Allen Iverson 44pts 10 Assists vs Seattle Sonics 06/07
By pennyccw

Iverson, Nuggets Defeat Sonics; Karl Notches 800th Win

George Karl couldn't have drawn up his 800th win any better - playing short-handed, making up plays on the fly in timeouts, inclement weather outside.
This was his kind of game. That's why the Nuggets coach was all smiles after getting his milestone victory in Denver's 112-98 win over the Seattle SuperSonics - his former team - on Thursday night.
Karl was handed a Denver jersey with No. 800 on it along with the game ball after beating the Sonics to become only the 12th coach in NBA history to reach the 800-win mark.
"Tonight's game was fun because I thought from the minute they went on the court they thought they were going to win the game,'' said Karl, who's 800-555 in 19 seasons. "Coach (Dean) Smith told me a long time ago that if you can't accept that players win and coaches lose, then don't get into coaching. You can be the greatest coach in the world, but if you don't have players, you aren't going to win in the NBA.''
Karl has a superstar in Allen Iverson, who finished with 44 points and 10 assists. Iverson had his highest-scoring game since being acquired by Denver in a trade with Philadelphia on Dec. 19. His season high is 46 against Chicago on Nov. 24.
"He's good,'' Karl said. "He's better than I thought and I thought he was (darn) good.''
After coming out of the lineup with 1:04 remaining, Iverson and Karl had a brief conversation and then a quick hug.
"To be a part of something like that is something to cherish,'' Iverson said. "It was an honor to help him get that win.''
Nothing the Sonics did worked against Iverson. He's now scored 40 or more points in 77 career games, which ties Oscar Robertson for fourth in NBA history.
"He was something,'' Seattle coach Bob Hill said.
Karl doesn't take any added satisfaction that the win came against a Seattle team that ran him off after the 1997-98 season. Karl said he no longer has any bitterness toward the franchise he helped lead to the NBA finals in 1996.
"This win against Seattle is special because Seattle was a big part of my career,'' Karl said.
He even improvised a couple of times during the game, making up plays and watching them work to perfection.
"This team just thinks it's going to win even being undermanned,'' he said.
Karl's first win was Nov. 15, 1984, against Atlanta when he was coaching Cleveland. He'd started the season 0-9 and never thought he'd reach this type of accomplishment.
"When I first started, I thought 250 (games) would be great,'' he said. "I thought 250 and you'd retire into a college job and coach into the sunset.''
Earl Boykins added 24 points, and Reggie Evans had a season-high 18 rebounds for the Nuggets.
Damien Wilkins matched his career high with 26 points, and Luke Ridnour finished with 16 points for the Sonics.
"We just wanted to get out of here tonight,'' Wilkins said.
Both teams did. Another major snowstorm blanketed Denver on Thursday and the Nuggets and Sonics both made dashes for the airport after the game to get out of town for their road games Friday night. The Nuggets will play in Oklahoma City, and Seattle will travel to Minnesota.
Seattle star Ray Allen didn't make the trip to Denver after his fiancee gave birth to a boy Wednesday, but may rejoin the team Friday night in Minnesota. Allen has been bothered by a right ankle injury that's kept him out of three of the last five games.
Denver's Marcus Camby missed his third straight game with a fractured right finger on his shooting hand. With Nene out as well with a right knee injury, the Nuggets gave Jamal Sampson his third career start. He finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
Denver used its fourth different lineup in four games since Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith were suspended for their roles in a brawl against the New York Knicks on Dec. 16. Denver is 3-1 without Anthony and Smith.
"There's not a whole bunch of pressure,'' Iverson said of being short-handed. "I just feel like all of us are going to have to do it together. It's going to be a team effort.''

Allen Iverson 44pts 15asts vs Steve Nash Phoenix Suns 06/07
By pennyccw

Iverson dishes 15 assists on top of 44 points in one-sided affair

Allen Iverson feels right at home just in time for the Denver Nuggets' big road trip.

Iverson scored 44 points and dished out 15 assists in leading the Nuggets to their fourth straight win, a 131-107 blowout of the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.

Carmelo Anthony augmented Iverson's night by adding 29 points in the duo's best performance since the holiday trade that brought them together three months ago.

Now, the surging Nuggets hit the road for five straight games and eight of their next nine.

"This does a lot for our confidence," Iverson said. "To win four games in a row, you get a certain swagger about your game."

The Nuggets have quite the saunter thanks to their red-hot superstars.

Iverson made 16-of-22 shots from the field and Anthony was 13-for-20. And many of the shots were alley-oop dunks and rim-rattling jams that were the product of the Nuggets' suddenly stingy defense.

"They made every shot in the world," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "They are hard to handle when Anthony and Iverson are coming at you like that. They are hard to handle on any night."

At one point, both Iverson and Anthony were 12-for-16 from the floor.

"When you're in a zone, it doesn't matter if guys are on you or anything," Iverson said. "It just feels good. It just feels like throwing rocks in an ocean."

The Suns have lost twice -- by a combined 46 points -- since their 129-127 double-overtime win at Dallas on Wednesday night. They lost to Detroit 105-83 Friday night, which D'Antoni blamed on emotional exhaustion.

"We're still feeling it," Steve Nash said. "It was a big win. We have to get back to the way we were before that game."

The Suns, who got 25 points from Leandro Barbosa, never led in this one and fell behind by 38 points entering the fourth quarter against a team that they might face in the first round of the playoffs next month.

"We didn't have any energy," Nash said. "They played with a lot of heart and energy and we weren't. So I didn't see any way we were going to get back into the game."

Anthony had 19 points by halftime and Iverson had 13 points and 10 assists at the break as the Nuggets took a 70-44 lead into the locker room. Iverson's drive to the basket made it 111-73 heading into the fourth quarter.

"That's another confidence booster for us," Anthony said. "To beat a team like that. You know one of the top teams, if not the top team. To beat a team like that is really a great deal for us. So we can take that momentum from this game and from the previous three games and take it on the road with us."

The Suns had won 24 of 28 road games and had gone 9-1 against Denver in their past 10 meetings. They trailed 37-25 after one quarter and it only got worse from there in what was easily the Nuggets' best game of the season.

The Nuggets shot 68 percent in the first half and the Suns shot just 33 percent.

"They played great," D'Antoni said. "We're in a little bit of a funk right now. Discombobulated. We have the regroup a little bit."

Denver has struggled all season to get any cohesion because of injuries, illnesses, trades and suspensions. The Nuggets have started to put it together lately, and this was the night it finally all came together for them.

Anthony drew the foul and some of the loudest cheers of the night when his third attempt at a putback resulted in the whistle, and his two free throws made it 109-73 in the waning seconds of the third quarter.

Iverson said the Nuggets knew they'd have to start quickly and play relentless defense.

"That team can blow you out and they can score in bunches," he said.

For once, it was the opposition that did both.

Allen Iverson 46pts vs Chris Webber Kings MVP 00/01 NBA
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson was healthy enough to dazzle the Sacramento Kings and push the Philadelphia 76ers to the top of the NBA.

Iverson scored 46 points with a whirling array of beautiful shots, and Aaron McKie, who had a triple-double, hit a 3-pointer to break a tie with 39 seconds left in overtime as the 76ers earned the NBA's best record with a 107-104 victory over the Kings on Saturday.

The game matched the teams with the NBA's best records entering January, but the 76ers (21-8) jumped ahead early with a blistering first quarter and never trailed the Kings (20-8) despite several nip-and-tuck minutes in regulation and a tense overtime.

Iverson, who also had nine rebounds and nine assists, drove the lane and passed to McKie in the corner for the go-ahead shot. Sacramento couldn't score on its last two possessions, and Jon Barry's 3-pointer with a second left was short.

