Fue pintada por el genial artista sevillano en 1656, según Antonio Palomino, fecha bastante razonable si tenemos en cuenta que la infanta Margarita nació el 12 de julio de 1651 y aparenta unos cinco años de edad. Sin embargo, Velázquez aparece con la Cruz de la Orden de Santiago en su pecho, honor que consiguió en 1659. La mayoría de los expertos coinciden en que la cruz fue pintada por el artista cuando recibió la distinción, apuntándose incluso a que fue el propio Felipe IV quien lo hizo.
