriza por un aumento de los niveles de glucosa en la sangre (conocido médicamente como hiperglucemia) resultado de concentraciones bajas de la hormona insulina o por su inadecuado uso por parte del cuerpo, que conducirá posteriormente a alteraciones en el metabolismo de los carbohidratos, lípidos y proteínas. La poliuria (producción excesiva de orina), la polidipsia (incremento de la sed), la pérdida de peso, algunas veces polifagia (aumento anormal de la necesidad de comer) y la visión borrosa son los síntomas cardinales de este padecimiento. La Organización Mundial de la Salud reconoce tres formas de diabetes mellitus: tipo 1, tipo 2 y diabetes gestacional (ocurre durante el embarazo), cada una con diferentes causas y con distinta incidencia. Varios procesos patológicos están involucrados en el desarrollo de la diabetes, estos varían desde destrucción autoinmune de las células β del páncreas con la posterior deficiencia de insulina como consecuencia característica de la DM tipo 1, hasta anormalidades que resultan en la resistencia a la acción de la insulina como ocurre en la DM tipo 2. La etiología de la diabetes gestacional es parecida a la de la DM tipo 2, debido a que las hormonas del embarazo pueden crear insulinorresistencia en una mujer predispuesta genéticamente a este padecimiento. Para el año 2000, de acuerdo con la OMS, se estimó que alrededor de 171 millones de personas eran diabéticos en el mundo y que llegarán a 370 millones en 2030. He notes that chronic disease accounts for 7 in 10 deaths and 75 cents of every dollar spent on health care in the United States. As 17th U.S. surgeon general, Carmona worked to revise our nation's approach to health by emphasizing the importance of increasing prevention, eliminating health disparities and improving health literacy. Carmona's rise to being "doctor of the nation" is particularly remarkable because of his disadvantaged childhood. He was homeless at age 6 and a high-school dropout at 17. Join us to hear Carmona's insights about our health-care challenges and opportunities - The Commonwealth Club of California Dr. Richard H. Carmona was born to a poor family in New York City. Dr. Carmona experienced homelessness, hunger and health disparities during his youth. The experiences greatly sensitized him to the relationships among culture, health, education and economic status and shaped his future. After dropping out of high school, Dr. Carmona enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. While serving, he earned his General Equivalency Diploma and went on to become a combat-decorated Special Forces Vietnam veteran. After leaving active duty, he was able to attend Bronx Community College of the City University of New York through an open enrollment program for veterans. He earned an associate of arts degree and then attended the University of California, San Francisco, where he received a bachelor of science degree (1977) and medical degree (1979). At the University of California Medical School, Dr. Carmona was awarded the prestigious gold-headed cane as the top graduate. Originally trained in general and vascular surgery after medical school, Dr. Carmona completed a National Institutes of Health-sponsored fellowship in trauma, burns and critical care. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Recruited jointly by the Tucson (Arizona) Medical Center and the University of Arizona, Dr. Carmona started and directed Arizona's first regional trauma care system, and became the chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical System, a professor of surgery, public health and family and community medicine at the University of Arizona, and the Pima County Sheriff's Department surgeon and deputy sheriff. PostCare™ Basic Center: Getting Out of Bed After Surgery By postcarecom http://www.PreOp.com Patient ED @ 617-379-1582 INFO his program provides you with tips to help you get out of bed after abdominal or chest surgery for patient education For the first few days when you come home after surgery, it is always best to have a family member or friend help you to get out of bed. Do not get out of bed directly from lying flat. Always sit up in bed for a few minutes. Move the bedcovers well out of the way. Move nearer to the side of the bed. Pivot your body and legs so that you are sitting with your legs dangling over the side of the bed. Hold the mattress with your hands for support and keep your back straight. Gently swing your legs back and forth, bend and stretch your ankles and twiddle your toes. If you feel faint or weak, go back to bed for patient education Have your helper put on your socks, and shoes or sturdy slippers with low heels and non-slip soles. Use a footstool if the bed is too high for your feet to reach the floor without sliding off the bed. Stand still on the floor with your feet slightly apart for a few seconds. Have your helper put on and fasten your robe. For the first few times out of bed, when you feel strong enough, walk a few steps to a bedside chair with arms. When you reach the chair, turn round so that your calves are touching the front of the chair. Bend your knees, grasp both arms of the chair firmly and lower yourself backward into the chair. Reverse the process to get out of the chair for patient education At any time, * if you feel weak * or dizzy * or have chest pain, * let your helper get you back to bed * and inform your doctor. Some additional tips for the helper to follow for patient education * Make sure your own footwear has non-slip soles. * Remove any hazards from the floor, such as slip rugs, frayed carpet or linoleum, or electric cords. * Stand at the side of your patient, not directly in front * Avoid lifting your patient under the arms.
