Mumia Abu-Jamal -- Another Reagan, Another America!

But perhaps the greatest tragedy of the Reagan era may be the deep suffering of the poor and working people of Latin and Central America. There, Reagan unleashed a terrorist army of psychopaths who ravaged the nations of Nicaragua, of El Salvador, of Honduras, and beyond. Reagan, ever the actor, tried to paint the so-called *contras* as "freedom fighters", who he likened to "our Founding Fathers." They were, in fact, mostly members of the dreaded *La Guardia Nacional*, the former Nicaraguan dictator, Anastasio Somoza's henchmen, who were described by the Colombian diplomat, Clara Nieto as "nothing more than gangs of terrorists and assassins" [Nieto, *Masters of War* (7 Stories: 2003), p. 329]. The Reagan administration, stung by critics, rushed to change the image of the *contras*, and used the CIA to create a nicer-seeming 'contra' movement. They unleashed a group that waged US-supported atrocities against the country. This group, who some called the "Key Biscayne Mafia" erected "its own courts, its own prisons, its own torture chambers and clandestine cemeteries where it buried those it executed," according to Nieto.

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- Never Again? Really?

In international law, the Geneva Conventions, which were originally written in 1864, were amended and expanded in 1949, largely as a direct result of the experiences of the war, to protect civilians from the powers of a State, and to specifically outlaw torture. The 1949 conventions specifically protected civilians, and prisoners, and excluded war as a government pretext to violate such human rights

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- The Puppet Makers! The Message Stupid!

Ex-CIA officer Slams US Allegations against Iran as Sham US Creating False pretexts for Another War In an alarming exposure of the acceleration and urgency of the American war party's push towards catastrophic war with Iran, Philip Giraldi, former CIA counter terrorism officer, in an interview [1] on 24th July with Anti War Radio debunked the NeoCons' repeated myth of Iran's support for AlQaeda as a pretext for war. Whilst acknowledging Iran's helpfulness in trying to establish security in both Afghanistan and Iraq, Giraldi spoke of the United States' hypocritical and illegal support for terrorist separatists groups inside Iran, and various plans and scenarios which have been drawn up to destroy Iran's military and economic infrastructure by massive bombardment, with the use of nuclear bombs a real and stated possibility. Giraldi refuted the assumption that sharing hostilities towards the US, placed Iran and AlQaeda in the same camp and sharing similar agenda, arguing that Iran followed a very different agenda in its dealings with the US. He emphasised both the fact of Iranians' helpfulness in Iraq, in terms of pushing for greater stability, and also their help and cooperation in Afghanistan, as well as the reality of the deep hostilities between Shiia Iran and Sunni extremism of AlQaeda. Giraldi recalled the major attack against the Iranian consulate general in Afghanistan by the Taliban, a close ally of AlQaeda, in which 11 Iranian diplomats were killed, and the regular AlQaeda violent attacks against Shiia population in Iraq, and concluded that a Shiia Iranian-AlQaeda alliance was not a plausible possibility. http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=6434 The Cold War Between Washington and Tehran by Noam Chomsky In the Cold War-like mentality that prevails in Washington, Tehran is portrayed as the pinnacle in the so-called Shiite Crescent that stretches from Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon, through Shiite southern Iraq and Syria. And again unsurprisingly, the "surge" in Iraq and escalation of threats and accusations against Iran is accompanied by grudging willingness to attend a conference of regional powers, with the agenda limited to Iraq—more narrowly, to attaining U.S. goals in Iraq. Presumably this minimal gesture toward diplomacy is intended to allay the growing fears and anger elicited by Washington's heightened aggressiveness, with forces deployed in position to attack Iran and regular provocations and threats. For the United States, the primary issue in the Middle East has been and remains effective control of its unparalleled energy resources. Access is a secondary matter. Once the oil is on the seas it goes anywhere. Control is understood to be an instrument of global dominance. http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?itemid=13388

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- Why Social Security's Fall is Near!

