Durante los ocho meses posteriores a la explosión de la central nuclear, 800.000 jóvenes soldados, mineros, bomberos y civiles procedentes de todas las regiones de la antigua Unión Soviética, trabajaron sin descanso para intentar mitigar los efectos de la radioactividad, construir un sarcófago alrededor del reactor accidentado y en definitiva, salvar al mundo de otra probable tragedia. Todos ellos estaban guiados por el temor a una peligrosa reacción en cadena derivada de la explosión inicial, cien veces superior a los efectos de la bomba de Hiroshima. Recordado como el peor accidente industrial y medioambiental de la historia, la explosión de Chernobyl produjo una lluvia radioactiva que pudo ser detectada en la antigua Unión Soviética, Europa Oriental, Escandinavia, Inglaterra e incluso el este de los Estados Unidos. Grandes áreas de Ucrania, Bielorrusia y la actual Rusia fueron altamente contaminadas. Como resultado de ello, 200.000 personas tuvieron que ser evacuadas de sus lugares de origen.
