Trent Lawrence fires H&K G3 308 semi automatic rifle By LawrenceTrent This is a slow fire video of Trent Lawrence firing an H&K G3, semi-automatic 308 caliber rifle (7.62 NATO), at empty soda cans at approx 50 yards. Cans aren't clearly visible in this video but all shots were hits. The G3 is a fantastic rifle, and very reliable. However, it's not as accurate as other available 308 rifles such as the Springfield M1A, and recoil is heavy compared to more commonly deployed 223 rifles (5.56 NATO). The G3 (and H&K 91) are delayed roller blowback operated rifles, with fluted chambers. This differentiates the action of the the rifles from most others which are comparable, as it is not gas piston operated. The one overriding flaw (if it can be called such) is that the H&K G3/91 throws brass a LONG way and with great force, making it quite distracting to shooters and observers anywhere within 20 yards of the shooter's right side. 12.7 Anti-materiel Rifle Anti-materiel rifles are similar in form and appearance to modern sniper rifles and can often serve in that role, though they are usually chambered for cartridges more powerful than is normally required for neutralizing an enemy combatant and can operate at a greater range. In general, anti-materiel rifles are chambered for 12.7x99mm NATO (.50 BMG), 12.7x108mm Russian or even 14.5x114mm Russian and 20mm cartridges. The large cartridges are required to be able to fire projectiles containing usable payloads like explosives, armour-piercing cores, incendiaries, or combinations of these, as found in the Raufoss Mk211 projectile. Due to the considerable size and weight of anti-materiel rifles and other support equipment, sniper cells operating in 2- or 3-man teams or even more team members become a necessity. Sometimes snipers use anti-materiel rifles for shooting at human targets at longer ranges.
