World Music Portraits - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 1/6 - Music of Pakistan - Pakistanis Ruling the World Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (October 13, 1948 August 16, 1997), was a Punjabi musician from Pakistan, primarily a singer of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis (a mystical tradition within Islam). He featured in Time magazine's 2006 list of 'Asian Heroes'. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948 in the city of Faisalabad, Pakistan. He was the fifth child and first son of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, a musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and Qawwal. Khan's family, which included his four older sisters and his younger brother, Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan grew up in central Lyallpur. In 1979, Khan married his first cousin, Naheed (the daughter of Fateh Ali Khan's brother, Salamat Ali Khan); they had one daughter, Nida. Khan began by learning to play tabla alongside his father before progressing to learn Raag Vidya and Bolbandish. He then went on to learn to sing within the classical framework of khayal. Khan's training with his father was cut short when his father died in 1964, leaving Khan's paternal uncles, Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, to complete his training. Khan teamed with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ in 1985, with Canadian musician Michael Brook (on the albums Mustt Mustt (1990) and Night Song (1996))[3],[unreliable source?] and with Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder in 1995 on two songs for the soundtrack to Dead Man Walking. He also contributed to the soundtrack of Natural Born Killers. Peter Gabriel's Real World label later released five albums of Nusrat's traditional Qawwali, together with some of his experimental work which included the albums Mustt Mustt and Star Rise. Nusrat provided vocals for The Prayer Cycle, which was put together by Jonathan Elias, but died before the vocals could be completed. Alanis Morissette was brought in to sing with his unfinished vocals. He also performed traditional Qawwali before international audiences at several WOMAD world music festivals and the single Dam Mast Qalandar was remixed by electronic trip hop group Massive Attack in 1998. His album Intoxicated Spirit was nominated for a Grammy award in 1997 for best traditional folk album. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan holds the world record for the largest recorded output by a Qawwali artist—a total of 125 albums as of 2001. Khan was taken ill with kidney and liver failure on August 11, 1997 in London, England while on the way to Los Angeles in order to receive a kidney transplant. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest at Cromwell Hospital, London, on Saturday, August 16, 1997, aged 48. After his death, the song "Solemn Prayer", on which Nusrat provided vocals, was used by Peter Gabriel on his album Up and in the soundtrack to the film Blood Diamond - Music of Pakistan Tags: Ali, Artist, Best, Documentary, Faisalabad, Fateh, From, Great, Greatest, Heaven, Huge, Khan, Legend, Lollywood, Music, Musician, Musik, NFAK, Nusrat, One, Only, Pak, Paki, Pakistan, Pakistani, Pakistanis, Part, Portraits, Qawali, Qawwal, Qawwali, Real, Singer, Solo, Sufi, Sufism, Ture, UFAK, Urdu, Ustaad, Ustad, Voice, World, all, and, fantastic, late, remember, remembered, success, time 1 Downloads - Last from: (Your Blog here!) |

Storming of the Temple VIDEO IS FLAGGED PLEASE LOGIN/CREATE ACCOUNT TO WATCH *MUST WATCH* "The army went into Darbar Sahib not to eliminate a political figure or political movement but to suppress the culture of a people, to attack their hearts, and to strike a blow at their spirit and self-confidence." - Joyce Pettigrew "A Hindu should be a firm Hindu, a Muslim should be a firm Muslim, and a Sikh should be a firm Sikh" - Baba Jarnail Singh Jee Bhinderanwale A documentary aired on the history channel about the events that took place in 1984, in Punjab. This was when Indian government killed thousands of innocent people to destroy the Sikh spirit, and sacrilegiously stormed the most famous shrine of the Sikhs, without obeying any rules of respect or regard. Sikhism is a religion distinct from both Hinduism and Islam. Sikhs believe in One God. The government intentionally planned the attack on the Shaheedi Divas of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, a religious holiday of the Sikhs, when pilgrims would be packed in the temple. 