Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo: Los abscesos cutáneos son bastante comunes. Se presentan cuando una infección provoca la acumulación de pus y de material infectado en la piel. Los abscesos cutáneos se pueden presentar después de: Una infección bacteriana (a menudo estafilococo) - Una herida o lesión menor -Forúnculos -Foliculitis Los abscesos cutáneos pueden aparecer en cualquier lugar del cuerpo y afectan a personas de todas las edades. Síntomas :En algunos casos, puede ocurrir fiebre o escalofrío,Hinchazón localizada, induración (endurecimiento del tejido) Lesión cutánea úlcera abierta o cerrada, nódulo abultado,enrojecida puede presentarse drenaje de líquido Área afectada sensible y caliente Signos y exámenes:El médico puede hacer el diagnóstico con base en la apariencia del área afectada. Un cultivo y un análisis de cualquier drenaje de la lesión pueden ayudar a identificar el organismo causal. Tratamiento:El objetivo del tratamiento es la curación de la infección. El médico puede cortar y drenar el absceso para limpiar el área afectada y controlar la infección. Igualmente, se suministran antibióticos por vía oral para controlar la infección. El calor (por ejemplo, compresas tibias) puede acelerar la curación, reducir la inflamación y hacer que el área se sienta mejor. Eleve la parte afectada para reducir la hinchazón y la inflamación. Expectativas (pronóstico):a mayoría de los abscesos cutáneos son curables con el tratamiento adecuado. Complicaciones:Obstaculización del funcionamiento apropiado de los tejidos cercanos Diseminación de la infección alrededor de la misma área o por todo el cuerpo Diseminación de la infección a través del torrente sanguíneo, ocasionando:formación de abscesos en las articulaciones u otros lugares,Endocarditis Muchos abscesos nuevos ("siembra" de la infección) Osteomielitis,Muerte tisular (gangrena) Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:Solicite una cita con médico si tiene cualquier signo de infección cutánea, como:Drenaje de cualquier clase,Fiebre,Dolor, Enrojecimiento,Hinchazón. También solicite una cita si aparecen nuevos síntomas durante o después del tratamiento del absceso de piel. Prevención:Prevenga y tenga cuidado con las infecciones bacterianas. Mantenga limpia y seca la piel que circunda las heridas menores. Consulte con el médico si desarrolla signos de infección y trate las infecciones pequeñas oportunamente. An abscess (Latin: abscessus) is a collection of pus (dead neutrophils) that has accumulated in a cavity formed by the tissue on the basis of an infectious process (usually caused by bacteria or parasites) or other foreign materials (e.g. splinters, bullet wounds, or injecting needles). It is a defensive reaction of the tissue to prevent the spread of infectious materials to other parts of the body. The organisms or foreign materials kill the local cells, resulting in the release of cytokines. The cytokines trigger an inflammatory response, which draws large numbers of white blood cells to the area and increases the regional blood flow. The final structure of the abscess is an abscess wall, or capsule, that is formed by the adjacent healthy cells in an attempt to keep the pus from infecting neighboring structures. However, such encapsulation tends to prevent immune cells from attacking bacteria in the pus, or from reaching the causative organism or foreign object. Abscesses must be differentiated from empyemas, which are accumulations of pus in a preexisting rather than a newly formed anatomical cavity. The abscess should be inspected to identify if foreign objects are a cause, which may require their removal. If foreign objects are not the cause, a doctor will incise and drain the abscess and prescribe painkillers and possibly antibiotics.[2] Surgical drainage of the abscess (e.g. lancing) is usually indicated once the abscess has developed from a harder serous inflammation to a softer pus stage. This is expressed in the Latin medical aphorism: Ubi pus, ibi evacua. In critical areas where surgery presents a high risk, it may be delayed or used as a last resort. The drainage of a lung abscess may be performed by positioning the patient in a way that enables the contents to be discharged via the respiratory tract. Warm compresses and elevation of the limb may be beneficial for a skin abscess.