With Iverson's artistry and a dominant rebounding performance, the Sixers won their NBA-best 14th road game and snapped Sacramento's nine-game home winning streak. McKie had 19 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds in Philadelphia's first win at Arco Arena in 11 years.

Iverson missed a game last week with a dislocated right shoulder and also is nursing a left hip pointer and a sore right elbow. But the 1999 NBA scoring champion used the nationally televised meeting of the NBA's conference leaders to show he's healthy and ready to make the Sixers better than they've ever been in his career.

Peja Stojakovic scored a career-high 33 points for the Kings, and he hit four straight free throws in overtime which tied it at 104 with 54 seconds left. Sacramento is 13-2 at home, with both losses coming in overtime.

Chris Webber, fighting a case of stomach flu, had 29 points and 10 rebounds but missed a potential game-winning jumper with five seconds left in regulation.

After trailing the entire game, the Kings outscored the Sixers 32-15 in the fourth quarter thanks to 11 points by Stojakovic _ including three straight 3-pointers _ and Bobby Jackson's solid defense on Iverson.

Sacramento pulled within one with five minutes to play and tied it at 96 on Webber's driving layup with 2:01 left. It was tied at 98 when Webber missed a jumper with five seconds left, and Jackson's tip attempt missed by an inch.

Philadelphia got the last shot of regulation, but Iverson's 17-footer was off.

The Sixers opened the game in an offensive groove, hitting 14 of their first 20 shots and steadily opening an 18-point lead in the first quarter. Sacramento chipped back in the next two quarters, but they never pulled within striking distance of the lead until the final minutes. Notes:@ McKie and Philadelphia coach Larry Brown received technical fouls late in the first half for protesting a foul call on McKie. Brown nearly came to half-court to scream at referee Jason Phillips. ... The Sixers also were irked that a backcourt violation wasn't called on Jackson with 24 seconds left in regulation. The referees said Jackson didn't have possession of the inbounds pass before he fumbled it into the backcourt. ... The 76ers hadn't won at Arco Arena since March 1, 1989, when Charles Barkley had a triple-double.

Allen Iverson 55 pts Playoff Career High vs NO Hornets 2003
By pennyccw

Philadelphia 98, New Orleans 90
Iverson's 55 Gives Sixers Game 1

In the illustious history of the Philadelphia 76ers, nobody -- not Wilt, not Dr. J, not Moses -- had an individual performance like Allen Iverson's against the New Orleans Hornets.

Iverson scored a team playoff-record 55 points as the 76ers defeated the Hornets, 98-90, in Game One of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

"He was on fire," Hornets coach Paul Silas said of Iverson, who fell eight points shy of Michael Jordan's NBA playoff record set exactly 17 years ago in a double-overtime loss at Boston. "Anytime a guy like that is on fire, there's very little you can do except to take the ball out of his hands. It's right up there with Michael's 63. He just had a great night."

The NBA saw some superlative performances over the opening weekend of the playoffs, but the best came in the last game.

Iverson shot 21-of-32, including 9-of-11 in the fourth quarter, and 10-of-11 from the line to surpass his own playoff record of 54 points set in a 97-92 triumph over Toronto in Game 2 of the 2001 conference semifinals.

"I knew he'd come out with fire in his eyes," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "(Dirk) Nowitzki goes for 46 and Tracy (McGrady) goes for 43, Kobe (Bryant) went for 39. So I figured he was motivated a little."

"I just caught a rhythm," Iverson said. "I got in one of those rhythms where the basket looks like an ocean and I was just throwing rocks in it. My teammates did a superb job just getting me the ball in the spots where I need them, and every time I came up free, the ball was there."

It was the sixth-highest total in NBA playoff history and three points shy of Iverson's personal best.

"This was his best ever, by far," Brown said. "And he's had some pretty darn good games."

With his teammates almost entirely shut down by the Hornets, Iverson stepped up time and again. After George Lynch nailed a baseline jumper to get New Orleans within 86-84 with 4:05 remaining, Iverson countered with back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Sixers hang on.

New Orleans got within 94-90 on a pair of free throws by Jamal Mashburn with 52 seconds left, but Iverson -- who scored 20 points in the final 12 minutes -- responded 15 seconds later with an arching scoop shot over P.J. Brown.

Eric Snow capped the scoring with a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to play.

Snow added 15 points and 10 assists and Aaron McKie scored 12 points for the Sixers, who lost two of three meetings with the Hornets during the season, including a 94-89 defeat a week ago.

"This is the same team," Snow said. "But you have to remember, we didn't have Keith Van Horn or Derrick Coleman that game, and they absolutely killed us on the rebounding. That is our top two leading rebounders that didn't even play. So I think that they made up for a lot of that."

New Orleans again outrebounded Philadelphia, 37-32, but the Sixers scored more second-chance points, 12-7.

Mashburn scored 28 points to pace New Orleans, which fell behind for good, 70-68, on a 3-pointer by Iverson that closed the third quarter.

Iverson scored 13 points in the opening period as the Sixers jumped to a 27-20 lead.

New Orleans took its biggest lead, 36-30, on a pair of free throws by David Wesley with 6:45 left in the second quarter before Philadelphia tightened its defense and went back on top, 49-44, entering the break. Iverson had 25 points at halftime.

"I felt good in the beginning especially in the first quarter," Iverson said. "I hit some free throws and my free-throw shooting felt good. A lot of times when my free throws are good, I feel like my jumper can get on early in the game. But in the second half, the third and fourth quarters, that is when I knew I was in a rhythm."

The Sixers had 24 assists and committed 15 turnovers, while the Hornets had 12 assists and 24 giveaways, which Philadelphia converted into 24 points.

"We had opportunities to go ahead and we turned the ball over, and that's what hurt us," Lynch said. "They are a good team and you cannot turn the ball over against them. They are going to scrap. This series is going to come down to who is going to get on the floor more and whoever leaves it on the floor, leaves some skin, leaves some blood, that's who is going to win."

"We were not very good tonight and we have to be better in order to win," Silas added. "If we had taken care of the ball, we really would have done better."

"I think if I'm a fan, sitting there watching what he did, I would be pretty excited," Brown said of Iverson. "It was pretty neat. He took it upon himself and did extraordinary things. I don't know how it could get much better than that.

"(But) we can't do it with expecting him to get 51. We have to do it as a team. In fairness to him, we have to have people step up and accept that responsibility."

Allen Iverson 40pts vs Stephon Marbury 33pts (Nate's Winner)
By pennyccw

After playing poorly in the first half, the New York Knicks went with a smaller lineup and came up with their biggest win of the season.

A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by 5-foot-9 Nate Robinson lifted the Knicks to a 105-102 overtime victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

Stephon Marbury scored a season-high 33 points and rookie Channing Frye added 21 points and 11 rebounds for New York, which rallied from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter and then squandered a nine-point lead in the fourth.

"We got really aggressive, especially when we went small," Knicks coach Larry Brown said. "We got loose balls, we didn't turn the ball over and we got second shots. We really hurt them on the boards."

Allen Iverson had 40 points and 10 assists, and Chris Webber scored 19 points for Philadelphia, which has lost four of five. Webber tipped in Iverson's miss with .6 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The 76ers, who trailed by six in overtime, tied it on Iverson's 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds remaining. The Knicks pushed the ball up the court and Robinson took a 23-foot jumper from the right side just before the buzzer.

"I just knew if I get it up high enough I would have a good chance of making it," Robinson said. "So I just shot it hard and let it go."

"The sky's the limit for him," Iverson said. "He's a tough guard. He's got the best coach in the world on his side."

New York, outplayed in the first half, outhustled and outworked the 76ers for a key 16½-minute stretch in the second half.

After Kyle Korver's 3-pointer pushed Philadelphia's lead to 63-47 a minute into the third quarter, New York went on an 18-2 run to tie the game at 65 on Marbury's short jumper with 3:27 remaining in the period.

