NO drum replacement or triggering was done in this series, what you hear is just a mixed version of a 100% acoustically produced track. ______________________________ Whattt an epic song! Sheesh. I find that the covers people respond to most are the most sincere and passionate ones, regardless of any other external factors. I absolutely LOVE this song, and apart from the very "new-age" message, This Is War is a melodically monstrous album. Increeeedibly fun and expressive songs to play along to. An interesting note.. we reskinned the kit right before we started recording, so the skins naturally went out of tune a little, and we had to keep an eye (ear?) on them. The snare, on the other hand, completely went out of tune towards the end of No More Sorrow (which was recorded right before this) and we only noticed it at the end of the recording of Vox Populi. This was a huge problem since I was too tired to try and "replicate" my first REAL performance, but since I've mixed MUCHHH worse recorded audio, I was brave enough to give it a go :) That's why this snare tone is completely different than the rest of the series, much less tone and resonance and MUCH more attack. (whoa, now that's one complicated sentence) Crazy amounts of fun, this one. Loved the groovy parts in the intro and outtro, aswell as the heavy stuff in the middle. Obviously the last few choruses were also quite nice to do :) (As for the outtro doublebass crossovers; it's the only part of the song that was written beforehand, the rest is all improvised on the spot, to keep things fresh and unpredictable.) I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song i play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what i play is improvised. Even though i have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself. I edited this song so that it's 10% faster than the original album version.. makes things more interesting :) This is technically not at all accurate, but that wasn't the intention of the 'cover'. This is not so much a drum cover as a my personal rendition of the song :) This is pretty much a rock/funk cover of a VERY "pop" song, which made things really interesting.. i have to say i'm quite pleased with the outcome. NSYNC - Pop from the 2001 release Celebrity is the copyrigthed property of its owner. (This is a mix 10% faster than the original album version.) (External) Drums by Cobus Potgieter TECHNICAL INFO* (with my last cover series, the Overhead Series, i got an insane amount of questions about my set-up.. so here's an in detail description of how i made these covers..) Drumkit: Tama Superstar Custom; in the Blue Metallic Fade Heads: Toms TOP: Remo Powerstroke 3, Clear. Toms BOTTOM: stock heads. Snare TOP: Remo Emperor, Coated. Snare BOTTOM: stock head. Bassdrum BATTER: Remo Powerstroke 4, Clear. Cymbals: Paiste PST 5 UNIVERSAL setup: 14" Hats 16" Crash 20" Ride Secondary Ride: Zildjian Planet Z (very muted, tightly screwed down) Secondary Crash: Paiste 502 16" Crash RECORDING I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both seperate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such. Freakin immense, this was such such such a rad experience. I'm not really one for gimmicks and tricks and "marketing" to get views or generate views just for the sake of views. I sometimes spin the sticks and throw them in the air because that's exactly what I do when I'm playing drums by myself in my room :) Recording a drum cover OUTSIDE on the side of a freakin Canadian Mountain was an incredible experience and I got to do it because I'm in Canada busy launching the Cobus Method product, but the main reason WHY we put so much effort into just this one cover was just to give you guys an enormous thank you for making all of this possible. It's one of those songs I can't touch without putting way too many throws tricks in, haha. By far the most air I've ever gotten out of a throw, you might even see the disbelief on my face as i catch it :) I've read places where people have labelled this song as anti-Christian, referring to the lyrics "To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah: This is war". Most of you guys know what I believe and what my convictions are, so I would never do a song if I believed the message to be anti-Christian, or pretty much anti any religion. The way I interpret the song (and that specific line) is a warning to anybody reducing the relationship we can have with God to just another religion, a warning to the false prophets, hypocrites: that THIS IS WAR. And that's something I can wholeheartedly agree with. Just as a sidenote (for the audio engineers and mixer who might be wondering) NO replacement or triggering was done in this mix. Every single stroke you hear was just eq'd, mixed, and compressed; I didn't layer or trigger or replace anything. [HP200B] RECORDING [Two Panasonic NVGS250 3CCD Cameras] I miced each individual drum, plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both seperate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such. I find that the covers people respond to most are the most sincere and passionate ones, regardless of any other external factors. I absolutely LOVE this song, and apart from the very "new-age" message, This Is War is a melodically monstrous album. Increeeedibly fun and expressive songs to play along to. An interesting note.. we reskinned the kit right before we started recording, so the skins naturally went out of tune a little, and we had to keep an eye (ear?) on them. The snare, on the other hand, completely went out of tune towards the end of No More Sorrow (which was recorded right before this) and we only noticed it at the end of the recording of Vox