Everybody wins -- except the workers. This war against workers, unless it is vigorously opposed by workers fighting in their own class interests, will result in nightmares where elderly must work until they drop dead. For, with no pensions, and no social security, how can it be otherwise? This business-friendly, labor-hating government is actually trying to set up a judicial, administrative, media regime that will undo the New Deal. After the Great Depression of 1929, mass movements, such as rent riots, sit-ins, marches, and great demonstrations, struck the country. One such movement was for pensions for those who spent their lives working in hard toil. Movements such as these in the 1930s changed things. Scholars Frances Fox Piven and (the late) Richard Cloward, noted, in *The New Class War: Reagan's Attack on the Welfare State and Its Consequences* (Pantheon Books: 1982/1985 [revised/expanded edition]), p. 118: "In other words, the movements changed reality; they transformed the State."

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- Is Fascism Possible Here?

Fascism. The very word evokes dark, menacing images of troops, marching in lockstep, in support of a terrible, malevolent ideology. In a word, it suggests the followers of Mussolini in Italy, or Hitler in Germany. To most of us, its very mention suggests its foreign nature; its Otherness. Therein lies its danger. For, because it is seen as a foreign ideology, the inevitable idea arises: "It can't happen here." Those who say this, either don't know, or don't want to know, American history. They prefer the safe myths, to the ugly truths of how this country came to be what it is. What is fascism? In short, it is the merger of state and corporate interests. Fascism is more than a funny-sounding word; it is dyed deep into the fabric of American life; and creeps forward today, under cover of 'Law.'

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- What Globalization Really Means!

During the hard-fought Haitian Revolution, which occurred roughly a decade after the U.S. Revolution, the government of George Washington, which talked about 'liberty to all men', entered the conflict, but not on the side of liberty. The Washington Administration authorized the grant of $400,000 — a vast sum in the 1800s — not to support the forces of freedom, but to the white planters. They sent money to the French for arms and food to support their resistance to the uprising. America's secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Constitution, did the actual paperwork. When it came to slavery or freedom, the Americans, slaveowners themselves, chose slavery to support.

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- Why does a war begin?

Brzezinski: Yes. According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise: Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention.

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- Water Wars

Veronica Lake, a Michigan-based environmental activist, has noted that corporations acquire the world's water by three major methods: a) by "water mining" the underground aquifers, or deep sources of many of the world's streams or rivers; b) by leasing state and government water systems and collecting revenues; and c) by "managing" city water systems.

Michael Parenti -- Creating The Poor?

"To oppose the policies of a government does not mean you are against the country or the people that the government supposedly represents. Such opposition should be called what it really is: democracy, or democratic dissent, or having a critical perspective about what your leaders are doing. Either we have the right to democratic dissent and criticism of these policies or we all lie down and let the leader, the Fuhrer, do what is best, while we follow uncritically, and obey whatever he commands. That's just what the Germans did with Hitler, and look where it got them." Michael Parenti

The US War Machine -- 1 of 3

THE U.S. WAR MACHINE. Despite increasing anger and resentmentment resulting from both the invasion of Iraq and support of Israel's slaughter of civilians in Lebanon, the U.S. war machine marches on. U.S. factories are producing the tools of death at a startling pace. Why is it that even with no enemies to threaten U.S. supremacy, extremists in Washington seem intent on perpetual war? Could it be that Americans simply do not connect their role in building, selling and supporting the instruments of death with the horrors being inflicted in the Middle East? We also premiere an original short film titled "We, The Sheeple," about the nation's loss of integrity.

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- The War Against Us All

This isn't just a war on Iraqis or Afghanis or even Arabs or Muslims. It is ultimately a war on us all. That's because the billions and billions of dollars that are being spent on this war—the cost of tanks, rocketry, bullets, and yes, even salaries for the 125,000-plus troops—is money that will never be spent on education, on health care, on the reconstruction of crumbling public housing, or to train and place the millions of workers who have lost manufacturing jobs in the past three years alone.
