Roma usaba con sus dominios una política muy hábil. Les cobraba los impuestos y se reservaba para sí ciertas supremas prerrogativas, pero trataba de no lastimar más de lo necesario el orgullo nacional, dejándoles el libre ejercicio de su religión, sus leyes y sus autoridades. El proceso contra Jesús era un asunto de carácter religioso, completamente ajeno al interés de Roma. Acusado de blasfemia, porque se dijo hijo de Dios, el Sanedrín, supremo tribunal religioso de los judíos, lo declaró reo de muerte. Pero la ejecución de la pena capital era una de aquellas prerrogativas que Roma se había reservado; por eso, para lograr su objeto, los Escribas y Fariseos hubieron de hacer comparecer a Jesús ante el tribunal del Gobernador Romano confesando humildemente: "A nosotros no nos es lícito ejecutar a nadie"(1). A un pagano escéptico, como Poncio Pilato, representante de un imperio político en cuyo Olimpo cabían cómodamente todos los dioses imaginables, no le podía alarmar gran cosa el que un judío se declarara "hijo de Dios"; de aquí que los enemigos de Jesús cambiaran de táctica, y, convirtiendo el proceso religioso en un proceso político, lo acusaron ante Poncio Pilato de agitador del pueblo y de perturbador de la tranquilidad pública (2). Tampoco ésto convencía mucho al Gobernador Romano, que se inclinaba evidentemente por la inocencia del presunto reo; por lo cual, los Escribas y Fariseos echaron mano a una acusación suprema, bien que ella les significara la confesión más humillante para su orgullo nacional: "Nosotros -gritaron aquel día a voz en cuello- no tenemos otro Rey más que el César. Este dice que es Rey, y todo el que se hace Rey se declara contra el César; por eso, si sueltas a éste, no eres amigo del César" (3). El habilísimo golpe surtió se inmediato el buscado efecto. Ante esta acusación y esta amenaza, tembló Pilato. Es cierto que, momentos antes, Jesús le había explicado: "Yo soy Rey, tú lo has dicho; pero mi reino no es de este mundo. Yo para eso nací, para dar testimonio de la verdad; por eso, todo el que pertenece a la verdad, escucha mi voz" (4). Pero, de todas maneras, algo había en aquella extraña realeza que no podía agradar al César, y Pilato cedió, entregando a Jesús para que fuera crucificado. Dos poderes absolutos se hallan frente a frente: el Divino de Cristo Jesús, que consiste en el dominio supremo de la verdad y en la suprema reyecía de los principios eternos, por los que debe regirse la vida privada y pública de los hombres y de los pueblos, y el humano del César, dominador de individuos y de pueblos, a quien están sometidos todos los intereses de la tierra. Verdaderamente Jesús no quiere ser competidor del César: "su reino no es de este mundo". Pero el César lo convierte en su rival y en su enemigo, desde que proclama, tácita y explícitamente, su poder totalitario, invadiendo los dominios de la Ley de Dios y la libertad de la conciencia humana. Esta es la verdadera razón de la condenación a muerte de Jesucristo. Es la reacción satánica de los poderes del mundo, que se resisten a atacar la divina realeza de Cristo, por considerar que ésta los limita y los coarta en su omnímoda expansión. Y esta es también la razón por la que Cristo consiente en su condenación a muerte. El es el Rey universal de todas las criaturas, "no por la fuerza ni por ninguna otra razón, sino por su misma esencia y naturaleza", según se expresa San Cirilo de Alejandría, es decir, por la unión hipostática; pero también quiso serlo en especial de los hombres, por derecho de conquista. "Habeis sido redimidos, no con oro y plata corruptibles, sino con la preciosa sangre de Cristo" (5), nos recuerda San Pedro en su primera Epístola; y San Pablo, en su primera Carta a los Corintios, saca como consecuencia: "No somos, pues, ya nuestros, puesto que Cristo nos ha comprado con el más alto precio" (6). Toda la vida de los hombres, privada y pública, los individuos y la sociedad, están incluídos en esa gloriosa conquista, de tal manera que "no hay salvación en algún otro, ni ha sido dado debajo del cielo a los hombres otro nombre en el cual podamos ser salvos" (7). Esta es la tesis del sublime drama que se desarrolló en el Pretorio de Pilato, y cuyo desenlace trágico fué el Camino de la Cruz.
