F-15 air combat training By zeoul001 The Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas) F-15 Eagle is an American-built all-weather tactical fighter designed to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat. It first flew in July 1972.A multimission avionics system includes a head-up display (HUD), advanced radar, inertial guidance system (INS), flight instruments, ultra high frequency (UHF) communications, and Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) and Instrument Landing System (ILS) receivers. It also has an internally mounted, tactical electronic-warfare system, "identification friend or foe" system, electronic countermeasures suite and a central digital computer. The head-up display projects, through a combiner, all essential flight information gathered by the integrated avionics system. This display, visible in any light condition, provides the pilot information necessary to track and destroy an enemy aircraft without having to look down at cockpit instruments.The F-15's versatile APG-63/70 Pulse-Doppler radar system can look up at high-flying targets and down at low-flying targets without being confused by ground clutter. It can detect and track aircraft and small high-speed targets at distances beyond visual range down to close range, and at altitudes down to treetop level. The radar feeds target information into the central computer for effective weapons delivery. For close-in dogfights, the radar automatically acquires enemy aircraft, and this information is projected on the head-up display. The F-15's electronic warfare system provides both threat warning and automatic countermeasures against selected threats. Because of the advanced electronics deployed on the F-15, the aircraft was given the nickname "Starship" by users.The Eagle can be armed with combinations of four different air-to-air weapons: AIM-7F/M Sparrow missiles or AIM-120 AMRAAM advanced medium range air-to-air missiles on its lower fuselage corners, AIM-9L/M Sidewinder or AIM-120 missiles on two pylons under the wings, and an internal 20 mm Gatling gun in the right wing root. It is the first US Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support (CAS) of ground forces. The official nickname comes from the P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a plane that was particularly effective at the CAS mission. However, the A-10 is more commonly known as Warthog or simply Hog. Message from Robert Pleming, Chief Executive VTST, 18th April 2008 The middle of April saw the safe completion of two further test flights, and the Compass Swing at RAF Cottesmore. Some snags were encountered, but that is the point of test flying -- to discover problems! Some of these snags were put right in between the two test flights, but the curtailment of the second flight because the starboard landing gear bay door would not close means that there will be at least one more test flight. We expect that this further flight will happen before the end of April, and therefore don't expect there to be any major impact on our plans to appear at airshows early in the summer. The media coverage of the test flights, especially on the BBC, has been huge, and significant confirmation of the continuing interest by the public at large in the Vulcan. Following the completion of the test flights, there will be an interlude of about a month, during which Marshall Aerospace and the CAA will be completing the final reviews and paperwork leading to the grant of the Permit to Fly. We will then be able to fly again, this time to practice how we will bring XH558 to airshows. The final step is to fly our airshow sequence in front of a CAA Display Examiner, who, if satisfied with its safety, will issue a Display Authorisation. We remain reliant on our supporters for the fund-raising momentum that will take us to the airshow season. We must keep it up -- and I am pleased to let you that because of the test flights, so far the momentum has not dropped.
