It's one of those songs I can't touch without putting way too many throws tricks in, haha. By far the most air I've ever gotten out of a throw, you might even see the disbelief on my face as i catch it :) I've read places where people have labelled this song as anti-Christian, referring to the lyrics "To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah: This is war". Most of you guys know what I believe and what my convictions are, so I would never do a song if I believed the message to be anti-Christian, or pretty much anti any religion. The way I interpret the song (and that specific line) is a warning to anybody reducing the relationship we can have with God to just another religion, a warning to the false prophets, hypocrites: that THIS IS WAR. And that's something I can wholeheartedly agree with. Just as a sidenote (for the audio engineers and mixer who might be wondering) NO replacement or triggering was done in this mix. Every single stroke you hear was just eq'd, mixed, and compressed; I didn't layer or trigger or replace anything. I had only been playing doublebass for a few months at the time of this recordig, so please be lenient with he comments about that ;) For the record, ALL double strokes were played with one pedal, ie the ones at the end of the gutiar solo, as you can very clearly see by how crazily tired I was after that piece :) I would hve LOVED to show you the FootCam of this, but I forgot to rewind the tape for the whole third set, so with a few songs I unfortunately couln't use the FootCam shots. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Even though I have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself. I find that the covers people respond to most are the most sincere and passionate ones, regardless of any other external factors. I absolutely LOVE this song, and apart from the very "new-age" message, This Is War is a melodically monstrous album. Increeeedibly fun and expressive songs to play along to. An interesting note.. we reskinned the kit right before we started recording, so the skins naturally went out of tune a little, and we had to keep an eye (ear?) on them. The snare, on the other hand, completely went out of tune towards the end of No More Sorrow (which was recorded right before this) and we only noticed it at the end of the recording of Vox Populi. This was a huge problem since I was too tired to try and "replicate" my first REAL performance, but since I've mixed MUCHHH worse recorded audio, I was brave enough to give it a go :) That's why this snare tone is completely different than the rest of the series, much less tone and resonance and MUCH more attack. RECORDING I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both separate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such, to have it fit in with the original music track. It's one of those songs I can't touch without putting way too many throws tricks in, haha. By far the most air I've ever gotten out of a throw, you might even see the disbelief on my face as i catch it :) I've read places where people have labelled this song as anti-Christian, referring to the lyrics "To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah: This is war". Most of you guys know what I believe and what my convictions are, so I would never do a song if I believed the message to be anti-Christian, or pretty much anti any religion. The way I interpret the song (and that specific line) is a warning to anybody reducing the relationship we can have with God to just another religion, a warning to the false prophets, hypocrites: that THIS IS WAR. And that's something I can wholeheartedly agree with. Just as a sidenote (for the audio engineers and mixer who might be wondering) NO replacement or triggering was done in this mix. Every single stroke you hear was just eq'd, mixed, and compressed; I didn't layer or trigger or replace anything. I had only been playing doublebass for a few months at the time of this recordig, so please be lenient with he comments about that ;) For the record, ALL double strokes were played with one pedal, ie the ones at the end of the gutiar solo, as you can very clearly see by how crazily tired I was after that piece :) I would hve LOVED to show you the FootCam of this, but I forgot to rewind the tape for the whole third set, so with a few songs I unfortunately couln't use the FootCam shots. I find that the covers people respond to most are the most sincere and passionate ones, regardless of any other external factors. I absolutely LOVE this song, and apart from the very "new-age" message, This Is War is a melodically monstrous album. Increeeedibly fun and expressive songs to play along to. An interesting note.. we reskinned the kit right before we started recording, so the skins naturally went out of tune a little, and we had to keep an eye (ear?) on them. The snare, on the other hand, completely went out of tune towards the end of No More Sorrow (which was recorded right before this) and we only noticed it at the end of the recording of Vox Populi. This was a huge problem since I was too tired to try and "replicate" my first REAL performance, but since I've mixed MUCHHH worse recorded audio, I was brave enough to give it a go :) That's why this snare tone is completely different than the rest of the series, much less tone and resonance and MUCH more attack. Again. As much of you know, I have done this song before.. Not being totally satisfied with the outcome, I uploaded it anyway. The day after it took the "most viewed video" spot, I took it down, as I felt it was a very misleading example of my style, since it was so grossly and unaccurately overplayed. So, this is attempt #2. Still not ttally satisfied ;) ..but better. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Even though I have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. RECORDING I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both separate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such, to have it fit in with the original music track.
