Robert Enke (born August 24, 1977 in Jena, † 10 November 2009 in Neustadt am Rübenberge) was a german footballer. He played from 2004 and 2009 at Hanover. Enkes Karriere begann bei Jenapharm Jena, bevor er 1985 zum FC Carl Zeiss Jena ging. 1995 schaffte er den Sprung in den Profikader der 2. Bundesliga, wo er jedoch nur drei Spiele unter Trainer Eberhard Vogel absolvierte. Sein Debüt als Profi hatte er November 1995 gegen seinen späteren Klub Hannover 96. 1996 wechselte Enke in die 1. Bundesliga zu Borussia Mönchengladbach. Dort verbrachte er zunächst zwei Jahre auf der Ersatzbank, bevor er in der Saison 1998/99 unter Friedel Rausch zum Stammtorhüter wurde und diese Position auch unter dessen Nachfolger Rainer Bonhof beibehielt. Enke brachte konstant gute Leistungen, konnte aber letztlich Mönchengladbachs Abstieg in die Zweite Liga nicht verhindern. Im Sommer 1999 wechselte Enke nach Portugal zu Benfica Lissabon. Unter dem deutschen Trainer Jupp Heynckes wurde er Leistungsträger und schließlich Mannschaftskapitän. Der Lissaboner Traditionsclub erreichte allerdings in den folgenden drei Spielzeiten nur mittelmäßige Ergebnisse. Enke wechselte daher 2002 nach Spanien in die Primera División zum FC Barcelona. Hier erlitt er jedoch einen Karriereknick und kam nur zu einem einzigen Einsatz. Ein Ausleihgeschäft im Sommer 2003 in die Türkei zu Fenerbahçe Istanbul mit Trainer Christoph Daum wurde zu einem Desaster. Enkes erstes Spiel ging verloren und die eigenen Fans bewarfen ihn mit Gegenständen, woraufhin er seinen Vertrag auflöste und vorübergehend erwerbslos wurde. Formal immer noch bei Barcelona unter Vertrag, ließ sich Enke im Januar 2004 in die spanische Zweite Liga nach CD Teneriffa ausleihen, wo er wieder sportlich überzeugte. Enke kehrte im Sommer 2004 mit seinem Wechsel zu Hannover 96 in die Bundesliga zurück. Von Beginn an wurde er zu einem Leistungsträger der Mannschaft und ist seitdem mehrfach im Rahmen von Umfragen des Fachmagazins Kicker von den Bundesligaspielern zum besten Torwart gewählt worden. Seit 2007 fungierte Enke auch als Mannschaftskapitän von Hannover 96. Erstmals hatte er einen Profivertrag in seiner Karriere verlängert und war damit noch bis 2010 an Hannover gebunden. Seine Leistungen wurden immer beindruckender, so dass er logischerweise Nationaltorwart wurde. Nach Jürgen Klinsmann mit Jens Lehmann kam Jogi Löw, der Enke zu seiner Nummer 1 machte.
