Has history been tampered with? Troy=Constantinople=Jerusalem-Trojan War=First Crusade Has history been tampered with? Homer's "Iliad" tells the tale of the First Crusade. When we think of Homer's Troy, we imagine it in fantasy hues of times long gone. And yet the latest research conducted of one of the world's leading mathematicians proves it to us irrefutably: what we know as the "Trojan War" was in fact the First Crusade! CLICK ON AMAZON.COM LINK! We aren't talking about obvious parallels between two major military campaigns separated by millennia - the Trojan War and the First Crusade are but different names of one and the same military campaign. The former ended up in the distant past due to the blatantly erroneous chronology that we use - one that was created by the Jesuits in the 16th 17th century. This chronology, regarded by many as the absolute historical truth, contains many gaps and repetitions. Most major historical events (as well as personalities and even places) have several phantom duplicates arbitrarily dated to various antediluvian epochs and presumed completely unrelated to one another - the Trojan War and the First Crusade are a perfect example. Our entire view of the so-called "Antiquity" and the Middle Ages changes radically; history becomes streamlined and unencumbered by all the dark ages, lost empires and mystical cyclic patterns that afflict the official version. The duplicates all roll into a single historical reality - Classical Greek poleis become one with the mediaeval Crusader states, ancient Egyptian paganism identifies as Coptic Christianity, and historical Troy, Constantinople and Jerusalem turn out to be the same city on the Bosporus, which we know as Istanbul. The city in Palestine known as Jerusalem today remained a nondescript Arabic settlement called El-Kuds until the 18th century. There isn't a single Crusader map in existence that would locate Jerusalem in Palestine (or indeed give us any detailed information about that region) - unlike modern historians, mediaeval cartographers knew the location of the Holy Land perfectly well. Sounds absurd? Not if you have read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Professor Anatoly Fomenko - a brilliant mathematician and a true scientist to the core - unconfined by dogmatic thinking and determined to get to the bare historical truth at any cost. "History: Fiction or Science?" - Challenge to traditional history. Is it possible that Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were invented during Renaissance? Can it be that Jesus Christ was born in 1053 AD and crucified in 1086 AD? Scientific research points to the evidence that many modern beliefs of traditional history are a sham. "History: Fiction or Science?" by the eminent mathematician Anatoly Fomenko and his colleagues crowns 30 years of meticulous and extensive research. It is the first volume in seven comprising a "Chronology" that exposes numerous questionable notions of traditional history. "History: Fiction or Science?" describes how the contemporary chronological scale was created and by whom, with the culprits named as the 16th 17th century clergy. The well-known model of history has enjoyed the relentless attention of prominent critics ever since its creation including respected people like Sir Isaac Newton and Jean Hardouin, the court librarian of Louis XIV, the Sun King of France. Anatoly Fomenko dissects every historical age scrupulously and analyzes the data from every angle imaginable. Roman and Egyptian chronology take a good beating. Poggio Bracciolini and Petrarch take the blame for creating the beautiful legend of a mythical Classical age that never was. The Biblical events are brought a lot closer to us both historically and geographically. The Biblical Jerusalem is actually the medieval city of Constantinople. The New and the Old Testament swap their positions in chronological order and are shown to refer to medieval events. Using astronomy and statistics to back his theories, Fomenko delivers an abundant astronomical proof showing that the identified dates of 'ancient' eclipses are blatantly untrue. Fomenko explains the confusion between the Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and how the division between the two is merely imaginary. The book contains in-depth descriptions of the research methods used as well as the most meticulous rendition of the global chronological map with its numerous errors and glitches explained in a very level-headed manner. One doesn't have to be a mathematician to comprehend Fomenko's presentation. "History: Fiction or Science?" transforms history from fiction into a rocket science. It is a must read for everyone who isn't entirely indifferent to human history and possibly also for those who are. Shortage