[View \| Download]	Lo chiamavano Bulldozer - Completo « -Salve, che cosa prende? -Una frittata. -Con una o due uova? -Dodici! -Ehm, dodici!? La... la vuole con le cipolle? -Ah... no: è troppo pesante! » (Locandiere e Bulldozer) Lo chiamavano Bulldozer è un film del 1978, diretto da Michele Lupo. Un marinaio solitario ed ex acclamatissima superstar del football americano soprannominato Bulldozer, ritiratosi improvvisamente dal mondo dello sport, è costretto a fermarsi nel porto di Livorno per un danno al motore del suo barcone. Qui, i militari del sergente Kempfer nella vicina base USA di Camp Darby fanno i prepotenti con i ragazzotti del paese, i quali stanno organizzando una squadra di football. I militari e i ragazzi non perdono occasione per affrontarsi, i primi usando i loro metodi maneschi, gli altri (seppure capaci di difendersi con i pugni) con i loro scherzi e dispetti. Per via del suo soggiorno forzato, Bulldozer si inserisce presto nella disputa quando, nel locale del porto, sfida e batte proprio Kempfer in una ricca scommessa a braccio di ferro, scatenando un'inevitabile rissa dalla quale si dilegua totalmente indisturbato. La forza e lo smacco rifilato al sergente attirano le simpatie dei ragazzi di paese, che subito gli organizzano una sorta di "imboscata" degli stessi americani in modo da far scoppiare una nuova rissa, certi che Bulldozer avrebbe di nuovo dato una sonora lezione non solo a Kempfer, ma anche al suo intero squadrone (cosa che effettivamente avviene). Il pezzo di ricambio per il motore della barca, un polverizzatore Thompson, è di proprietà del comando USA ed il sergente Kempfer, allenatore della sua squadra di football, impedisce a Bulldozer di averlo. La ripicca va ben oltre la sfida persa alla locanda: il sergente vuole vendicarsi di lui perché anni addietro gli ha fatto perdere tutti i risparmi che aveva scommesso su una partita, proprio quella che Bulldozer non giocò a causa del suo ritiro. I ragazzi, intanto, accettano una sfida con gli americani: una partita regolare di football, con tanto di premio (e ovviamente soldi) in palio; ai ragazzi non serve vincere l'intera partita, ma basterà fare un solo punto per aggiudicarsi la sfida. Scoperto il passato di campione di Bulldozer, gli chiedono di allenarli, ma questi nel frattempo è riuscito a trovare il pezzo di ricambio ed è ormai prossimo alla ripartenza, suscitando le lacrime dei ragazzi che vedono sfumare la vittoria e in più dovranno dire addio al loro amico. Quando l'addio sembra prossimo, Bulldozer salva Spitz, uno dei ragazzi, da alcuni picchiatori, lo porta con sé per curargli le ferite e gli racconta il motivo del suo inspiegabile ritiro dal football. Ma capisce anche quanto sia importante la sfida per Spitz e per i ragazzi e si convince finalmente a restare (tra l'altro, il polverizzatore di ricambio ricevuto è totalmente disastrato) e ad allenare duramente la squadretta. Quando Kempfer viene a sapere della cosa, prova a dimostrare un minimo di "fair play", regalando ai ragazzotti caschi, divise e protezioni per tutti, e dichiarando al suo nemico di essere contento che sia lui ad allenarli. I ragazzi, sicurissimi che il gesto sportivo di Kempfer sia solo una finta, ripagano lui e la squadra avversaria con uno dei loro soliti scherzi. La squadra è però scarna e priva sia di nozioni sia soprattutto di qualità fisiche; Bulldozer pensa così di aggiungere qualche rinforzo. Al team si aggregano Gerry, piccolo ladruncolo dotato di un atletismo formidabile, e il forzuto Orso, picchiatore di Spitz, in modo da garantire sia l'agilità sia la forza fisica che mancano agli altri. Spitz, però, non accetta per nessuna ragione l'ingresso di Orso, che l'aveva pestato a sangue poco tempo prima, tanto che abbandona la squadra per un po' e si rimette su una cattiva via, salvo poi ritornare ad allenarsi coi suoi amici. Arriva il giorno dell'attesissimo match; negli spogliatoi Bulldozer cerca di rassicurare i suoi giovani, visibilmente tesi e impauriti, e in qualche modo fa capire loro di essere ormai a tutti gli effetti un vero team (Spitz e Orso si sorridono, come veri compagni di squadra). Scesi in campo, gli americani giocano il primo tempo senza calcare troppo la mano, ma si ritrovano poi a fare un gioco estremamente duro, riducendo ben presto a pezzi il team di Bulldozer. Infastidito per l'eccessiva e immotivata violenza della squadra di Kempfer, dopo una discussione con lui negli spogliatoi dove il sergente mostra la sua solita spacconeria, Bulldozer indossa casco e uniforme e scende in campo come giocatore, mandando in visibilio gli spettatori e soprattutto i suoi ragazzi, che sembrano ritrovare di colpo tutta la loro energia. Sorpreso da questa mossa imprevista, Kempfer fa esattamente lo stesso, ma il campo è ormai completamente dominato dal ritorno del grande Bulldozer. [View \| Download]	Destiny's Child I've often heard the people of Gaza called "terrorists". It is the remit of the ignorant and lazy. This short film was made the day after the leader of the Islamic militant group, Hamas, was assassinated in Gaza in April of 2004. The idea was to murder a murderer, to exterminate a terrorist. What it did was create a whole new generation of 'terrorists'. Abdul Aziz al-Rantisi was known to me for nearly two years while I worked in Israel and the Occupied Territories. He was a paediatrician and a skilled leader, passionate about the plight of the people he lived with in one of the most over-populated strips of land in the world. >>No Chance<< The day after Rantissi was killed by an Apache helicopter I went to Gaza to report the events on the ground. The film you see was taken not from my cameraman's rushes but from my own mini-DV. It focuses on a six-year-old boy I met at Rantissi's graveside. He