This song is dedicated to the children of war and all the soldiers who want to stay home, but especially to a young, black American soldier we know who refused to go back to the Middle East after his tour of duty was finished and he received orders to return to the front lines 90 days later. He was devastated at what he had to do, but more so, shocked at the needless amount of civilian deaths. He refused to participate in the possible killing of women, children, the old and the unarmed who are often huddling in the middle. He sits in the brig as you read this, court marshaled and dishonorably discharged when he said he would kill no more, and he is not alone. For this, we salute you. On the morning after this video was made and uploaded, I awoke to the spirit of this child standing by my bed. I recognized him right away because of the sleeveless plaid shirt, only this time I was looking at the left side of his body as he was trying to hide the gun so I would not see it. He was smiling, his hands by his side. It scared me for a second or two, but I have seen ghosts before, so I called out to him "wait" as he faded away. Apr 19, 2008 QUEBEC — A researcher at a Quebec university has found a dramatic spike in the number of military suicides in 2007, the CBC reported Friday. It quoted Maj. Michael Sartori, a doctoral student at the Universite de Laval, as saying that 36 soldiers killed themselves in 2007, compared with a yearly average of 12 to 17 from 1994 to 2005. Sartori said most of the data was compiled from Canadian Forces military police reports. The rate would put military suicides at three times the general population, the CBC said. But a spokesperson for the Department of National Defence said late Friday that suicide rates among CF personnel were lower than those among the general population. ``Suicide rates in the CF are decreasing. The rate of suicide among male CF personnel during the period 2005-2007 was lower than the rate during the period 2000-2004,'' Lt.-Col. Jamie Robertson said in an e-mail to The Canadian Press. He said statistical comparisons since 2004 were not possible as Statistics Canada had not yet made information on Canadian mortality rates available for this period. ``From 2000 to 2004, the rate of suicide among Canadian males approximated 25 per 100,000, or one in 4,000. Over the same period, the rate of suicide among male CF personnel approximated 19.1 per 100,000, or one in 5,236. This means that the rate of suicide among male CF personnel between 2000 and 2004 was about 75 per cent of the rate among Canadian males, once the two have been age-standardized,'' Robertson said. The rate of suicide among male CF personnel in 2005-2007 was 16.1 per 100,000, or one in 6,211, he added. The CBC report said previous reports showed the number of Canadian soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder had skyrocketed to 6,500. About 28 per cent of the 2,700 soldiers who were screened in 2007 after serving in Afghanistan were found to have symptoms of mental-health problems, it said. However, Robertson said, ``Statistical analysis permits the conclusion that there is no consistent relationship between a history of deployment and increased risk of suicide.''
