[View \| Download]	Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks 1974 Seasons in the Sun" was a worldwide hit song for Terry Jacks in 1974. It was first released in the United States and Canada early in the year, and rose to number one in America by March 2. An earlier recording appeared on The Kingston Trio's 1963 album, Time to Think. The song had also been done by English band The Fortunes in 1968, and by Pearls Before Swine in 1970/71. The song was based on "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man"), written by Jacques Brel in 1961. Brel's song was translated into English by poet Rod McKuen and this version was first recorded by Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio, but it did not sell. The Beach Boys also recorded the song but it was never released. Terry Jacks, who had participated in the Beach Boys recording, and who had in fact introduced the song to the group, rewrote part of the lyrics to "lighten them up." [View \| Download]	Captured Lightning: 2.2 million volt Lichtenberg Figure Sculpture You can get a complete complete explanation about how these spectacular specimens are created by visiting: http://www.capturedlightning.com/frames/lichtenbergs.html The interior of this 18" x 18" x 1" piece of Plexiglas was charged to about 2.2 million volts (MV) by bombarding it with electrons from a 5 million electron volt (MeV) particle accelerator. This traps a layer of excess negative charge about half way through the specimen. When we manually discharge it, the trapped electrons escape with a brilliant flash and a loud bang. The hot, lightning-like discharges create thousands of microscopic channels and fractures inside the acrylic. The result is a branching "Captured Lightning" sculpture (or Lichtenberg Figure). This fractal 2D form has a fractal dimension of about 1.7. This video was captured and edited by Terry Blake. The specimen was owned and discharged by Jeff Larson during our 2005 production run. [View \| Download]	Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks 1974 Seasons in the Sun" was a worldwide hit song for Terry Jacks in 1974. It was first released in the United States and Canada early in the year, and rose to number one in America by March 2. An earlier recording appeared on The Kingston Trio's 1963 album, Time to Think. The song had also been done by English band The Fortunes in 1968, and by Pearls Before Swine in 1970/71. The song was based on "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man"), written by Jacques Brel in 1961. Brel's song was translated into English by poet Rod McKuen and this version was first recorded by Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio, but it did not sell. The Beach Boys also recorded the song but it was never released. Terry Jacks, who had participated in the Beach Boys recording, and who had in fact introduced the song to the group, rewrote part of the lyrics to "lighten them up." Jacks' revisions tended to add a bit of ambiguity as to the nature of the storyteller's demise, allowing listeners the option to choose whether the death is from suicide over a failed life - quite possibly to escape drug addiction - or someone accepting death from natural causes, or cancer. References to a cheating wife were also removed. It was first recorded as a demo at Pathway Studios, North London, and quickly acquired a following after it was put in the rotation at Radio London. It did not take long for the popularity to find its way to record executives, and Dire Straits were offered a contract with Phonogram, a British record company. The song was then re-recorded and released in both the United Kingdom and the United States, though the demo version remained on the original UK Vertigo single. It entered the American music pop charts in early 1979. Unusually, the success of this single release came more than six months after the relatively unheralded release of the band's debut album in October 1978. BBC Radio were unwilling to play the song due to its high lyrical content; after it became a U.S.A. hit, however, their line softened. The song reached the top 10 in both the UK and the U.S., reaching number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped drive sales of the album, which also became a hit. [View \| Download]	Captured Lightning: 2.2 million volt Lichtenberg Figure Sculpture You can get a complete complete explanation about how these spectacular specimens are created by visiting: http://www.capturedlightning.com/frames/lichtenbergs.html The interior of this 18" x 18" x 1" piece of Plexiglas was charged to about 2.2 million volts (MV) by bombarding it with electrons from a 5 million electron volt (MeV) particle accelerator. This traps a layer of excess negative charge about half way through the specimen. When we manually discharge it, the trapped electrons escape with a brilliant flash and a loud bang. The hot, lightning-like discharges create thousands of microscopic channels and fractures inside the acrylic. The result is a branching "Captured Lightning" sculpture (or Lichtenberg Figure). This fractal 2D form has a fractal dimension of about 1.7. This video was captured and edited by Terry Blake. The specimen was owned and discharged by Jeff Larson during our 2005 production run.