was carrying the flag of Hamas, and was chanting a song about his devotion to Rantissi and his willingness to become a shahid or martyr. He didn't look like a terrorist to me but he was growing up in a land under occupation. There are a lot of little terrorists in the Occupied Territories. Destiny's Child flies in the face of all who would automatically dub Palestinians 'terrorists'. It is my fervant belief that the children of Palestine are politicised almost as soon as they are old enough to speak. How could they not be? The constant presence of the Israeli military, coupled with the unrelenting cycle of despair is a breeding ground for young aspirants who see martyrdom as a glorious ascension. For every Palestinian killed there seem to be hundreds more willing to take their place. This boy is but a single reminder of the reality of life for children growing up in an occupation where martyrdom is a natural way-of-life and, ultimately, death. Hamas and other groups make it their business to ensure these children grow up with a romantic vision of what it is to lay down your life for your people and your country. Israel's occupation ensures Hamas stays in business. Throughout this film children are shown pelting Israeli tanks with stones while shouting "Allah Akhbar" (God is Great). You will hear gun shots fired at the children by Israeli soldiers who watch them through high powered binoculars. Three children were killed on the sand dunes where I filmed these scenes. All shot in either the head or neck by highly trained Israeli snipers in armoured personnel vehicles, simply for throwing stones. The Israeli army says the children are a "danger to personnel operating in the region". [View \| Download]	Lancaster My tribute to the Lancaster. I have used a mixture of old and new footage and of course I could not do a video about Lancaster's without showing 617 squadron the dam busters. The Lancaster originated from the twin-engined Manchester it was plagued by instability and problems with its complex, 24 cylinder Rolls Royce Vulture engines. Of the 202 Manchester's built more were lost to engine failure than enemy action. The aircraft's designer, Roy Chadwick, realized that the aircraft had serious shortcomings and made plans for its modification. He added twelve feet to the wingspan and replaced the two troublesome Vulture engines with four of the proven Rolls Royce Merlin's V-12's and the result was the Lancaster which made its maiden flight in January, 1941 and it first flew operationally in March 1942 and was well liked by its crews. The Rolls Royce Merlin engines were much in demand for many types of aircraft. For this reason a version of the aircraft was produced which made use of Bristol Hercules radial engines. During World War II the Lancaster was the most successful bomber used by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force.The Lanc had speed, ceiling, and lifting power that no other aircraft of the day could match. Weighing 36,900 pounds empty, the Lancaster was capable of taking off with an additional 33,100 pounds of fuel and bombs; in other words it could almost carry its own weight again.The Lanc's massive bomb bay stretched for 33 feet and, unlike other bombers, was one continuous uninterrupted space. Partly for this reason, the Lanc had the versatility to undertake raids with large, specialized weapons. The "Grand Slam", a 22,000 pound special purpose bomb designed to penetrate concrete and explode below the surface to create an earthquake effect, could only be delivered by the Lancaster and the Lancaster was thus chosen for special operations such as the "Dambusters" raid and the attack which sunk the German Battleship Tirpitz. Of the total of 7377 Lancaster's built (430 of them in Canada), 3932 were lost in action. During the war Lancaster's flew a total of 156 308 sorties and dropped 608,612 tons of bombs, and placed over 12,000 mines in enemy waters. The RAF continued to use the aircraft in various roles including photographic and maritime duties until October 1956. The Royal Canadian Air Force, continued to use the aircraft in photographic and maritime reconnaissance roles until the early 1960's. The last three RCAF Lancaster's were retired at a ceremony on April 1, 1964. Marshall of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur T. Harris,wartime chief of Bomber Command wrote his own tribute to the aircraft. "The finest bomber of the war! Its efficiency was almost incredible, both in performance And in the way it could be saddled with ever-increasing loads without breaking the camel's back. The Lancaster far surpassed all the other types of heavy bombers. Not only could it take heavier bomb loads, not only was it easier to handle, And not only were there fewer accidents than with other types, The casualty rate was also consistently below those of other types." "The Lancaster took the major part in winning the war with its attacks on Germany. On land it forced the Germans to retrieve from their armies half their sorely needed Anti-tank guns for use by over a million soldiers who would otherwise have been serving in the field. The Lancaster won the naval war by destroying over one-third of the German submarines in their ports, Together with hundreds of small naval craft and six of their largest warships. Above all, the Lancaster won the air war by taking the major part in forcing Germany to concentrate On building and using fighters to defend the Fatherland, thereby depriving their armies of Essential air and particularly bomber support." It excelled in many other roles including daylight precision bombing, and gained worldwide renown as the "Dam Buster" used in the 1943 Operation Chastise raids on Germany's Ruhr Valley dams.
