Fusion Hip Hop Dance Competition FUSION X: Creative Rebellion April 19th, 2009 On Sunday, April 19th, 2009, UC San Diego's Multi-Asian Student Association (MASA) and 220 Second to None dance team, will once again join forces to host FUSION, the largest hip hop dance competition in the West Coast. With this being our 10th year anniversary, FUSION will unite highly talented dancers of all ages and ethnicities from across the country to celebrate music through various dance styles and cultural exhibitions. This year's theme, "Creative Rebellion," will showcase the very essence of how hip hop music was brought to the forefront. It has grown to be an international phenomenon, and the mission of FUSION is to enlighten everyone of its impact outside the borders of the United States. In addition, young Asian-Americans are becoming increasingly prominent in their own Creative Rebellion, as more and more are being recognized in dance, music, and film. With these in mind, MASA and 220 strive to promote cultural awareness in the hip hop community. Since its inception in 1999, attendance to this event has increased about 400% as FUSION is now the largest student-run and Asian-directed event at UCSD. FUSION has long been an avenue for many of today's most popular crews, including Kaba Modern & Team Millennia. Last year, with the culture's ever-growing popularity, FUSION hit a record-breaking audience of over 3,000 attendees, and sold out the tickets days before the show date. With the first ever "Event Of The Year" from the Annual V-ENT Dance Awards under its belt, and a current nomination for the second year in a row, FUSION is forecasting to grow even larger. The event showcases performers from all over the nation and has viewers across the globe. Arranged by the efforts solely of college students, the success of FUSION rests on the diligence and determination of MASA and 220. Maya Pedal Asociación, San Andrés Itzapa, Guatemala In 1997, in San Andrés Itzapa in Guatemala, Maya Pedal Association began recycling scraps of bicycles into Bicimáquinas. Bicimáquinas are pedal-powered blenders, washing machines and threshing machines, eliminating the need for fuel and electricity. Pumps are also possible, and are capable of extracting 30 liters of water per minute from 30-meter deep wells (electronic pumps reach just to 12 meters). The idea of these ingenious contraptions emerged from the desire to help the farming families of the San Andrés community. The issue that gave rise to Maya Pedal was the expense and shortage of electricity and fuel in the village. Carlos and Cesar, creators of Maya Pedal, have achieved an extraordinary result: a worthy project that does not pollute and is extremely fascinating in its involvement of volunteers from around the world who are building a fantastic pedal revolution.