40 other Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) were also attacked on that day. Baba Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was situated in the Darbar Sahib Complex because he was conducting a 'Dharam Yudh Morcha' a procession for more rights for Sikhs and autonomy for Punjab and other states in India. Historically all 'Morchas' are done from a Darbar Sahib, and carrying weapons is part of the Sikh religion for defense. Indira Gandhi resented Sikh leaders for their opposition to her dictorial rule on the nation. She then declared dictorial rule on the state of Punjab by imposing government rule and media censorship. The carnage following the justice given to Indira Gandhi was a state-sponsored genocide, which was instigated by politicians. No justice has been given to those 1984 victims. History of Darbar Sahib Attacks: Ahmed Shah Abdali, Massa Ranghar, General Dyer, (Governor O'Dwer), and Indira Gandhi have all been oppressors who have attacked the holy city of Amritsar. These have all been an attack on the spirit of the people. Oppressors have never been spared when attacking this holy city, and they have always been fought against. History repeated itself when Indira Gandhi was given justice by her own bodyguards, the same way Massa Ranghar was given justice by Bhai Mehtab Singh. "I have never initiated any attack with my tongue, or my pen, or with my sword. I only answer back or retaliate." Baba Jarnail Singh ji Bhindranwale. jawab e Shikwa(Complete) - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan(Solo) Jawab-e-Shikwa (The answer to the complaint) Words spoken from the heart never fail to have effect; Sacred and pure their origin, on lofty heights their sights are set. They have no wings and yet they have power to fly; They rise from the dust and pierce through the sky. So headstrong and insolent was my love, so much on mischief bent, So outspoken my plaint, it tore through the firmament. The aged vault of heaven heard. There is someone somewhere, said he. The planets spoke, Here on these ancient heights someone must be. Not here, said the moon, it must be someone from the earth below. Spoke the Milky Way, It must be someone hidden here we do not know. Only the gatekeeper of Eden did some of my plaint recognize And understood that I was the man thrown out of paradise. Even to the angels the voice came as a complete surprise; Nor was the mystery unveiled to other dwellers of the skies. (They wondered): Could celestial heights have become the aim of mans striving? Could this handful of dust have learnt the art of flying? These earth-dwellers, how little of manners do they know! How cheeky and insolent are these habitants of regions down below! He even rails against Allah, he has become so proud; Is he the same Adam before whom the angels bowed? He knows about things, their quantity and quality; Yes, these he knows, but nothing of the secret of humility. Their power of speech men always proudly flaunt, But of the way of the speaking they are quite ignorant. Spoke the Voice: Your tale is indeed full of sorrow; Your tears tremble at the brim and are ready to flow. Your cry of lament the sky has rung; What cunning your impassioned heart has lent your tongue! So eloquently did you word your plaint, you made it sound like praise. To talk on equal terms with Us, man to celestial heights did rise. Limitless is Our bounty, but none for it will pray. Theres no one on the seekers path; to whom do We point the way? Not one proved worthy of the care with which they were raised; You are not the clay of which another Adam could be made. If there were one deserving, Wed raise him to regal splendor, To those who seek, We would unveil a new world of wonder. You have no strength in your hands; in your hearts God has no place; On the name of My messenger, you people have brought disgrace. Destroyers of false gods are gone; only the idol-maker thrives; The sons of Abraham have departed, Azars idolatrous breed survives. Strange the company you keep; from new vats a new vintage wine you brew; You have built yourselves a new Kaaba with new idols because you yourselves are new. There were days when this very Allah you regarded as sublime; The tulip of Islam was the pride of the desert in blossom time. There were days when every Muslim loved the only Allah he knew; Once upon a time He was your Beloved; the same Beloved you now call untrue. Now go and pledge your faith to serve some local deity And confine Muhammads following to some one locality. Heavy weighs the light of dawn, how loathe you are to rise? Why protest you love Us? It is your slumber that you prize. On your carefree spirit Ramadans fast does heavily press; Ask yourselves and answer: Is this the way of faithfulness? A people are bound by faith; without faith they cease to be; If nothing binds you, you are like meteors, not stars in a galaxy.
