Ye Ye Cathrina (Original) - (1971) - Henry D'Souza & Helen D'Cruz Shri Henry D'Souza was born in Bassrikatte, a small town in Goa. He had his primary and secondary education in prestigious Catholic schools and colleges. After graduating from St. Aloysius College in Mangalore, he graduated in LLB from the University of Bombay. He is based in Mumbai and by profession a Financial Consultant. Initially he engaged in a career in journalism, but eventually landed in a promising music career after joining a western music group in 1964. In 1964, he sang his first Konkani (spoken language in Goa) song on All India Radio. Since then he has sung more than 700 songs. In Mangalore he has been honoured with the title Sangeeth Samrat, and in Mumbai he has been honoured with the title of "Kala Ratna". In 1971, Henry made history when he recorded the song "Ye Ye Cathrina" with Helen D'Cruz on HMV label. The song became an instant hit on All India Radio, and also in Sri Lanka on SLBC (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) popularized by the legendary broadcaster Vernon Corea. The song was later sung in Sinhalese by Desmond De Silva & Indrani Perera, and also another version by Luke Henricus. Cathrina also has been sung in Portuguese and Spanish. Note : Pl. note that female artist in the video is not Helen D'Cruz. Unfortunately, I was not able to find a photo of Helen. St Anthony - Anton Jones Sri Lanka has many devotees of St.Anthony and many churches have been erected in his honour. Most popular one is in Kochchikade Colombo. The little chappel of the church was built in the early 1800s and in 1828 the famous statue of St. Anthony was brought from Goa. The church since has become a monument of love and devotion to St. Anthony raised by all, rich and poor, of the whole country. This song is dedicated to St. Anthony, sung by Baila King Anton Jones. Anton Jones was born on the 3rd June1937 at Huftsdorp Colombo. He received his education at St. Sebastian's English mixed school. In 1959, he joined the legal firm Julius and Creasy in Hulftsdorp as an English Stenographer. In 1963, he joined the Bank Of Ceylon and was employed until his retirement in 1997. His first radio programme with Radio Ceylon was in 1958 and sang ballades which were often meaniningful historical events that was loved by his fans. Through his uncle V.V. Kerner, an accomplished violinist, he was introduced to the God Father of Sri Lankan Baila, Wally Bastiansz, and played as a back up singer to Wally. His first record was 'Mini Gawuma' a 45RPM on Philips label, released by the Gowri Corporation, owned by Patrick Corea. He rose to popularity in the 70s and 80s through his songs about historic events such as DC8 Plane Crash, the tragic boat accident in river Nilwala etc. He has been a part of the Sri Lankan music scene for almost six decades and is still going strong. He is married to Iris and have two sons who are living in France and two daughters who are happily married.
