Traffic Noise in India Filmed in Bangalore on Tumkur Road which leads out of Bangalore towards Bombay - described by my rickshaw driver as 'Bombay Road' Traffic noise can cause serious and permanent hearing damage, interfere with communication, disturb sleep, cause cardiovascular and psycho-physiological effects and provoke annoyance responses and other changes in social behaviour. Noise can adversely affect performance, attentiveness, problem solving and memory. Impaired performance leads to a higher risk of accidents. Prolonged or excessive exposure to noise, whether in the community or at work, can cause permanent medical conditions, such as hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and inner ear damage causing deafness. "Hearing impairment can impose a heavy social and economic burden on individuals, families, communities and countries. Hearing impairment in children may delay development of language and cognitive skills, which may hinder progress in school. In adults, hearing impairment often makes it difficult to obtain, perform, and keep jobs.
