Intégré en même temps que le duché au royaume de France en 1204, le pays de Caux est particulièrement frappé par les effets de la Guerre de Cent Ans et des guerres de religion, les Cauchois comme les autres Normands sétant convertis au protestantisme en grand nombre. Au XXe siècle, après le débarquement allié en Normandie, un bombardement massif ravage la ville du Havre en septembre 1944. Le Pays de Caux est une région dynamique grâce à une industrie chimique puissante, une agriculture compétitive et lensemble portuaire havrais. La proximité de Paris, une forte identité, la présence de nombreux châteaux et manoirs, dune architecture rurale particulière (clos-masures, colombiers) font de la région une destination touristiquement attractive. Les habitants du pays de Caux sont appelés Cauchois ; le cauchois étant un dialecte important de la langue normande. Les villes principales sont Le Havre, Étretat, Fécamp, Saint-Valéry-en-Caux et Dieppe sur le littoral, Bolbec et Yvetot à lintérieur des terres Le Pays de Caux se distingue du reste de la Normandie par ses caractéristiques géographiques et géologiques. Ces paysages, uniques en France, ont été façonnés par leau et les activités humaines. Le Pays de Caux forme grossièrement un triangle à louest du département de la Seine-Maritime, en Haute-Normandie. Il est bordé au nord et à louest par la Manche. Mais à lest, les limites sont plus floues et dépendent des auteurs. On admet généralement que le Pays de Caux se termine à louest de la forêt d'Eawy et de la forêt Verte ou sur linterfluve entre la Varenne et la Scie[1]. La boutonnière du Pays de Bray, par ses altitudes plus élevées et par la nature de ses terrains se différencie nettement du Pays de Caux[2]. On désigne par lexpression « Petit Caux », la région littorale située entre Dieppe et le Tréport. La ville la plus au nord est Dieppe ( 49°92′22″N 1°07′86″E / 50.53944, 1.14056) ; lextrémité sud-ouest est occupée par lagglomération havraise ( 49°49′0″N 0°10′00″E / 49.81667, 0.166667). Ces deux cités sont des sous-préfectures. Enfin, la vallée de la Seine marque la limite méridionale du Pays de Caux. Les hautes falaises de craie, qui constituent lessentiel du littoral, et la Seine ont, par le passé, représenté des obstacles naturels aux transports et aux communications, si bien que le territoire cauchois est longtemps resté relativement enclavé (voir le paragraphe sur les transports Cest au cours de lère primaire que le socle du Pays de Caux sest constitué, à la suite du rapprochement des blocs ardennais et armoricain[6]. Le socle résulte de la déformation, puis de lérosion de la montagne née de cette collision. Des forages effectués dans le secteur dÉtretat-Fécamp-Lillebonne ont montré la présence de sable du primaire sous les couches de lère secondaire[7]. Dautres sondages profonds ont mis en évidence des gneiss et des roches schisteuses très déformées[8]. Le socle primaire a été ensuite submergé par la mer au Jurassique et au Crétacé. Le niveau de cette mer chaude a fortement évolué au cours de cette période, ce qui a donné lieu à la formation de couches dargiles, de marnes, puis de craie. Lanalyse de ces couches révèle la présence de fossiles dammonites, doursins ainsi que des dents de requins[9]. Pendant plusieurs millions dannées, les strates se sont empilées pour constituer au total 500 à 1 000 mètres de terrains sédimentaires, dont plus de 200 mètres de craie, divisés par les géologues en plusieurs étages (cénomanien, turonien, coniacien, santonien, campanien)[10]. Le nom du Pays de Caux provient dune tribu celte, les Calètes, qui occupe le territoire avant la présence romaine. Il est conquis en 56 av. J.