[View \| Download]	Field Guide to the Common Marine Algae of the Bocas del Toro Area, Panama http://striweb.si.edu/taxonomy_training/past_courses/2008/2008_phycology.html . This videoclip shows part of the preliminary "Field Guide to Common Algae of the Bocas del Toro Area". 11 graduate and 2 undergraduate students enrolled in the Tropical Field Phycology Workshop held at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) at Bocas del Toro, Caribbean Panama, 9-23 July 2008. Instructors and students collected multiple samples of over 200 algal species by SCUBA diving, snorkeling and intertidal surveys. As part of the training in tropical taxonomy, many of the collected samples were used by the students to create this guide. The Field Guide can be downloaded at: http://striweb.si.edu/PDFs/bocas_field_guides/algal_booksmall.pdf. The aim of this course was designed to orient participants to the biodiversity of tropical marine floras through field and laboratory work. Specifically, it emphasized the development or enhancement of practical skills essential for identification, characterization and preservation of tropical marine macroalgae (seaweeds). Sampling forays in diverse environments (e.g., mangrove habitats, seagrass beds, coral reefs, sponge communities) on protected and exposed shorelines throughout the Bocas del Toro Archipelago complemented morphological and molecular investigations in the laboratory. Funding was made possible by a grant from the Smithsonian's Marine Science Network, with additional support from the National Science Foundation's Biodiversity Surveys and Inventories Program, the NSF Partnership for the Enhancement of Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET) Program, and the Smithsonian's Institution's DNA Barcode Initiative. The Workshop was organized by Rachel Collin (STRI); lectures on barcoding were provided by Amy Driskell (Smithsonian Institution); and the Phycology lectures were given by Brian Wysor (Roger Williams University), Wilson Freshwater (University of North Carolina at Wilmington) and Suzanne Fredericq (University of Louisiana at Lafayette). I have spent a lot of time practicing scales and also learning about keys and Music Theory. I have also worked through several books that teach guitar licks all over the fingerboard. I have good technique, I have learnt how to play fast lines, tapping, sweep picking, etc. but, I still just cant seem to play a nice long melody during a solo. When I listen to top-notch players like Steve Vai or just good all around guitar players such as David Gilmour they seem to have a flow to their playing that I just cant seem to obtain. Learn scale patterns as well as octave templates. Practice for hours to gain a solid technique for them all over the guitar neck. 2). Listen to the solos of great guitar players, and try your best to understand their use of space and economy in their solos. Also, spend time listening to other instruments as well as vocal melody lines. Do a good deal of Transcription work also. 3). Understand that feelings and emotions play a huge role in developing solos that capture a listeners attention. When you feel inspired... PLAY GUITAR! 4). Master the use of phrasing devices such as; slides, bends, legato, vibrato, double-stops, harmonics... etc. 5). Understand the relationships between scale degrees and the chords being performed at a given point in time. Work very hard at developing the ability to target specific notes as you play. It takes awhile to learn how to do well... but it's worth the effort once you begin to see the results! I have spent a lot of time practicing scales and also learning about keys and Music Theory. I have also worked through several books that teach guitar licks all over the fingerboard. I have good technique, I have learnt how to play fast lines, tapping, sweep picking, etc. but, I still just cant seem to play a nice long melody during a solo. When I listen to top-notch players like Steve Vai or just good all around guitar players such as David Gilmour they seem to have a flow to their playing that I just cant seem to obtain. Learn scale patterns as well as octave templates. Practice for hours to gain a solid technique for them all over the guitar neck. 2). Listen to the solos of great guitar players, and try your best to understand their use of space and economy in their solos. Also, spend time listening to other instruments as well as vocal melody lines. Do a good deal of Transcription work also. 3). Understand that feelings and emotions play a huge role in developing solos that capture a listeners attention. When you feel inspired... PLAY GUITAR! 4). Master the use of phrasing devices such as; slides, bends, legato, vibrato, double-stops, harmonics... etc. 5). Understand the relationships between scale degrees and the chords being performed at a given point in time. Work very hard at developing the ability to target specific notes as you play. It takes awhile to learn how to do well... but it's worth the effort once you begin to see the results!
