Destaca la variedad y espectacularidad de sus técnicas de patada, y actualmente es una de las artes marciales más conocidas. Es un arte marcial moderno, con poco más de 50 años de antigüedad. En este evento participaron 183 atletas (120 hombres y 63 mujeres) de 34 países diferentes en 8 diferentes divisiones de peso tanto para hombres como para mujeres. En los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 92 volvió a tener presencia como deporte de exhibición.