"At halftime, coach got on us because he felt like we had been playing very sloppy," Knicks rookie Channing Frye said. "We got out in the second half and took care of the ball, played some defense and made some shots."

Iverson's 20-footer briefly regained the lead for the Sixers before Marbury hit a 3-pointer to give New York its first lead of the game. Marbury's 22-footer increased the Knicks' lead to 70-67 with 1:53 left in the quarter.

"They made adjustments," Webber said. "They just played better than we did in the second half. But there's no excuse for a (16-point) lead going down like that. It hurts when you play that well together in the first half, and in the second half you don't do it."

New York pushed its lead to 83-74 on Robinson's 3-pointer with more than 5 minutes left in the game. However, Iverson scored 10 points during a 13-4 run to tie the game at 87 with 1:42 left.

The Knicks regained the lead 18 seconds later on a goaltending call on Samuel Dalembert, and Jamal Crawford's turnaround jumper with 47 seconds left gave New York an 91-88 lead.

Webber's hook shot 12 seconds later made it a one-point game, before Marbury followed with a driving layup to make it 93-90 with 19.9 seconds remaining.

"They played better offensively and we did a bad job guarding," Iverson said. "We had a chance to put them away but we have been going through this the last couple of games, having leads and giving them up."

Andre Iguodala's two free throws pulled Philadelphia within 93-92 with 10.8 seconds left.

Crawford made one free throw with 8.7 seconds left, and Webber's tip sent the game to overtime.

Game notes
Frye made his first NBA start. ... Penny Hardaway, Matt Barnes, and Jerome James were inactive for the Knicks. ... New York, which had lost three of its previous four, won its second straight at home. ... Dalembert made his season debut after missing the first 11 games with an injured right quadriceps. ... Jamal Mashburn, Louis Williams and Den Gai were inactive for the Sixers. ... Anthony Fedorov, a finalist from last season's "American Idol," sang the national anthem before the game. ... Celebrities in attendance included former tennis star John McEnroe, and actors Edward Norton, Rosario Dawson, Chazz Palminteri and Steve Schirripa.

Allen Iverson 48pts vs Michael Redd the Bucks 04/05 NBA
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson looked like he might be on his way to another career game when he put up 45 points in the first three quarters against his favorite foils, the Milwaukee Bucks.

After a quiet fourth quarter, Iverson settled for 48 points and leading Philadelphia to a 118-111 victory Tuesday night over the Bucks, who have been burned for three straight games of at least 40 points by the 76ers All-Star.

"Honestly, they play me one-on-one, straight up," Iverson said of a Bucks' defense he penetrated at will. "Except in the last quarter. I guess they felt like they had to do something."

By then, it was too late.

Iverson reached 40 points against the Bucks for the sixth time in his career, his most against any opponent. He had 40 and 54 points in his previous two games versus Milwaukee.

"AI has our number," said Mo Williams who drew the difficult task of trying to stop Iverson. "He seems to play really, really well against us."

He got off to a fast start in this one, scoring 20 in the first quarter.

"He was just on fire," Williams said after watching Iverson make 18-of-30 shots, including five 3-pointers. "He was in such a good rhythm that really nobody could stop him tonight."

Sixers coach Jim O'Brien could only agree after Philadelphia beat the Bucks for the third time this season.

"It was the quickest 40 points I think I have ever witnessed," O'Brien said. "He was spectacular."

Kyle Korver had 20 points and Chris Webber added 15 before fouling out with 2:02 left in the game as the Sixers snapped a three-game losing streak and won with Webber for the first time.

Michael Redd had 35 points, Desmond Mason added 28 and Williams 22 and nine assists and three steals for Milwaukee, which had won six of seven at home.

Iverson had a career-high and NBA season-high of 60 points set against Orlando on Feb. 12 and seemed set to surpass before coming up with just one 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.

The Bucks made a game of it in the fourth by making 16-of-18 free throws and getting 10 points from Mason and nine from Redd.

"When he gives you 48 points in three quarters, it's amazing," Webber said. "I've seen him go off like that before, but it's always been against me. It was fun to pump him up and talk to him to keep him going.

The Sixers (27-29) pulled to 1½ games behind Atlantic Division-leading Boston in Webber's second game since being traded by Sacramento just before the deadline.

"It was just important to get the first win with Chris," Iverson said. "The first game bothered him a lot."

In his Sixers' debut on Saturday, Webber had 16 points, 11 rebounds and three steals, but missed a last-second layup in a 101-99 home loss against the Kings.

Iverson, who had eight assists and four steals, took only three shots in the fourth.

Milwaukee opened the quarter with a 15-6 run and pulled to 102-93 on two free throws by Mason with 7:12 left in the game. Iverson missed his first shot of the quarter just before Korver hit a 3-pointer that pushed the lead back to 10 points.

Webber fouled out when he bumped Redd in the backcourt. Redd made the two free throws to get the Bucks to 114-107. The Bucks never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

Korver hit a 3-pointer to start a 20-6 run in the third quarter, highlighted by Iverson's three 3-pointers. The Sixers opened a 91-71 lead with 2:00 left in the third.

Iverson was great from the tip, darting through the Bucks and taking advantage of Williams on the defensive end. Iverson was 9-of-13 from the floor and hit eight consecutive shots to help the Sixers take a 36-33 after one.

Iverson had 10 points in the second quarter on four driving layups and two free throws.

Iverson also turned in some tough defense, taking a charge from Mason. Iverson, flat on his back, watched as the Bucks coach Terry Porter was called for a technical on the play.

Mason had 18 points for the Bucks in the first half, including a three-point play just before the half that cut the Sixers' lead to 65-58.

Allen Iverson 34pts Winning Shot vs Kobe Bryant Game 05/06
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson made the most of the wide-open look Andre Iguodala never gave Kobe Bryant.

Iverson outplayed Bryant in an anticipated matchup of the league's leading scorers, scoring 34 points and sinking the winner with 22.2 seconds left to lead the 76ers to an 85-81 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.

Iverson -- stumbling in the fourth quarter after he missed an easy layup, two free throws and was whistled for traveling -- stepped just inside the 3-point arc and buried a jumper in the final seconds for an 83-81 lead.

Bryant missed a jumper over Iguodala with about 5 seconds left, and Iverson made two free throws to seal Philadelphia's third straight win after losing its first three.

Kyle Korver and John Salmons each hit critical 3-pointers in the final 2½ minutes to pad the Sixers' lead, but it wasn't enough once Bryant finally got going.

Unable to find his shot all game against Iguodala's sticky D, Bryant came through in the final minute with a three-point play and then another basket with 37.8 seconds left to rally the Lakers and tie the score at 81.

But Iverson made up for a small stretch of miscues that nearly cost the Sixers, hitting a jumper that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

"Once they made one breakdown, they left me open and I got a good look at it," Iverson said.

Bryant came in averaging a league-high 34.8 points, but was held in check by Iguodala on 7-for-27 shooting.

"That's something we expect from Dre every night," Iverson said. "We know he has the ability to shut people down."

Chris Mihm picked up the slack inside with 20 points, and Lamar Odom added 16.

Iverson -- second in the league behind Bryant with 29.8 points -- fired up the Sixers and started a rally late in the fourth when he was challenged on his way to the basket.

After a rare miss on an uncontested fastbreak layup on the previous possession, Iverson was staggered on a hard foul the next time down by Sasha Vujacic. Vujacic threw his arm back and connected with Iverson in the neck, sending the feisty All-Star into a fit. He needed to be restrained from a possible fight.

Both players were whistled for technicals, so Iverson attempted only two free throws for the shot, and he paced around the court, agitated, before going to the line.

