Tameshigiri is the practice of test cutting tatami mats with the Japanese sword. Tatami are straw mats, wetted and tightly rolled to resemble the consistency and resistance of a human limb. (In early Japanese times, the preferred cutting targets for tameshigiri were condemned criminals and cadavers.)
