The flight originated from Miami, Florida, United States's Miami International Airport. On October 2, 1996, shortly after takeoff just past midnight, the Boeing 757 airliner crew discovered that their basic flight instruments were behaving erratically and reported receiving contradictory serial emergency messages from the onboard computer, such as rudder ratio, overspeed, underspeed and flying too low. The crew declared an emergency and requested an immediate return to the airport. Faced with the lack of reliable basic flight instruments, constantly receiving contradictory warnings from the aircraft's flight computer (some of which were valid and some of which were not), and continuously believing that they were at a safe altitude, pilot Eric Schreiber and copilot David Fernández decided to cautiously begin the descent for the approach to the airport. Since the flight was at night over water, no visual references could be made to convey to the pilots their true altitude or aid the pilots in the descent. Also, as a consequence of the pilot's inability to precisely monitor the aircraft's airspeed or vertical speed they experienced multiple stalls resulting in rapid loss of altitude with no corresponding change on the altimeter. While the altimeter indicated an altitude of approximately 9,700 feet, the aircraft's true altitude was in fact much lower. It struck the water approximately twenty-five minutes after emergency declaration, making the pilots realize the true altitude of the airliner; for twenty seconds the pilots tried to make the airliner climb. The airliner then crashed into the water.[1] All nine crew members and sixty-one passengers died. After the crash recovery crews found nine bodies floating; the rest of the bodies sank with the airliner. Agua En La Luna LCROSS Data Indicates Water on Moon By Elgordygerardo Washington, Nov. 13 (EFE) .- The U.S. space agency NASA announced today that it found evidence that there is water on the moon, which represents a big step towards the establishment of human settlements in the Earth's satellite. "We found water, and not just a little, but a significant amount," he told a press conference Anthony Colaprete, Ames Research Center NASA, Moffett Field (California). On October 9 the LCROSS spacecraft hit the moon's south pole in a crater called Cabeus. The artifact of $ 79 million, preceded by a section of the Centaur rocket that propelled him, was sent to the lunar surface to raise a cloud of material that scientists could analyze for the presence of water ice. Preliminary data obtained from the analysis of these materials "indicate that the mission discovered, successfully, water ... and this discovery opens a new chapter in our knowledge of the moon," NASA said. "We are thrilled," said Colaprete. "Many lines of evidence show that water was present in both the vapor cloud that rose high angle, as in the debris thrown at lower angle of the impact of Centaur" he added. "The concentration and distribution of water and other substances require further analysis, but we can safely say that (the crater) Cabeus contains water," said Colaprete. The crash site, in permanent shadow side of the crater, did not receive sunlight in billions of years, and scientists could analyze the dust, steam and rocks erected by the impact when they rose above Cabeus edge and absorbed light. This allowed for spectrographic measurements, ie the analysis of light absorbed at different wavelengths reveals different compounds, and scientists saw the signs of water under infrared and ultraviolet light. "We see evidence of the presence of water on two instruments," said Colaprete. "And that's what gives us such certainty of our conclusions," he said. NASA, which hopes to send astronauts to the Moon by 2020, plans to establish a human-inhabited base permanently to the lunar surface and serve as a stopover point in space travel longer. Finding volumes of ice on the Moon that can provide water for human residents is a substantial advance in the project to sustain a lunar base. The ice may be used for drinking water and as a source of hydrogen for rocket fuel. On the basis of their measurements, the team calculated that there Colaprete in view of their instruments about 100 liters of water. Scientists have speculated for years that the permanently shadowed craters at the moon's south pole may contain water ice on the surface because it would explain the presence of significant quantities of hydrogen in these regions. If water is formed or deposited back thousands of million years, "these deposits polar ice could give clues about the history and evolution of the solar system, NASA said. The presence of water on the moon and had found an instrument built by NASA and sent in 2001 on board India's probe, Chandrayaan-1, but found in small quantities and linked to the lunar surface dust. Colaprete added that there was only water in the cloud of material lifted by the collision. "There are many things there," he said. The impact of the probe is observed by its sister spacecraft, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, as also with other space telescopes and from Earth.