After he sank the first one, he turned to his left and glared at Vujacic. He hit the second to pull the Sixers to 69-66.

Iverson added two more free throws the next time down and Chris Webber followed with a spin move to give the Sixers a 70-69 lead.

But Iverson missed two free throws with the Sixers holding a 78-74 lead and traveled with 52 seconds left, allowing Bryant to make the game-tying running jumper.

Bryant missed his first eight shots before going up-and-under for his first bucket late in the second quarter. Bryant added another before the halftime buzzer to give the Lakers a 46-42 lead.

He was stifled in the first half (3-for-14) by Iguodala.

"That was a game I was forced to take a lot of shots with a hand in my face," Bryant said.

Iguodala might have concentrated too much on defense, because he was a non-factor offensively until his baseline jumper gave the Sixers a 73-71 lead. Iguodala made another timely play when Bryant was hit with an offensive foul for pushing off on the next possession.

Iguodala scored five points, but he finished with 11 rebounds.

"I had some shots I should have made," Bryant said. "We had difficulty down the stretch. We weren't able to capitalize on some makable shots."

While Bryant struggled, the Lakers relied on Mihm. The 7-foot center with the meager 6.8 points per average played outstanding, shooting 8-for-12 from the floor and finishing with nine rebounds.

Allen Iverson 39pts Game Winning Shot vs Howard Magic 06/07
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson can hit a game-winning shot even when he's being defended pretty well.

Iverson scored 39 points from every angle on the court, including a driving, fallaway runner from 10 feet out with 2.2 seconds left to give the Philadelphia 76ers a 105-103 victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

"I wanted to get in a little closer than I did, but I just took what the defense gave me and fortunately, it went in," Iverson said.

Magic guard Keyon Dooling was all over Iverson on the play.

"That wasn't the first time he threw one in like that," Dooling said. "He was definitely on tonight. That final shot was just another example of a great player making a great play when they needed him."

The Magic had a chance to tie the game, but Grant Hill's 12-footer at the buzzer was short.

Hill, who led the Magic with 25 points, had hit a similar shot to tie the game at 103 with 12 seconds left, but Iverson answered that with the game-winner.

"They wanted it a little more than we did and that's a little disappointing," Hill said.

Iverson finished 15-of-25, including three 3-pointers, but he was hardly alone in scoring from the perimeter. Reserve Kyle Korver had 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting, while Andre Iguodala and Chris Webber each added 11 for Philadelphia, which shot 56.1 percent from the field. The Sixers scored only 26 points in the paint.

Korver was a particular sore spot for the Magic, who tried four different defenders on him, but couldn't find one that could stop him. He hit all four 3-point attempts and all four free throw shots in a near-perfect night of shooting.

"You can tell Kyle likes the new basketball and if he likes it, I'll just deal with it," Iverson said. "I call him 'The Sniper' and he proved it tonight."

Hedo Turkoglu had 15 points and nine rebounds and Dwight Howard finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Magic.

The Magic hit 53.4 percent (39-of-73) but turnovers and foul problems kept them from finding a sustained period of success. Orlando committed 23 turnovers and big men Tony Battie and Darko Milicic played a total of 33 minutes because of foul problems.

"When you let a team shoot 56 percent and you commit 23 turnovers, you have to play a perfect game to win," Hill said. "We didn't play a perfect game. We've got to learn from it and move on."

A three-point play by Dooling sparked a 9-0 run that helped Orlando cut the deficit to 53-52 at halftime.

Iverson hit his first five shots in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer that gave Philadelphia a 69-60 lead. His streak ended when the 6-foot-8 Hill took over the defensive assignment. Iverson didn't score again the rest of the period and the Magic used a 14-3 run to gain a 78-77 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Sixers went up 92-86 on a 3-pointer by rookie Rodney Carney with 7:15 left, but the Magic rallied again. A three-point play by Hill and 3-pointer by Turkoglu gave the Magic a 99-97 lead with 2:55 left.

The Sixers scored six straight points to go up 103-99 with 42 seconds to play, but a dunk by Howard and Hill's driving layup tied the game at 103 with 12 seconds to play.

Allen Iverson 41pts Break Kobe's Ankle vs Shaq Lakers 98/99
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson's eighth career 40-point game had a nice little unexpected bonus -- a victory for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Iverson scored 41 points, upstaging Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, as the 76ers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 105-90, for their fourth win in five games.

In two-plus seasons, Iverson had seven previous games with 40 or more points and the 76ers lost them all. On February 12, the NBA scoring leader had a league season-high 46 points in a 98-94 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

"When I score 40 points, we've lost," Iverson said. "Tonight, we won, and I guess I finally got the monkey off my back. I didn't know what I had until I came out of the game at the end and looked up at the scoreboard. I saw what I had and said, `I hope it doesn't come back to haunt me.'"

Working primarily against Philadelphia native Bryant, Iverson shot 17-of-36 from the field. He scored between nine and 12 points in every period and added a season-high 10 assists and five rebounds.

"I wanted to get off to a good start," Iverson said. "Some earlier shots were going off the rim, then all of a sudden, my shots began to drop. My teammates began to get the ball to me, they did a good job as always of getting me the ball in the right spot, and I was able to make the big shots at the end."

"The little kid was phenomenal," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "I had to take him out at the beginning just to calm him down because he was really wired. Yeah, he took a lot of shots, but for the most part, his selection was good."

With 55 seconds left, he exited to a thunderous ovation and a chant of "Beat LA" from the First Union Center crowd that recalled the rivalry between these teams from a generation ago.

O'Neal and Bryant scored 23 points each for the Lakers, who fell to 1-3 on their six-game road trip. Los Angeles has lost its last three meetings with Philadelphia, with Iverson averaging 34.3 points. The 76ers had not beaten the Lakers three straight times since the 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons, when the teams met in consecutive NBA Finals.

"This team has come a long way," Brown said. "I hope we can keep a level head, where they can expect to play well against the good teams, as well as playing well against teams with records worse than theirs."

Lakers forward Dennis Rodman missed his fourth straight game due to an excused absence for personal reasons. With the mercurial Rodman in the lineup, Los Angeles is 9-0. Without him, it is just 8-9.

"We'll welcome him with open arms when he comes back," Lakers coach Kurt Rambis said. "But I have no idea when he's coming back."

"He's obviously a factor," O'Neal said. "He has personal problems, whatever that means, nobody really knows. I don't think about it. I know the organization will do what they have to do."

O'Neal was saddled by foul trouble, eventually fouling out with just four rebounds midway through the final period. He also missed 5-of-12 free throws and committed five turnovers.

Iverson thoroughly outplayed O'Neal and Bryant in the third quarter, when the Sixers took control. After a 3-pointer by Glen Rice -- his first basket of the game -- gave the Lakers a 56-54 lead, Iverson made a jumper and 3-pointer and set up two baskets during a 12-2 burst that gave Philadelphia a 66-58 lead with 5:50 remaining.

Iverson buried a 22-footer to trigger a 6-0 spurt. Tyrone Hill and Aaron Mckie made free throws before Iverson fed Theo Ratliff for a dunk and a 74-62 bulge with 2:02 left in the period.

"For the most part, we did what we wanted to do," Lakers coach Kurt Rambis said. "We forced him (Iverson) to take a lot of outside shots. Unfortunately for us, he made a lot of them."

"Coach Brown noticed that we didn't defend the pick-and-roll very well, so he let Allen run the pick-and-roll and they did a very good job of setting screens and getting him open," Bryant said.

O'Neal and Bryant combined for no baskets in the third quarter as the Lakers shot just 17 percent (3-of-18). Iverson scored 11 in the period, which ended with Philadelphia holding a 76-67 lead.