of Nurses Is Worldwide, but Worst in Poorer Nations This is the VOA Special English Development Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish The health care industry needs more nurses. All areas of the world face a nursing shortage. But the shortage is most severe in developing countries. Many of their nurses leave. They move to more developed nations for better pay, better working conditions and better chances for career development.A World Bank report earlier this year called attention to the problem. For example, nearly two thousand nurses left the Caribbean between two thousand two and two thousand six. Caribbean nations currently have about one nurse for every one thousand people. The ratio of nurses to population is about ten times higher in the United States and countries in the European Union. Currently, more than twenty-one thousand nurses who trained in the Caribbean are working in the United States, Canada and Britain.Gaetan Lafortune is with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris. He says the nursing shortage also affects industrialized countries. Mr. Lafortune says a large number of nurses are expected to retire within the next ten years. At the same time, the health care needs of aging populations are expected to grow, intensifying the shortage of nurses. He says some researchers in the United States have projected that there may be a shortage of close to a million nurses by two thousand twenty. The United States is one of thirty-one countries in the O.E.C.D. Gaetan Lafortune says in recent years many of the countries increased their efforts to hire foreign nurses. But he says this has raised concern that O.E.C.D. countries were mainly exporting their shortage problem to countries that may have an even greater need for these nurses. In May, the World Health Assembly approved a global code of practice on the international recruitment of health workers. The assembly is made up of countries in the World Health Organization. The code advises against actively recruiting health workers from developing countries that face severe shortages. The world also faces a shortage of nursing trainers. As a result, nursing schools are forced to turn away qualified students. And that's the VOA Special English Development Report. You can find transcripts, MP3s and podcasts of our reports at voaspecialenglish.com. What are your thoughts about the nursing shortage and what should be done about it? How to Make Your Own Solar Water Heater This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Solar water heaters are used around the world and are not very difficult to build. The system we are going to describe is based on a design developed some years ago in Afghanistan. Since then, it has been built and used in many countries. It can heat seventy liters of water to sixty degrees Celsius. It can do this between sunrise and noon on a clear day with an average air temperature of thirty-two degrees Celsius. There are two parts to the solar water heater. One part is made of a sheet of metal painted black. Black surfaces become hotter in the sun than surfaces painted any other color. This black metal plate is called a collector. The collector is placed in contact with the water. There are several kinds of metal sheets that can be used for the collector. Corrugated metal will work very well. Corrugated sheets are often used as roofs on housing.Once the water is heated, it is kept hot with insulation material. This allows the water to stay warm for a long time. The second part of the solar water heater holds the water for the system. This storage tank can be a container that holds about one hundred liters. Two rubber pipes are attached to the water storage tank. One pipe lets water flow into the system. The other lets water flow out. When the water heater is working correctly, water will flow from the storage tank to the collector and back again. You can use the hot water at the top of the tank for washing and cleaning. You can change the flow of water so that the temperature is hot or warm as desired. This solar water heater is easy to build and operate. It will last about two years before the rubber pipes need to be replaced. There is also something else you will need to make the solar water heater work -- the sun. As you might expect, the heater will heat water only on sunny days. You can get more information about solar water heaters and other projects from EnterpriseWorks/VITA. This group works internationally to fight poverty. The website is enterpriseworks.org. What Do You Know About the Common Cold? This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Do you think getting cold can give you a cold? Is it bad to drink milk when you have a cold? Can chicken soup cure a cold? Ranit Mishori is a family medicine