Der Grenzwert für Fluorid in der Trinkwasser-VO beträgt 1,5 mg/l. (...) Weniger als 1% des im Trinkwasser enthaltenen Fluorids wäre prophylaktisch wirksam. Mehr als 99% würden unmittelbar mit dem Abwasser in die Umwelt entlassen. Eine solche zusätzliche Emission von Fluoriden in die Gewässer ist aus ökologischen Gründen abzulehnen. Toxikologie von Fluor Elementares Fluor ist für den Menschen ein starkes Gift, das ausschließlich schädliche Wirkung hat. Klinische Zeichen einer akuten Intoxikation sind u.a. Übelkeit, Erbrechen, Kopfschmerzen, Schwäche, Muskelkrämpfe, Herzinsuffizienz und Koma. Fluorid ist ein kumulatives Toxin: Bei Erwachsenen kann es bei einer lang dauernden, übermäßigen Fluoridzufuhr von mehr als 8 mg/Tag zu einer chronischen Fluorvergiftung (Fluorose) kommen. Bei Kindern besteht die Gefahr der Fluorose bereits ab 2 mg Fluor/Tag. Durch eine übermäßige Fluorzufuhr kann es zu einer Dentalfluorose (Zahnschmelzverän- derung) in Form von kreideweißen, gelblichen oder braunen Flecken und zu einer Sklerosierung (Verhärtung) der Knochen sowie Verkalkung von Muskel- und Sehnenansätzen kommen, die zu einer Einschränkung der Beweglichkeit führt. Bei Nierenerkrankungen ist auf Grund der eingeschränkten Nierenfunktion die Entwicklung einer Fluorose beschleunigt.