Iverson had a jumper and 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter before a 3-pointer by Rice and a dunk by Robert Horry pulled Los Angeles within 83-77 with 9:44 to go. Iverson made a pair of free throws and a technical foul shot on O'Neal. Matt Geiger hit a jumper and two free throws off O'Neal's fifth foul as the Sixers rebuilt the lead to 90-77 with 6:33 left.

Allen Iverson 32pts 9assists Denver Nuggets vs Portland Trailblazers 06/07 NBA
By pennyccw

Playing in just his second game with the Denver Nuggets, Steve Blake showed the Portland Trail Blazers what they've been missing.

Blake, traded to Milwaukee in the offseason and acquired by Denver from the Bucks last week, had a career-high 25 points against his former team Sunday night, in Denver's 109-93 victory over Portland.

"I'm not surprised because a good basketball player is a good basketball player and that's what he is," said Blake's new teammate, Allen Iverson.

Iverson had 32 points and nine assists for the Nuggets, who trailed at halftime but outscored the Blazers 41-17 in the third quarter.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Denver, coming off a 90-86 loss Friday to the Houston Rockets.

Blake was acquired by Denver on Thursday in a trade that sent Earl Boykins to Milwaukee. He started in the backcourt for Portland last season with Juan Dixon.

"It's better than good," Blake said about his new home. "It's been a lot of fun. We're playing the style I like to play. Coach is letting me get the ball and push it. And with the players we have on this team, you can't help but be successful."

The Blazers, coming off a victory over the Sacramento Kings 95-87 on Friday, have lost eight of their last 10.

Rookie Sergio Rodriguez scored a career-high 23 points and had 10 assists for Portland.

The Blazers' starters were largely ineffective, contributing just 20 points. Center Joel Przybilla and point guard Dan Dickau combined to play 23 minutes and did not score.

"The first unit just couldn't get it going," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "Not only did they have a difficult time offensively in the third quarter -- but in giving up 41 points it looks like they didn't defend anyone."

The Nuggets at times triple-teamed Portland forward Zach Randolph, who scored four points on 1-of-12 shooting. Randolph was averaging 23.9 points and 10.1 rebounds going into the game.

Randolph said he gets triple-teamed "all the time." That wasn't his problem.

"I couldn't hit a shot," he said. "The ball wouldn't go in. It was one of the nights."

Portland guard Jarrett Jack, who was in a car accident on Friday, remained out with a concussion. Dickau made his second start in Jack's place.

Iverson scored eight straight points in the first quarter to put Denver up 21-13. The Nuggets led by as many as 12 points early but the Blazers closed the gap, and took a 36-35 lead on Dixon's jumper.

Rodriguez hit a pull-up jumper and a layup to give the Blazers a 51-43 lead. Portland outscored the Nuggets 37-18 in the second quarter and led 56-49 at the half.

The Nuggets opened the second half on an 18-0 run to take a 67-56 lead they would never relinquish. Iverson's bank shot at 10:19 pulled the Nuggets into a 56-56 tie. Blake capped the run with his fifth 3-pointer.

The Blazers' first points of the second half came at 6:54 on a Raef LaFrentz free throw.

Blake surpassed his career high of 23 set while he was a Blazer against Houston last March 5.

"We stepped up defense in the third quarter and turned good defense into good offense," Blake said. "We were pushing it and making shots. We were clicking as a team." Carmelo Anthony, Denver's leading scorer, was still serving a 15-game suspension because of the brawl against the New York Knicks on Dec. 16. Anthony returns Jan. 22 against Memphis.

Game notes
The Blazers' 37 second-quarter points were a season high. ... Denver's 41 third-quarter points were the team's season-high, too. ... Denver has won eight straight games against the Blazers, and 12 of the last 13.

Allen Iverson 33pts 9assists Philadelphia 76ers vs Indiana Pacers 05/06 NBA
By pennyccw

Stephen Jackson atoned for a bunch of misses with one clutch play.

Jackson's layup with 2.9 seconds left lifted the Indiana Pacers to a 94-93 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday.

Allen Iverson had 33 points and nine assists, but couldn't lead the Sixers to their third straight victory.

Anthony Johnson had 18 points and Jackson scored 15 for Indiana, which has won three of four.

Down by one point, the Pacers got possession after a shot-clock violation on Philadelphia with 4.9 seconds left. Sarunas Jasikevicius threw an inbound pass to Jackson, who went around a stumbling Kyle Korver to make an uncontested shot.

"I was 0-for-infinity," Jackson said. "I just wanted to make a shot. We knew they'd switch. I went backdoor and got to the basket. My teammates showed confidence in me to give me the ball. It seemed like I hadn't made a shot all game."

Jackson missed 15 of his first 19 shots before the easy layup. Chris Webber then missed a jumper at the buzzer after an inbound pass from Iverson.

"For that to happen with 4.9 seconds left, it's devastating," Iverson said.

Korver was a surprise presence on the floor at that end, considering he lost his starting job because of his poor defense.

"We didn't make the correct switch," Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said without singling out which player made the defensive mistake. "Whoever didn't make the switch didn't do it on purpose. This isn't about placing blame, it's about figuring out how to do it right at the end."

Iverson has scored 120 points and dished out 31 assists in three games since he was snubbed for the U.S. national team. He reached 40 points and 10 assists in consecutive games for the first time in his 10-year career, but fell short of doing it again.

After a turnover by Peja Stojakovic, Iverson sank a fadeaway jumper to give the Sixers a 91-90 lead with 2:26 left. John Salmons forced Fred Jones to commit another turnover, but Iverson's jumper was short and the Pacers reclaimed the lead on Johnson's turnaround shot.

Webber made two free throws with 50.3 seconds left to put Philadelphia ahead 93-92. Jackson then missed a long jumper from the corner and Korver grabbed the rebound, but the Sixers couldn't get another shot and gave it back to Indiana.

"That was my fault," Iverson said. "They played good defense and I made a bad play."

The Pacers (30-26) stayed ahead of Philadelphia (30-29) in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

"It was a great win for us," Johnson said. "That's the type of game that had been going against us this year."

Iverson had 12 of Philadelphia's first 14 points in the third quarter, but the Sixers couldn't pull away. Jones had a reverse dunk off an alley-oop pass from Stojakovic to give Indiana a 69-66 lead late in the third. Jones and Jasikevicius then hit 3-pointers to extend the margin to 77-71 going into the fourth quarter.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half. Webber had a reverse slam and Iverson made consecutive jumpers late in the second quarter before Webber added another dunk to give Philadelphia a 46-45 lead at halftime.

Game notes
Steven Hunter made his sixth straight start at center for the Sixers, with Samuel Dalembert coming off the bench for the third game in a row after missing three with an ankle injury. Dalembert made all three of his shots -- all dunks. ... Forward Jermaine O'Neal (groin), guard Jamaal Tinsley (elbow) and forward Austin Croshere (concussion) remained sidelined for the depleted Pacers. ... The teams have split two of their three meetings. In 1½ seasons, the Sixers are 26-18 when Iverson and Webber score at least a combined 50 points . ... Indiana's Danny Granger fouled out with under a minute left. ... Stojakovic spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench.

Allen Iverson 35pts 12asts vs Notwizki (a night after 51pts)
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson went hard to the basket. He didn't get there, but he did draw a foul.

The next time down the court, A.I. made another veteran move, drawing another foul on the same defender.

The game was only 1 1/2 minutes old, yet Iverson already was in full control.

A day after scoring 51 points in a defeat, Iverson may have been even better, scoring 35 points and dishing out 12 assists while leading the Denver Nuggets past the Dallas Mavericks 122-109 Thursday night.

"A.I. had it all going from everywhere," said Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki, who tied his season high with 32 points and had 12 rebounds. "He was driving and making shots in-between."