Populi. This was a huge problem since I was too tired to try and "replicate" my first REAL performance, but since I've mixed MUCHHH worse recorded audio, I was brave enough to give it a go :) That's why this snare tone is completely different than the rest of the series, much less tone and resonance and MUCH more attack. I have been on YouTube long enough to know that many comments will negatively mention that this isn't just a drum cover, that the drumming isn't impressive enough, that I look like a convict with shorter hair.. but I've learnt that what is true is relevant, and what is speculated is not :) I'll always keep doing drum covers, some will be over the top, fun and entertaining.. and some will be more held back and expressive. I'm growing up, so is my musical approach, and so is my need to be less self-indulgent and more creatively expressive. Collaborations fit that mold perfectly, I want to do more.. I want to create more. I understand many people won't understand that, but I'm sure most will, and either way.. it's totally ok. Nobody's opinion (good or bad!) can or should ever determine what is expressed and what is created and what is art. I edited this song so that it's 10% faster than the original album version.. makes things more interesting :) This is technically not at all accurate, but that wasn't the intention of the 'cover'. This is not so much a drum cover as a my personal rendition of the song :) This is pretty much a rock/funk cover of a VERY "pop" song, which made things really interesting.. i have to say i'm quite pleased with the outcome. NSYNC - Pop from the 2001 release Celebrity is the copyrigthed property of its owner. (This is a mix 10% faster than the original album version.) (External) Drums by Cobus Potgieter TECHNICAL INFO* (with my last cover series, the Overhead Series, i got an insane amount of questions about my set-up.. so here's an in detail description of how i made these covers..) Drumkit: Tama Superstar Custom; in the Blue Metallic Fade Heads: Toms TOP: Remo Powerstroke 3, Clear. Toms BOTTOM: stock heads. Snare TOP: Remo Emperor, Coated. Snare BOTTOM: stock head. Bassdrum BATTER: Remo Powerstroke 4, Clear. Cymbals: Paiste PST 5 UNIVERSAL setup: 14" Hats 16" Crash 20" Ride Secondary Ride: Zildjian Planet Z (very muted, tightly screwed down) Secondary Crash: Paiste 502 16" Crash RECORDING I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both seperate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such. It's one of those songs I can't touch without putting way too many throws tricks in, haha. By far the most air I've ever gotten out of a throw, you might even see the disbelief on my face as i catch it :) I've read places where people have labelled this song as anti-Christian, referring to the lyrics "To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah: This is war". Most of you guys know what I believe and what my convictions are, so I would never do a song if I believed the message to be anti-Christian, or pretty much anti any religion. The way I interpret the song (and that specific line) is a warning to anybody reducing the relationship we can have with God to just another religion, a warning to the false prophets, hypocrites: that THIS IS WAR. And that's something I can wholeheartedly agree with. Just as a sidenote (for the audio engineers and mixer who might be wondering) NO replacement or triggering was done in this mix. I had only been playing doublebass for a few months at the time of this recordig, so please be lenient with he comments about that ;) For the record, ALL double strokes were played with one pedal, ie the ones at the end of the gutiar solo, as you can very clearly see by how crazily tired I was after that piece :) I would hve LOVED to show you the FootCam of this, but I forgot to rewind the tape for the whole third set, so with a few songs I unfortunately couln't use the FootCam shots. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Even though I have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. As with the Planetshakers song, I was really scared of doing a praise+worship song as a "cover" since I find it pretty darn weird jamming and improvising (and especially "entertaining"..) with a song intended to give glory to God. A lot of people have been asking about a few p+w songs, so I decided the only way I could record it was if I in fact really DID praise and worship God while playing this, so I got really into it :) Because of that, this is a really personal performance, and so i'm a bit scared of uploading it because of it being a lot more personal than just another song. Laus Deo Semper. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Even though I have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself. Cymbals: Paiste PST 5 UNIVERSAL setup: 14" Hats 16" Crash 20" Ride Secondary Crash: Sabian XS20 Medium-Thin 16" Crash (please note the toms are tuned and equalized for RECORDING purposes, live they need to be tuned a lot more "open" to sound as good as in the recording. and yes, the kit DOES sound that good live :) i had almost NO equalising on the drums themselves, and ONLY removed some low frequencies from the overheads. basically i only levelled the mix and applied compression.) RECORDING I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both separate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such, to have it fit in with the original music track. The reason I don't overlay the FootCam as much anymore, is because it feels like people have seen it, and you know how I do it.. so it doesn't make sense to keep showing it :) We recorded this song almost at the very end of the session, mostly because I was scared of it..
