It was designed for the Soviet space program as a replacement for the Myasishchev M-4 'Bison' for the purpose of carrying the Energia rocket boosters and to also be able to carry the Buran space shuttle in piggy-back mode much the same as the American Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.The An-225 first flew on 21 December, 1988. Only one An-225 is currently in service. It is commercially available for carrying ultra heavy and/or oversize freight. It can carry up to 227 metric tons (250 short tons) of cargo. A second An-225 was partially built in connection with the Soviet space program but was never finished. This unit is finally nearing completion as of 2005. The construction of further units will depend upon demand for oversize cargolifting.At 600 metric tons, the An-225 is the world's heaviest aircraft, although its wingspan is less than that of the "Spruce Goose", Howard Hughes' flying boat, which never flew more a single, short, low-altitude test flight. Both the An-124 and An-225 are larger than the C-5 Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the U.S. inventory. The An-225 is also larger than the Airbus A380. The pilot missed the runway and landed in the grass, doing extensive damage to the aircraft. He was able to fly some 40 miles to Birmingham, where the incident was caught on video by the West Midlands Police helicopter. EADS North America is progressing in discussions with potential U.S. partners to build a winning team in order to provide the most capable, best value solution to the Air Force. The KC-45 is the only aircraft flying today that meets the U.S. Air Forces tanker requirements as outlined in its KC-X Request for Proposal (RFP). The KC-45 builds on the EADS-based tanker that was previously selected in 2008 by the Department of Defense and that has won the last five consecutive tanker competitions worldwide. We will offer a modern, more capable tanker in response to the Defense Departments decision to encourage competition for this major taxpayer investment, said EADS North America Chairman Ralph D. Crosby, Jr. Our KC-45 is the only real, flying, low-risk solution that today meets the demanding Air Force air refueling requirements and is actually in production now. That fact is critical because our warfighters deserve a true best value solution. EADS North America will build and modify the KC-45, along with A330 commercial freighters, at an EADS North America/Airbus production facility to be constructed in Mobile, Alabama. The KC-45 program and aircraft production/modification center will create and support tens of thousands of high-value American jobs while making a long-term investment in the nations economy at a time when other aerospace companies are outsourcing production overseas. This tanker competition is all about the warfighter and the aircraft that most successfully meets their requirements. The KC-45 offers what the Air Force needs today: a modern military tanker that is in production now with deliveries beginning this year, said Sean OKeefe, EADS North America Chief Executive Officer. Not only does the KC-45 offer the best value and a huge capability advantage over the competition, it also will support tens of thousands of jobs across America by expanding our nations industrial aerospace capacity. The KC-45 is the U.S. military version of the proven A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT). To date 28 aircraft have been ordered by four U.S. allies. The MRTT has transferred more than 265,000 lbs. of fuel to a range of military aircraft from F-16 and F/A-18 fighters to the E-3 AWACS using the same refueling systems offered on the KC-45. Our aircraft has demonstrated its unparalleled capability by refueling a variety of military aircraft utilizing both boom and hose and drogue systems, as well as by operating in the receiving position. Thats a statement our competition cant make, said Crosby. The Royal Australian Air Force will receive the first A330 MRTTs later this year. Additional aircraft are in production or undergoing mission-equipment outfitting for the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Were progressing forward in discussions to expand the ranks of our nearly 200 current U.S. suppliers, some of which are joining us for todays announcement, continued OKeefe. At the heart of the KC-45 is the most capable aerial refueling system operating today. The aircrafts fly-by-wire Aerial Refueling Boom System (ARBS) has a demonstrated fuel offload rate of 1,200 U.S. gallons per minute the only system which meets the U.S. Air Forces requirements without further modification. The systems proven all-electric fly-by-wire technology ensures enhanced controllability and safety that greatly aids the boom operator and receiver aircraft's pilot. The KC-45 also carries an all-digital hose and drogue system for probe-equipped aircraft. The under-wing refueling pods are the most modern in service today, with the capability to deliver up to 420 gallons of fuel per minute through 90-ft.-long hoses at refueling speeds from 180 to 325 knots. The KC-45 will also feature a modern fuselage refueling unit, common with that of allied MRTT users such as the United Kingdom. The 787 has won approximately 840 orders to date, which, despite some cancellations, is a record for a commercial aircraft at launch: -Tuesday's maiden flight allows Boeing ( BA - news - people ) to bolster the confidence of customers, halt the drift of orders to the forthcoming Airbus A350 and get the program back on track after a two-year delay. --However, with a demanding twelve months of testing ahead involving an aircraft that features innovative large-scale composite material structures, the pressure on the company to deliver is set to increase. The most significant question is whether Boeing can meet the exceptionally ambitious monthly production targets it has set for itself; if not, the company faces further program losses and may sacrifice its current competitive advantage over Airbus. Airbus catch-up? The repeated delays have given Airbus an opportunity to regain ground that it lost to Boeing in wide-body aircraft market. Airbus's cash flow and focus on the A350 have both been disrupted by chronic production problems with its A380 superjumbo airliner. Deliveries lag last year's total, and delivery targets for 2010 have been reduced. Deferrals and cancellations have eaten into EADS's cash reserves, affecting its ability to finance the A350XWB. Boeing response. Boeing appears to have not learned from its rival's troubles, so the 787 is likely to encounter the same chronic production problems that still bedevil the A380--its heavy composite material use does take the 787 into relatively uncharted territory as far as large-scale mass civil aircraft production is concerned. Therefore, it is conceivable that there could be further setbacks in Boeing's exceptionally demanding testing and production schedule. 787 prospects. Yet prospects for the 787 remain very bright. Even if he aircraft is less advanced than the A350XWB, It promises lots of improvements in fuel burn and general emissions reduction that will make it the most environmentally friendly airliner until the A350XWB enters in service at least two years after the Delay Liner. Riding out recession. Boeing and Airbus both expect a fall in demand in 2010 due to the deep airline industry recession. In the longer term, Boeing still predicts a global market for 29,000 airliners worth $3.2 trillion, over the next 20 years--an estimate that appears credible. Boeing has ridden out the recession and credit crisis relatively smoothly thants to Gov´s Loans to their costumers: The company benefits from liquidity support from the U.S. export credit agency, the Export-Import Bank, accounting for nearly 40% of the bank's $21 billion in business last year. This support is a major prop for the company in its battle with Airbus, which has similar backing from three national credit agencies. Good competition ahead. [View \| Download]	A380 EMERGENCY EVACUATION TEST Airbus successfully completed the passenger evacuation trial on development A380 MSN7, paving the way for the Authorities to certify the aircraft in time for delivery by the end of 2006. During the trial, all of the 873 participants were able to leave the aircraft and reach ground within the 90 seconds prescribed, with half of the 16 doors in operations. The trial was performed under the supervision of the European Aviation and Safety Agency EASA and a representation of the American FAA. One passenger suffered a broken leg and there were some minor injuries.