Iverson made 12-of-19 field goals and was 11-of-13 from the line. It was his sixth time scoring 30 points and his fourth time with at least 10 assists. However, this was his first 30-10 game of the season.

"I thought A.I. had a real good feel for the game," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "His game is to get to the free-throw line and to run. Dallas tried to get the ball out of his hands. He definitely did a good job getting the guys involved."

Linas Kleiza benefited from Iverson's passing, scoring a season-best 23. Carmelo Anthony had 23 points and Kenyon Martin, a Dallas native, had 18 points and seven rebounds. Marcus Camby added 14 rebounds and eight points. Denver made 50.5 percent of its shots and that was with Anthony going 9-of-30.

For all his statistical prowess, Iverson's most impressive number might've been his game-best playing time of 42:54. Now in his 12th season, the 32-year-old guard played a full 48 minutes the previous night in a loss at home to the Los Angeles Lakers.

"He's the Energizer bunny," said fellow starting guard Anthony Carter. "He just doesn't get tired. He was charged up for this game."

Maybe it was the microphones.

Anyone watching on TNT got a little more insight than any previous NBA broadcast as this was the first with players and coaches wearing microphones. There were sideline interviews with the coaches between quarters, too.

Among the insights: Karl saying, "When we pass the ball, we usually play well," and Mavericks coach Avery Johnson telling his team during an early timeout, "Good hustle, men, keep it up."

They didn't.

The Mavericks allowed their most points this season in a quarter (39, the first), a half (64) and a game. The problems were at both ends of the court as the Mavericks also committed a season-high 19 turnovers.

"It was a layup drill out there," Nowitzki said. "At no point in the game I thought we could really stop them."

That's part of a growing trend for Dallas, which is routinely allowing 30-point quarters; it's happened in 10 of the last 11 games.

The losses are becoming common, too. This was the Mavs' second straight, third in four games and sixth in the last nine.

"It's not one thing that's the problem. It's a number of things," said Devin Harris, the defender suckered by Iverson on those early plays. "Our defense is affecting our offense. Hopefully these are growing pains we won't have later on. But this is fixable. It's all attitude. I'll bet money that Avery will make it better."

Denver took control with a 24-7 run during a span bridging the first two quarters. The Nuggets led by as many as 16, but the Mavericks tied it at 82 late in the third.

Dallas was still within 94-92 in the final minute of the period, but things didn't stay close for long. A pair of baskets by Iverson in the final seconds of the quarter started a 13-2 spurt that also included a 3-pointer from defensive specialist Eduardo Najera.

Najera, the microphone-wearing Nuggets player, smacked Nowitzki on his way to the basket, starting a fast break for Denver's final points in the rally.

Jerry Stackhouse scored a season-high 23 points and Josh Howard had 20. Howard had 17 at halftime, then got his fourth foul seconds into third quarter and didn't score again until there was 8:18 left in the game.

Nowitzki picked up some of the slack for Howard, scoring 13 in the third quarter. But he had only two points in the final 16 minutes.

Harris scored 12 points. Devean George was scoreless in seven minutes, but at least he played. He'd been out all season with a stress reaction in his left foot.

Allen Iverson MVP Season 43pts vs Pistons (Mutombo's Debut)
By pennyccw

Philadelphia 76ers obtain 7-foot-2-inch Dikembe Mutombo, last great center still standing in Eastern Conference, in six-player deal with Atlanta Hawks that will involve Theo Ratliff and Toni Kukoc going to Atlanta; Allen Iverson, Mutombo's new teammate, lauds move as one that will help 76ers win championship;

Dikembe Mutombo looked as if he'd been playing with the Philadelphia 76ers for years instead of hours.

Mutombo had 17 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots in his debut with the visiting 76ers, who beat the Detroit Pistons 99-78 Friday night.

"He changed the whole game with his defense and rebounding," said Philadelphia's Allen Iverson, who had 43 points and 10 rebounds.

Mutombo was traded with Roshown McLeod from Atlanta to Philadelphia on Thursday for Theo Ratliff, Nazr Mohammed and Pepe Sanchez and Toni Kukoc in the biggest deal of the season.

After the game, Mutombo looked relieved to be sitting down with ice packs surrounding both knees.

He flew from Atlanta to Philadelphia late Thursday night, had a physical at 7 a.m., then arrived in Detroit at about 5 p.m. Friday.

"I need some sleep," Mutombo said. "But really, I'm so excited to be with this group. They're all about winning and we have a great coach."

Sixers coach Larry Brown was glad that Mutombo provided a lot of the same things as Ratliff.

"He rebounded and defended like he has his whole career," Brown said. "I thought he was terrific. . . . I think it's pretty remarkable what he was able to do under those circumstances."

Philadelphia (42-14) has won six straight games.

Allen Iverson 36pts 8 asts vs Pistons 2005 NBA Playoff Gm 4
By pennyccw

When it was time for Detroit to get back into the game or allow Philadelphia to even their playoff series, Chauncey Billups took over.

Billups made two clutch 3-pointers. He hit a nice fadeaway, and sank a couple of foul shots.

By the time Billups finished scoring 10 straight points for the Pistons in the final 3:05 of regulation, the 76ers' lead was gone -- and so might have been their shot at making this a long series.

Billups scored 12 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, Rasheed Wallace hit a couple of 3-pointers in overtime and Detroit overcame an inspired effort by Allen Iverson to go up 3-1 in its first-round series with a 97-92 win over the Sixers on Sunday.

"It seemed like the tide was turning, nothing was really going good for us," Billups said. "I wasn't really making too many shots. I wanted to try. If I'm going to go down, I'm going to go down fighting.

"Shots just started going for me and we started to run a couple of plays for me."

The Pistons survived another scare from Philadelphia, and headed home with a chance to wrap up their playoff series. Game 5 is Tuesday in Detroit.

"The guys competed their guts out. They just got beat by the best team in the world," said Sixers coach Jim O'Brien.

After Billups carried the Pistons in a frantic finish to the fourth quarter, Wallace hit a decisive 3-pointer with 1:29 left in OT. Richard Hamilton hit a runner on the baseline with 14.5 seconds left, then sealed the win with a couple of free throws.

"Those were good shots from myself, Rip and Chauncey," Wallace said. "I'd take those shots any day."

Wallace's 3 came right after Chris Webber hit a 3-pointer and Iverson made two free throws, tying the game 90-all.

"He told me to come to him because he was feeling it," Hamilton said. "He knocked down a big shot for us."

Rasheed Wallace had 17 points and Ben Wallace added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who bounced back from a Game 3 loss Friday night.

Tayshaun Prince, who added 17 points, went down briefly at the end of the third quarter with a mildly sprained right ankle, but returned to the game. He was listed as day-to-day.

Iverson again did his best to carry the Sixers, scoring 36 points on 14-for-24 shooting with eight assists.

Webber added 23 points, including several key baskets in the third and fourth quarters. Samuel Dalembert had 15 rebounds.

Iverson did all he could in going over 30 points for the third time in the series, including a running halfcourt shot down the left side to end the first quarter and a jumper with 28.3 seconds left in regulation that gave the Sixers a short-lived 82-80 lead.

"I could feel bad, and I do, but I feel real good about our effort," Iverson said. "I feel real good about my teammates."

Billups answered Iverson's final 3 in regulation with a 3-pointer from the corner that gave the Pistons an 83-82 lead with 22 seconds left.

Billups, though, got a little too aggressive and fouled Willie Green, sending the 78 percent free throw shooter to the line with 3.1 seconds left. Green missed the first and hit the second to tie the game.

"I was just concentrating on trying to sink it, but, unfortunately, I came up short on a free throw that could have won the game for us," said Green, who left the game briefly in the second quarter to get eight stitches over his left eye.

Rasheed Wallace missed a long jumper after Green's free throw, and the game went into overtime.

