El término fue introducido por la propaganda nazi, que contaba al Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico como el primer Reich o imperio, al Imperio alemán de 1871 como el segundo y a su propio régimen como el tercero. Esto fue hecho para sugerir una vuelta gloriosa de la Alemania anterior tras la República de Weimar instaurada en 1919 y que, sin embargo, nunca fue disuelta oficialmente por el nuevo régimen.
