In Italia viene spesso riproposto da diverse emittenti.Il telefilm racconta le avventure di due Chippies (agenti della California Highway Patrol) di pattuglia sulle immense freeway di Los Angeles. I due agenti, che vestono caratteristiche uniformi color kaki e montano due motociclette Kawasaki 900 Police nelle prime due serie e poi Kawasaki 1000 Police, sono interpretati da Erik Estrada (agente Francis Llwellyn Poncherello) e Larry Wilcox (agente Jonathan Baker). Al fianco della coppia si succedono vari personaggi: il sergente Getraer (Robert Pine), Brodie Greer (Baricza), Paul Linke (Grossman) per tutto il periodo, Harlan il meccanico (Lou Wagner) dalla seconda stagione, Brianne Leary (2° stagione), Randi Oakes (3° - 5° stagione) e Tina Gayle (6° stagione) nei panni rispettivamente di Sindy Cahill, Bonnie Clark e Kathy Linahan. In seguito Larry Wilcox abbandona il cast nel 1982. Tom Reilly veniva scelto per il ruolo dell'agente Bobby Nelson successore di Jon Baker al fianco di Ponch nella sesta serie. Infine anche Tom Reilly abbandona il telefilm e così dalla terzultima puntata Bruce Penhall (Bruce Nelson) diplomatosi all'accademia diviene compagno di Ponch. La centrale di polizia dove è stato girato il telefilm è la vera Central LOS ANGELES AREA della California Highway Patrol all'incrocio tra la Harbor e Santa Monica Freeway al numero 777 di West Washington Blvd, oggi totalmente ristrutturata. Dalla Terza Stagione la gran parte delle scene sono state girate in una identica centrale ricostruita fedelmente presso gli MGM studios.