The 76ers had a nine-point lead with just over 6 minutes left.

With the lead going back and forth late in the fourth quarter, normally reserved Sixers chairman Ed Snider started acting more like Dallas owner Mark Cuban, leaping from his courtside seat and waving his arms while protesting a non-call.

Iverson made his boss feel better with a 3-pointer, but Billups came right back down with a 3 of his own, pulling the Pistons to 80-76 with 2:59 left.

"I was just waiting to run the offense and then I decided to be aggressive," Billups said. "Guys were finding me and shots were going down."

Allen Iverson 28pts vs KG Pierce Ray Allen Celtics 07/08 NBA
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson felt no satisfaction from knocking off the top team in the league, just added pressure.

Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points, Iverson added 28 and the Denver Nuggets spoiled the return of Kevin Garnett, holding on for a 124-118 victory over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

"Winning this game puts a lot of pressure on us, because if you can beat a team like this, then you can beat all the other teams," Iverson said. "We have enough talent to scare some people, but we just have to bring it night in and night out."

The Nuggets even beat the Celtics at full strength -- kind of. Garnett, who's been out since Jan. 25 with a strained abdominal muscle, wasn't his flashy self, finishing with four points on 2-of-7 shooting in close to 21 minutes of action. He also had eight rebounds.

"It was good to get back," said Garnett, who planned to play Wednesday night at Golden State. "It felt good."

His coach didn't mince words when asked about his star's performance.

"Not very good," said Rivers, whose team was 16-0 against the Western Conference before the loss. "But you have to expect that when he sits out that long. He was rusty."

Garnett would agree with the assessment. He felt a little winded, but chalked it up to the Mile High City.

"It feels like I've been out for a couple of years," he said. "There wasn't a lot of air out there."

His legs, though, felt rejuvenated. The nine-game break did him wonders.

"I felt like I was 27," Garnett said. "I felt young."

Garnett came in averaging 19.2 points and 9.9 rebounds this season, and anchoring a Celtics defense that's allowing an NBA-low 89.4 points per game.

However, the Nuggets dictated the pace of play, scoring the most points against the Celtics this season. The previous high was 114 points scored by Toronto and Cleveland.

"We didn't want to get into an offensive shootout," Rivers said. "We did that and still had a chance to win."

Paul Pierce scored 24 points and Rajon Rondo added 22. Ray Allen, fresh off his 28-point performance at Sunday's All-Star Game, scored 14 of his 20 points in the first quarter. He went 2-for-10 after the opening 12 minutes.

But Allen almost helped bring the Celtics back. He cut the lead to 121-118 on a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining when Anthony jumped up to grab his shot that was short of the rim. However, Anthony was called for goaltending. And although the Nuggets held on, Nuggets coach George Karl was upset about the call.

"Wow," Karl said. "He [referee Bennie Adams] likes making big calls and bad calls at the end of the game. How can you call goaltending when the ball is halfway below the rim?"

Anthony didn't understand the call, either.

"I could have stood right under the basket and not even jump and it would have fell right into my hands," Anthony said.

The Nuggets can't complain too much about the officiating -- they were sent to the line a season-high 49 times, hitting 34 of them. The Celtics were 19 of 28 from the free throw line.

"We got a good whistle," Karl said.

Now, he's hoping that with this win comes a little more respect.

"I think the team deserves better acceptance for what it's done," Karl said.

Not that Iverson is putting much stock in one game.

"I don't look at it as we beat the best team in the league, a win is a win," Iverson said. "Obviously, we can compete with anybody. No one seems to know how much talent we have."

Game notes
The Suns and Nuggets will play an outdoor game in Indian Wells, Calif., during the 2008-09 preseason. Camby said he may have to work on his jumper to make it more aerodynamic. "I have a high release -- it's probably not too good outdoors," he said. ... Celtics F Brian Scalabrine was out with a strained right groin. ... Denver is 22-6 at the Pepsi Center this season. ... Boston F Leon Powe had 13 points and tied a season high with 11 rebounds. ... The Nuggets had 19,894 fans in attendance, the largest regular season crowd in franchise history.

Allen Iverson 33pt vs Warriors crossover on Ellis 07/08 NBA
By pennyccw

Allen Iverson squared up, hit a 3-pointer and raised his arms to the air, having thwarted Golden State's final charge. There was no downplaying the importance of this win that put the Denver Nuggets in control of the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The win moved Denver (48-31) a full game ahead of the Warriors in the race for eighth place in the West with only three games remaining. The Nuggets also control the tiebreaker, meaning they can clinch their fifth straight playoff berth by winning two of their final three games.

Golden State (47-32) probably will need to win its final three games and hope Denver loses twice to avoid the distinction of being the winningest team ever to miss the NBA playoffs. Houston won 45 games in 2000-01.

"They're in the catbird seat right now," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "We've got a big problem as far as making the playoffs at this particular time. We're going to need a lot of luck and probably have to win out."

The Nuggets erased the early deficit by scoring 19 straight points in the second quarter and built the lead up from there, putting the back-to-back losses to Sacramento and Seattle from last weekend behind them.

"It was a must win for us. We came up with that attitude," said Anthony, who had 25 points, including a 3-pointer that made it 104-90 with 7:52 to go. "It was 'win or go home' in our minds."

The lead grew to 17 before the Warriors mounted one last run, scoring nine straight points to cut it to 107-99 on Kelenna Azubuike's 3-pointer with just over 4 minutes remaining.

Golden State had two chances to cut into the lead more before Iverson's jumper got the lead back to 10. Iverson then hit the 3-pointer that made it 112-101 with 2:06 to go, icing the most important game of the season.

"AI likes to take that 3, that dagger 3," coach George Karl said. "We were kind of caught in the quandary of should we try to score or run clock. That 3 ended the quandary. It got us over that hump where we didn't have to be scared to death of them making that 3."

Both teams talked about how this game had a playoff feel to it. The yellow "We Believe" placards that were prevalent during the Warriors' playoff run a year ago were taped to each seat. But the Warriors have not been playing with the same energy down the stretch this season as they did during their memorable playoff run a year ago.

They have lost nine of the past 16 games in a lackluster finish to their best season in 14 years. Golden State committed an uncharacteristically high 18 turnovers, missed nine of 24 free throws and got poor shooting nights from Stephen Jackson and Baron Davis.

Davis had a triple-double with 20 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, but shot only 9-for-25. Jackson had 18 points on 5-for-17 shooting. Monta Ellis led the way with 29 points and Al Harrington added 20.

"We've got a job to do, we've still got games," Jackson said. "We can't sit and dwell on this game because we lost. Definitely, everybody's upset, but at the same time we can't do anything about it. We've got to get ready to play the next game."

The notoriously slow-starting Warriors had their best opening quarter in months, taking a 37-22 lead after one for their best start since leading Cleveland by 16 after one back on Dec. 23. That advantage was quickly erased when the Iverson and Smith found their stroke and the Warriors struggled against Denver's zone early in the second.

"All I know is zones change offenses," Karl said. "When teams zone us, I'm not sure it works but it makes us play different. It makes us play in a way we aren't 100 percent comfortable."

It had a similar effect on the Warriors, who missed their first eight shots of the quarter. Iverson had nine points and Smith scored eight in the big run that gave Denver a 43-38 lead.

Game notes
Golden State F Brandan Wright and Denver F Nene missed the game with groin injuries. ... Davis has three triple-doubles this season. ... The Warriors have not won back-to-back games since taking three in a row March 7-12.
Iverson scored 33 points, J.R. Smith added 24 off the bench and the Nuggets overcame a 16-point deficit in the first quarter to win their playoff showdown with the Warriors 114-105 Thursday night.

"Everybody knew what was at stake," Iverson said. "It's easy for players to say it's just another game. But everybody knows it wasn't just another game. It was a game that both teams felt they had to have."