-C. par les légions de Jules César avant dêtre intégré à la Lyonnaise par lempereur Auguste. À la chute de Rome au Ve siècle, les peuplades franques qui sy installent encouragent le développement du monachisme abbaye de Saint-Wandrille (649), de Jumièges, de Fécamp (709) et substituent le pagus à la civitas avant son intégration à lEmpire carolingien. À partir de la fin du VIIIe siècle, des pillards vikings dévastent la région, puis sy implantent en fondant le duché de Normandie en 911. Intégré en même temps que le duché au royaume de France en 1204, le pays de Caux est particulièrement frappé par les effets de la Guerre de Cent Ans et des guerres de religion, les Cauchois comme les autres Normands sétant convertis au protestantisme en grand nombre. Au XXe siècle, après le débarquement allié en Normandie, un bombardement massif ravage la ville du Havre en septembre 1944. Le Pays de Caux est une région dynamique grâce à une industrie chimique puissante, une agriculture compétitive et lensemble portuaire havrais. La proximité de Paris, une forte identité, la présence de nombreux châteaux et manoirs, dune architecture rurale particulière (clos-masures, colombiers) font de la région une destination touristiquement attractive. Les habitants du pays de Caux sont appelés Cauchois ; le cauchois étant un dialecte important de la langue normande. Les villes principales sont Le Havre, Étretat, Fécamp, Saint-Valéry-en-Caux et Dieppe sur le littoral, Bolbec et Yvetot à lintérieur des terres Le Pays de Caux se distingue du reste de la Normandie par ses caractéristiques géographiques et géologiques. Ces paysages, uniques en France, ont été façonnés par leau et les activités humaines. Le Pays de Caux forme grossièrement un triangle à louest du département de la Seine-Maritime, en Haute-Normandie. Il est bordé au nord et à louest par la Manche. Mais à lest, les limites sont plus floues et dépendent des auteurs. On admet généralement que le Pays de Caux se termine à louest de la forêt d'Eawy et de la forêt Verte ou sur linterfluve entre la Varenne et la Scie[1]. La boutonnière du Pays de Bray, par ses altitudes plus élevées et par la nature de ses terrains se différencie nettement du Pays de Caux[2]. On désigne par lexpression « Petit Caux », la région littorale située entre Dieppe et le Tréport. La ville la plus au nord est Dieppe ( 49°92′22″N 1°07′86″E / 50.53944, 1.14056) ; lextrémité sud-ouest est occupée par lagglomération havraise ( 49°49′0″N 0°10′00″E / 49.81667, 0.166667). Ces deux cités sont des sous-préfectures. Enfin, la vallée de la Seine marque la limite méridionale du Pays de Caux. Les hautes falaises de craie, qui constituent lessentiel du littoral, et la Seine ont, par le passé, représenté des obstacles naturels aux transports et aux communications, si bien que le territoire cauchois est longtemps resté relativement enclavé (voir le paragraphe sur les transports Cest au cours de lère primaire que le socle du Pays de Caux sest constitué, à la suite du rapprochement des blocs ardennais et armoricain[6]. Le socle résulte de la déformation, puis de lérosion de la montagne née de cette collision. Des forages effectués dans le secteur dÉtretat-Fécamp-Lillebonne ont montré la présence de sable du primaire sous les couches de lère secondaire[7]. Dautres sondages profonds ont mis en évidence des gneiss et des roches schisteuses très déformées[8]. Le socle primaire a été ensuite submergé par la mer au Jurassique et au Crétacé. Le niveau de cette mer chaude a fortement évolué au cours de cette période, ce qui a donné lieu à la formation de couches dargiles, de marnes, puis de craie. Lanalyse de ces couches révèle la présence de fossiles dammonites, doursins ainsi que des dents de requins[9]. Pendant plusieurs millions dannées, les strates se sont empilées pour constituer au total 500 à 1 000 mètres de terrains sédimentaires, dont plus de 200 mètres de craie, divisés par les géologues en plusieurs étages (cénomanien, turonien, coniacien, santonien, campanien)[10].
