Help em out by referring a friend in the High Point NC area, or drop by the store yourself to meet Richard, Johnny, and the gang! To address any controversy around this video, watch our video response (or read the transcript below): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnH8eiSfyKg We knew this video was going to be controversial. Anytime race is discussed in any capacity, controversy ensues. The racial reconciliation concept was a joint effort between the Red House staff and us. They pointed out the fact that their employees and customer base were like the "Rainbow Coalition", and we thought something with a comical racial reconciliation theme would be fun, as well as a conversation starter. For those of you who think this video is racist, we'd like you to distinguish between "racist" and "racial". Racism is "hatred or intolerance of another race or other races." Racial is "of, relating to, or based on a race". This video is very obviously racial as opposed to racist. This video doesn't promote or feature hatred or intolerance. Rather, it's the very opposite. This commercial promotes inclusion and reconciliation, if not in a comical way. To point out the obvious, the irony in this video is that it's completely ridiculous for people to relate furniture to their race. People of all colors are welcome at the Red House, which is something that is taken for granted today, but there was a time in the not-so-distant past during which things as simple as a water fountain were NOT for everyone. If Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, or Dave Chappelle for that matter, were to address racial issues in a comical way (something that they all do VERY regularly), they would have pushed the envelope MUCH further. Discussing race in the US is taboo. It always makes people feel uncomfortable. We think it's a shame that someone saying "I'm white" or "I'm black" creates such a stir. There are real cultural identities within different people groups, and these things should be celebrated and embraced, not swept under the rug. This video is an attempt to use humor to spark a discussion about race issues, because we still have a long way to go. CIA Archives: The Cuban Revolution - Documentary History (1960) DVD: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UWNI0M/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=doc06-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B000UWNI0M http://thefilmarchive.org/ The Cuban Revolution was a successful armed revolt by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement, which overthrew the US-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista on 1 January 1959, after over five years of struggle. "Our revolution is endangering all American possessions in Latin America. We are telling these countries to make their own revolution." — Che Guevara, October 1962 Castro later travelled to the United States to explain his revolution. He said, "I know what the world thinks of us, we are Communists, and of course I have said very clearly that we are not Communists; very clearly." Hundreds of suspected Batista-era agents, policemen and soldiers were put on public trial for human rights abuses and war crimes, including murder and torture. Most of those convicted in revolutionary tribunals of political crimes were executed by firing squad, and the rest received long prison sentences. One of the most notorious examples of revolutionary justice was the execution of over 70 captured Batista regime soldiers, directed by Raúl Castro after the capture of Santiago. For his part in Havana, Che Guevara was appointed supreme prosecutor in La Cabaña Fortress. This was part of a large-scale attempt by Fidel Castro to cleanse the security forces of Batista loyalists and potential opponents of the new revolutionary regime. Others were fortunate enough to be dismissed from the army and police without prosecution, and some high-ranking officials in the ancien régime were exiled as military attachés. In 1961, after the US-backed Bay of Pigs Invasion, the new Cuban government nationalized all property held by religious organizations, including the dominant Roman Catholic Church. Hundreds of members of the church, including a bishop, were permanently expelled from the nation, with the new Cuban government being declared officially atheist. Faria describes how the education of children changed as Cuba officially became an atheist state: private schools were banned and the progressively socialist state assumed greater responsibility for children. According to geographer and Cuban Comandante Antonio Núñez Jiménez, 75% of Cuba's best arable land was owned by foreign individuals or foreign (mostly U.S.) companies. One of the first policies of the newly formed Cuban government was eliminating illiteracy and implementing land reforms. Land reform efforts helped to raise living standards by subdividing larger holdings into cooperatives. Comandante Sori Marin, nominally in charge of land reform, objected and fled, but was eventually executed. Many other non-Marxist, anti-Batista rebel leaders were forced in to exile, purged in executions, or eliminated in failed uprisings such as that of the Beaton brothers. Shortly after taking power, Castro also created a Revolutionary militia to expand his power base among the former rebels and the supportive population. Castro also initiated Committees for the Defense of the Revolution or CDRs in late September 1960. Government informants became rampant within the population. CDRs were tasked with keeping "vigilance against counter-revolutionary activity." Local CDRs were also tasked with keeping a detailed record of each neighborhood's inhabitants' spending habits, level of contact with foreigners, work and education history, and any "suspicious" behavior. One of the persecuted groups were homosexual men. The Cuban dissident and exile Reinaldo Arenas wrote about such persecution in his autobiography, "Antes Que Anochezca", the basis for the film Before Night Falls. In February 1959, the Ministry for the Recovery of Misappropriated Assets (Ministerio de Recuperación de Bienes Malversados) was created. Cuba began expropriating land and private property under the auspices of the Agrarian Reform Law of 17 May 1959. Cuban lawyer Mario Lazo writes that farms of any size could be and were seized by the government. Land, businesses, and companies owned by upper- and middle-class Cubans were also nationalized, including the plantations owned by Fidel Castro's family. By the end of 1960, the revolutionary government had nationalized more than $25 billion worth of private property owned by Cubans. Cuba also nationalized all foreign-owned property, particularly American holdings, in the nation on 6 August 1960. The United States, in turn, responded by freezing all Cuban assets in the United States, severing diplomatic ties, and tightening the embargo on Cuba, which is still in place as of 2011. In response to the acts of the Eisenhower administration, Cuba turned to the Soviet Union for support. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_Revolution Tags: 1895, 1959, 20th, america, ancient, bbc, biography, caribbean, castro, causes, century, civil, communist, cuba, cuban, cultural, culture, documentary, documentary part, durham, educational, europe, facts, fidel, heritage, historical, history, illusion, latin, menu, month, museum, optical, peasant, poverty, pre-revolutionary, project, relations, religion, revolution, roman, russia, salsa, society, states, summary, timeline, united, warfare, wiki, world war 1 Downloads - Last from: http://downthisvideo.com/ (Your Blog here!) |

Conga Lesson 1 - Tumbao - David "La Mole" Ortiz Conga Lesson - Basic 4/4 pattern for Salsa, Son, Cha Cha Cha, etc. - "Tumbao" or "La Marcha" with Conga Master David "La Mole" Ortiz. The basic "Tumbao" pattern is one of, if not the most common conga rhythm played for all types of music in 4/4. The tumbao was originally played with only one drum, the clave concept is maintained by replacing the tumba hits with bass tones on the conga. There are many variations of the basic tumbao, including playing the tumba on the 3-side of the clave(as demonstrated here). Pay close attention to hand position on the drum. The pattern is played on every 8th-beat in the measure in the following sequence: 2 Side of Clave 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & Count P T S T P T O O Tone L L R L L L R R Hand Used 3 Side of clave 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & Count P T S O O T O O Tone L L R R R L R R Hand Used Key: L: Left hand R: Right hand P: Palm of hand T: Tip of hand S: Slap O: Open Tone Note, The basic Salsa pattern is known as "Tumbao" but actually there are many tumbaos or patterns for each style of music, once you get an understanding of the general concept either you can play combining all the different tumbao variations within that particular style(see Giovanni Hidalgo) or If you repeat the same 2 or 4 bar phrase this is known as playing "In The Pocket" (see Eddie Montalvo). Theres also a way to create your own tumbaos but keeping the original concept, also known as "Creando"(see Papo Pepin), this depends on the musical setting and arrangements.. This happens in P.R. and N.Y.C. style Salsa music, for example during "Mambo" sections of music.. This is something very common in Cuban "Timba" and "Songo" music.. In this case there are possibly thousands of "tumbaos" or patterns.. In The Pocket'(mira Eddie Montalvo).