doctor at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington. She says colds are more common in winter, but not because of low temperatures. The cold weather just means people stay inside more, often with other people. "And the way the common cold virus is transmitted from one person to another is through handshakes, through sneezing, or through coughing on one another." Adults generally get two to three colds a year. Children are likely to catch four or five. Dr. Mishori says some people mistakenly believe they can become resistant to colds. She says, "There are about two hundred different viruses that cause the common cold. People think that once you get infected one time you develop immunity for the rest of your life. This is wrong."There is still no cure for the common cold. But Dr. Mishori says there are ways to feel better sooner. "So if you catch a cold and on day one you start taking about two grams of vitamin C a day, there is evidence you might shorten the number of days that you will be suffering with these symptoms." She says honey can also help. There is evidence that it can shorten the length of the common cold sometimes even by two to three days. She says honey seems to be especially effective in children with colds. But the Agriculture Department says never to feed honey to babies less than one year old. It says even honey in prepared foods may contain substances that can make babies very sick. Some people believe in treating a cold with chicken soup. Does it work? Dr. Mishori says, "Chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties, so it helps reduce the duration but also it helps clear the mucus." Mucus is the sticky substance that can make you cough and have trouble breathing during a cold. Have you ever heard the old saying "feed a cold, starve a fever"? Dr. Mishori says this is not necessarily a good guideline to follow. She says if you have a cold but do not feel hungry, then don't eat. "But you have to drink a lot and you can drink water or tea -- anything that gets fluids into your body. That's very important." But what about drinking milk during a cold? Some people think it only causes more mucus. Dr. Mishori says yes and no. Dairy products do not cause increased mucus, she says, but they can thicken the mucus. She says, "It's possible that discomfort is somewhat more enhanced when you drink milk. But obviously, if you're a baby and that's all you drink, you should not stop giving babies milk." Rooster Crowing in the Morning 3D Pearl white leghorn rooster crows in the morning. The British call roosters "cockrills." What is a rooster called in your native language or slang? He looks like a real-life Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. The chicken which appears in the end was his main hen. The sound is all natural. In fact, this video was uploaded as-is, the shots were back-to-back in the camera, so it's original and in-camera-cut. The rooster didn't notice me, I shot him while looking through the bedroom window doing his daily crow in the morning. He was beautiful. Video taken with a fun predecessor to the Kodak PlaySport which produces awesome video for such a tiny, well-built, all-weather gadget. Click to view 3D version on bottom right of video frame. Dallas Creates a Public School for Boys This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Girls and boys usually attend classes together in American public schools. But there are some single-sex programs, like a girls public school in Dallas, Texas. It opened in two thousand four. The students have done well enough that the school system is now opening a school for boys.Nakia Douglas is principal of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. He says he was the kind of student that the school is seeking. "I was born and raised in south Dallas by a single parent. I was a neighborhood child. I was that child that -- I would work if I knew the teacher believed in me. But, at the same time, I had a hunger and desire for more."Educational researchers say boys learn in different ways and mature more slowly than girls, and are more likely to leave school. Being in class with the opposite sex can also take attention away from learning. Kendall Keeter thinks the boys school will be good for his son the way the girls school was for his daughter. "Our thought was to also give our son an opportunity that would best prepare him for college in the same manner she was prepared, and I can't imagine any other option that would have prepared her better."Another parent, Madeline Hayes, also likes the idea of a publicly funded school for boys. "This is something, as cheesy as it sounds, that I've always dreamed about, that there will be a boys school that doesn't charge twenty-five thousand dollars a year, but would