Allen Iverson 31pts vs Crossover move on Durant Sonics 07/08
By pennyccw

Midway through the fourth quarter Allen Iverson unlaced his white and light blue sneakers and found a child in the stands to send home with a little gift.

Wednesday night was that easy, and record-setting, for Iverson and the Denver Nuggets.

Iverson scored 31 points, and the Nuggets were nearly flawless, scoring the most points in the NBA this season in a 138-96 rout of the Seattle SuperSonics

"It was fun to watch," Denver coach George Karl said. "It was fun to see everyone play well."

Denver easily snapped its three-game losing streak, with a large amount of its points coming on uncontested dunks and layups. Toss in 9-for-17 shooting on 3-pointers with all those easy baskets at the rim, and the Nuggets set a franchise record by shooting 67.0 percent.

The previous franchise mark was set 30 years ago, when the Nuggets shot 66.7 percent against New Jersey early in the 1978 season. Denver also bettered the 66.2 percent shooting of the Lakers earlier this season, the previous best in the league.

The highest scoring game before Wednesday night came against Denver, when the Suns scored 137.

"I've been in the league 12 years and I've been playing a long time. I don't know if we've been this hot before, but it was pretty special," Iverson said. "It was fun."

Playing a tired Seattle team certainly helped the Nuggets. The Sonics were finishing off a back-to-back, having played at Golden State a night earlier and offered little resistance at the defensive end.

With Denver trying to chase down a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference, games against teams like lowly Seattle are now must-wins. The Nuggets are a half game behind Golden State for eighth in the West.

"It's crazy," Iverson said of the West. "We've got to concentrate on us and not on anybody else."

Perhaps the brief losing streak and falling out of a playoff spot is what the Nuggets needed to refocus. Karl noticed how sharp his team was during shootaround on Wednesday morning, and it certainly carried over.

Kenyon Martin made 11 of 14 shots and scored 23 points, including a trio of dunks in the third quarter alone. Carmelo Anthony added 16 points and played just 30 minutes. Iverson made 13 of 18 shots and was done early in the fourth quarter. Karl, who missed Monday's loss to Detroit with the flu, got an easy welcome back to the bench, watching the fourth quarter instead of coaching.

"They know they are capable of doing this more often and probably need to do it more often," Karl said.

Mickael Gelabale continued his strong play for Seattle, scoring 16 points. Rookie Kevin Durant continued to struggle with his shot, making just 4 of 17 attempts and scored 16 points.

Denver jumped out quickly, using a 15-4 run midway through the first quarter to take a 27-13 lead on Martin's powerful dunk over Seattle's Nick Collison.

That run was the first of three major first-half spurts for the Nuggets, who shot 62 percent in the half and led 64-45 at halftime.

Iverson capped an 8-0 run early in the second quarter, by crossing over between his legs four times on Collison, then darting into a lane for a soft floater. Linas Kleiza added 12 points in just 14 minutes in the first half and J.R. Smith capped the half with a falling down 3-pointer with less than a second left in the half. Both Smith and Kleiza finished with 15.

"If no one is on the floor, it's hard to shoot the percentage they shot," Seattle coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We didn't defend at all."

The Nuggets lead only grew in the third quarter. Anthony went to the bench for good late in the quarter and Iverson capped his night with a fast-break, no-look drop pass to a trailing Martin for an easy layup and a 100-75 Denver lead after three quarters.

"We've been up numerous times ... and teams can come back to beat you. But tonight we stepped on them and didn't let them get back up," Denver's Marcus Camby said.

Karl picked up his 862nd win, two shy of Jack Ramsay for 10th on the NBA's all-time coaching wins list.

Game notes
Seattle G Earl Watson out again with an illness. Carlesimo was unsure if Watson would be available to play Friday night when Seattle hosts Miami. ... Denver was without F Eduardo Najera, who remained in Denver for personal reasons. ... Seattle G Luke Ridnour didn't play in the second half after experiencing tightness in his right hamstring.

Allen Iverson 31pts vs Nash Shaq Stoudemire Suns 07/08 NBA
By pennyccw

Carmelo Anthony grabbed more rebounds and caught less flak than usual.

Melo crashed the boards as hard as he worked for open looks at the basket, collecting 13 rebounds and scoring 30 points Wednesday night in the Denver Nuggets' 126-113 win over the tired Phoenix Suns.

"I always kid with him about not being a rebounder, being so big," Allen Iverson said of his fellow All-Star starter. "I say, 'If I was your height, I'd get a double-double every night.'"

Iverson understands Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin tend to pull down the ball a little easier and a lot more often than Anthony, who averages seven rebounds a game, "but tonight, he was just so aggressive. He wanted the ball more than everybody else."

Anthony said he just wanted to take advantage of the smaller defenders such as Raja Bell the Suns put on him and score some easy baskets early, "and the way I was going to do that was with offensive rebounding."

Seven of his rebounds came off the offensive glass.

Iverson led the Nuggets with 31 points and had 12 assists and no turnovers, teaming with Anthony Carter, who had 11 assists and just two turnovers, to lead a highly efficient Denver offense sparked by reserve J.R. Smith's 20 points.

All this firepower moved the Nuggets within one game of Golden State for the eighth and final spot in the rousing Western Conference playoff picture. Even at 36-24 (.600), the Nuggets remain on the outside looking in as they embark on a very imposing schedule this month.

"We're not going to play 22 great games. I would like to play like the Rockies down the stretch, but I doubt we're going to go 21-1 the rest of the way," Nuggets coach George Karl said, harkening to Colorado's unfathomable run-up to the World Series last October.

"In March, if we put double-digit wins up, we'll be OK. We'll still be in the hunt. It's one in 20 years, this type of thing. I've never seen it in the NBA, and every team is playing well."

Smith's long-range shooting helped the Nuggets build a second-quarter cushion and later helped put the Suns away. He sank six 3-pointers, two of them in a 16-0 run that Denver used to take control.

"Guys like Carmelo and A.I. are going to get theirs," Shaquille O'Neal said. "But when J.R. Smith comes out and shoots those wild shots that he was making, then they are a hard team to beat."

The Suns aren't the run-and-gun team they were with Shawn Marion, who was traded to Miami for Shaq last month, and they proved much easier for Denver to defend.

"I think tonight we did a heck of a job just getting back in transition, keeping them guys in front of us and keeping them off the 3-point line," Anthony said.

The last time these teams played, the Nuggets were incensed that the Suns ran up the score in a 137-115 blowout at US Airways Arena, a game in which Marion led Phoenix with 27 points and 14 boards.

"I just told the guys remember how they tried to embarrass us in Phoenix, and now we get another chance to do something about that," Iverson said. "We did tonight."

Amare Stoudemire led Phoenix with 22 points, and O'Neal grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds, but the Suns fell to 3-5 with the big man in the lineup.

Trailing 40-33 in the second quarter following a basket by Shaq, the Nuggets scored 16 straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Smith, to take a 49-40 lead they would never relinquish.

"We're going to need J.R. to play that way because he makes it so much easier for everybody else, for spacing the court out," Iverson said.

During their 4:44 scoreless stretch, the Suns starting to show the effects of arriving in Denver in the wee hours after winning at Portland on Tuesday night. They fell behind 60-46 after a series of Denver defensive stops and fastbreaks that left the Suns gasping and exasperated.

"They started making shots and making plays and we just didn't have the fight in us," Steve Nash said. "I think for us it is a matter of trying to figure it out. We don't want to go out and lose every game and be out of the playoff picture before we figure it out, but it's going to take us some time."

Game notes
Nuggets F Linas Kleiza played despite a sprained left foot that he aggravated in practice Monday and scored six points in 21 minutes. ... Shaq's previous season high for boards was 14.
