BEOWULF: Hurdy-Gurdy & Theremin By copperleaves This is a short excerpt from the 8th century epic tale of BEOWULF. The instrument I am using to accompany myself is called a hurdy-gurdy , a popular instrument of medieval Europe. The hurdy-gurdy in this video was made for me by Alden and Cali Hackmann of Olympic Musical Instruments in Indianola, Washington, and is a fully equipped electro-acoustic instrument with a built-in sound console. Hurdy-gurdy players, like bagpipe players, cannot control the volume of their instruments which makes it difficult to use for accompanying the human voice but the intensity and sheer volume of the instrument also made it ideal for great halls and public places in ancient times. One advantage that it has is that it is a complete instrument, able to play melody, harmony and rhythm. The hurdy-gurdy in this video is plugged into an RSP Technologies Intelliverb processor which I control with a MIDI Ground Control foot switch. The only other instrument used in this video is a Moog Ethervox theremin. The original Beowulf epic was written in Old English which is no longer spoken and cannot be understood by English speakers today. I used a modern adaptation of the words for this video. For anyone who is interested, I have posted the text to my website, along with some closeup photos of the hurdy-gurdy. Beowulf analisis By locosporelpodcast Descubre más análisis en nuestro podcast mensual de videjuegos: Sensession Radio, en http://www.locosporelpodcast.com Beowulf, el juego basado en la nueva película de animación de Robert Zemeckis, basada en la obra literaria homónima llevada al cine varias veces, nos presenta a un guerrero cuyos logros, superación y enfrentamientos extremos están a la orden del día. Beowulf, un héroe dispuesto a liberar a su pueblo de la bestia Graendel, de su madre y de otras criaturas. Y es que en este juego de acción a lo hack'n slash, que a veces resulta incluso más violento que God of War, nos ofrece algunas de las situaciones vistas en el film así como otras extraídas de esta destacada obra literaria. Beowulf se propondrá liberar sus tierras de distintos enemigos, ya sean guerreros, monstruos mitológicos o mágicos. En su aventura, Beowulf no estará solo, pues gracias a nuestras hazañas logradas, más guerreros se unirán a nuestra causa confiando ciegamente en nosotros. A estos guerreros Beowulf les llama barones y también podremos darles 4 órdenes básicas, que van desde seguirnos y cubrirnos, hasta desplazar objetos, por ejemplo. En este último caso, los barones moverán objetos con bastante calma, resultando una espera demasiado eterna para el jugador. Durante el camino podremos cambiar nuestra arma blanca por otras que encontraremos por el camino y aprenderemos nuevos combos. En enemigos finales será esencial el utilizar el poder carnal, una ira desatada que nos hace temporalmente mucho más fuertes. Este poder será fundamental para disminuir su barra de vida, acabando con ellos finalmente si completamos con acierto la secuencia de botones a pulsar. Los mini-juegos también presentes en forma de cánticos u órdenes para remar, pues deberemos presionar un botón u otro al estilo Dance-Dance Revolution, presionando el botón en el momento preciso. Aunque en un principio parece que el juego promete bastante, es uno de esos títulos que no llega a convertirse en juegazo debido a fallos que podían haberse subsanado: cambios bruscos del tempo de los ataques, conversaciones y diálogos poco interactivos, minijuegos tediosos a veces, enemigos bastante torpes, cierta lentitud de movimientos, etc. El apartado gráfico ofrece una notable ambientación, sobre todo con ciertos espacios y enemigos; en general se trata del aspecto más destacable del juego. Respecto al doblaje, este es bueno, pero las voces se solapan a veces unas con otras, sobre todo en el tutorial, donde este fallo resulta más evidente. Beowulf el videojuego, es interesante, aunque no llega a ser tan destacable como otros títulos del género.
