Legend has it that these particular Siddis are descended from Mozambican and Ethiopian slaves, brought to India by the Portugese. During the 'Goan Inquisition' they were either freed or escaped from their Portugese rulers ships. This uniquely Afro-Indian community is spread along the Gujarat-Karnataka belt to the west of India. The Siddis still retain some cultural traits of their African roots. Their music is heavily percussive and is influenced by a wide array of cultures, religions and regions. Yet, at the core of everything, they are Indian, speaking its languages, influencing it culture and adding a fresh perspective to the idea of a multicultural society within this country. [View \| Download]	Maya Pedal Asociación, San Andrés Itzapa, Guatemala In 1997, in San Andrés Itzapa in Guatemala, Maya Pedal Association began recycling scraps of bicycles into Bicimáquinas. Bicimáquinas are pedal-powered blenders, washing machines and threshing machines, eliminating the need for fuel and electricity. Pumps are also possible, and are capable of extracting 30 liters of water per minute from 30-meter deep wells (electronic pumps reach just to 12 meters). The idea of these ingenious contraptions emerged from the desire to help the farming families of the San Andrés community. The issue that gave rise to Maya Pedal was the expense and shortage of electricity and fuel in the village. Carlos and Cesar, creators of Maya Pedal, have achieved an extraordinary result: a worthy project that does not pollute and is extremely fascinating in its involvement of volunteers from around the world who are building a fantastic pedal revolution. He is famously known as the designer of Aceh's tsunami museum and Rasuna Epicentrum (Jakarta). His house was made from 30,000 used Red Bull bottles. He talks about the importance of innovation, creativity and collaboration among the many and diverse creative communities in Indonesia. He also stresses the importance of the design of cities, where the increasing majority of mankind lives.