give the same academics, the same level of interaction and leadership."The school is for grades six through nine. It will offer college preparatory classes and leadership courses even on weekends. Principal Douglas says the boys will be urged to support one another. "All of our young men we call 'brother.' So it may be Brother Malyk Davis or Brother Samuel Keeter. The young men understand they are their brother's keeper. And so the young men are really learning to be responsible not only for themselves, but also for their brothers here at the campus."Most students who want to be accepted into the Obama Academy in Dallas will need to have good grades and pass a number of tests. But ten to fifteen percent will not have to meet all of the entrance requirements. Principal Nakia Douglas says they will have to show they have a strong character and a desire to learn. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. NEEM - A Tree For Solving Global Problems Neem (Azadirachta indica) has worldwide medicinal and agricultural applications as a non-toxic alternative to synthetic chemicals for both curing and preventing disease. MEDICINAL uses of neem: ANTIPATHOGEN- effects are selective against parasites: INSECTS (eg Head Lice, Whitefly, Weevil, Caterpillars, Fleas, Moths), WORMS, FUNGI (eg Athletes Foot, Yeast Infection), BACTERIA (eg Leprosy, Tuberculosis) and VIRUS (eg Malaria, Flu) IMMUNO-MODULATOR, ANTICANCEROUS, ANTIVIRAL, ANTIFUNGAL, ANTIALLERGEN, ANTIDIABETIC, CNS EFFECT, ANTIHEPATOTOXIC (liver), WOUND HEALING, CARDIO-VASCULAR, SKIN DISEASES (eg eczema, psoriasis), ANTI-HEMORRHOIDS, ANTI-PYRETIC (fever), ANTI-HISTAMINE, ANTI-ARTHRITIC, ANTI-INFERTILITY, CONTRACEPTIVE, ANTI-OXIDANT, ANTI-LEPROTIC, AGRICULTURAL uses: STORAGE OF GRAINS WOOD FISHERIES PESTICIDE (kills Threadworms (Nematodes), repels Slugs and snails, but is beneficial for spiders, bees, wasps, ladybirds, birds, bats and earthworms) ANTI-AFLATOXIN (toxin produced by fungus on many common commercial crops such as cotton) FERTILISER FORESTRY uses: Improvement of soil, Wind breaker, Mulching... HOUSEHOLD: Pest repellent, Fuel, Soap... THE VIDEO SOURCES ARE BOTH CANADIAN DOCUMENTARIES 1. The Nature of Things with David Suzuki (1994) This 46-minute film focuses primarily on the use of neem as insecticide and the discovery of Azadirachtin: Neem Trees are used for reforestation, because it can grow well in dry conditions and sheds leaves all year round. Neem is mentioned in the Indian Vedas. Neem is beneficial for all human skin disorders, the skin of animals and plants and the skin of the Earth. Neem sticks are used as tooth brushes, and neem extracts in toothpaste. Cavities & Periodontitis are caused by bacteria which are killed by neem (ANTIBACTERIAL). Neem is ANTI-INFLAMMATORY & ANTI-ULCEROGENIC (cures inflammation and ulcers). Fed to livestock it is nutritious, medicinal and ANTHELMINTIC (expels parasitic worms). It is part of sustainable agriculture as a fertilizer & pesticide. Totally non-toxic to plants, people, birds, fish. In the fight against malaria, neem acts both as insect repellent & an ANTIMALARIAL (anti-viral oral treatment for infection and relief of symptoms). Alternative to conventional pesticides (more effective, non-toxic, selective). There is no need for farmers to isolate active ingredients for synthesis. Neem contains hundreds of beneficial compounds complete with packaging. Why were attempts made by large pharmaceutical companies to restrict its use? 2. The Corporation (Mark Achbar 2003) Vandana Shiva talking about freedom from intellectual property laws. Governments and corporations were restricting use of Neem, so people all over the world successfully fought back. THE CHALLENGE NOW FOR NEEM- is against monoculture plantation projects that are funded by corporations. Neem has an invaluable role in the biodiversity of our Ecosphere. To grow it in isolation does not benefit other plants or the Neem Trees.. We must cultivate healthy Wild Neem Trees which live with other wildlife and help to support it. Large Corporate Neem Plantations damage land and produce inferior trees, while paying workers slave wages. THE PROBLEMS WITH PLANTATION NEEM- Neem's ability to hold water may cause damage to the water table, The collection of nutrients on top soil may cause salination of the soil. The neem trees do not have optimal conditions to mature properly and do not generate the same variety of active components. The land is owned by corporations, who do not pay workers a fair wage. www.earthworkstrading.co.uk is an excellent UK-based supplier of wild neem from Africa other sources of information: "Neem: The Divine Tree : Azadirachta Indica" by Harbans Singh Puri - 1999 "A TREE FOR SOLVING GLOBAL PROBLEMS" -National Research Council,Washington,D.C. 1992.
