Tras la anexión de Texas en 1845, la llegada al Océano Pacífico se produce gracias a la colonización del territorio de Oregón en 1846 y la cesión por parte de México de una inmensa extensión al suroeste del país. En medio queda una amplia franja que, extendida de sur a norte, comprende las llanuras centrales, tierras ocupadas desde tiempo inmemorial por etnias nativas como los dakota, crow, cheyenne o comanche. A partir de 1853, las necesidades de comunicación entre las costas Este y Oeste plantean varias rutas de ferrocarril que atravesarán territorio indio y cuya construcción supondrá el exterminio de las manadas de búfalos, vitales para la economía india. Según un tratado firmado en 1868 entre el gobierno estadounidense y la tribu sioux, los territorios de las Montañas Negras y del Yellowston se cedían a perpetuidad a los indios, si bien en 1873 la entrada de buscadores de oro en su territorio acabó por desatar las hostilidades. El general Sheridan fue comisionado por el gobierno estadounidense para dirigir las operaciones, que se desarrollarán a lo largo de 1876, y que tendrán como objetivo reducir a la unión de indios sioux y cheyenne comandada por Caballo Loco y Toro Sentado. La Campaña de 1876 habría de consistir en el despliegue de tres columnas militares que, partiendo de los fuertes Ellis, Lincolny Fetterman caerían sobre Little Bighorn, el lugar donde estaban establecidos los indios rebeldes. Deseoso de dirigir su propia unidad, Custer recibió el encargo de adentrarse en el valle de Little Bighorn, a donde llegó tras una agotadora marcha nocturna. Sus órdenes eran esperar los refuerzos de Gibbon con vistas a atacar al día siguiente, si bien, tras avistar un campamento indio a 25 kilómetros, decidió emprender el ataque antes de que lo levantaran, estimando que apenas albergaría a 1500 guerreros. Organizó el ataque dividiendo sus fuerzas: tres escuadrones dirigidos por el comandante Reno atacarían el campamento por el sur; otros tres, a las órdenes del capitán Bentin marcharían hacia el sudoeste para atacar cualquier posición india que hallasen; el teniente MacDugall, con un escuadrón, quedaría en la retaguardia y el propio Custer, al mando de cinco escuadrones, marcharía hacia el norte y se ocultaría tras las colinas para atacar a los indios cuando estos marcharan sobre Bentin. Sin embargo, sus cálculos resultaron errados. Caballo Loco conocía la posición de Custer tras las colinas. Además, tras constatar que los indios no se disponían a levantar el campamento, comprendió que había dividido a su ejército para nada. Tras avistar las tiendas de los sioux, el comandante Reno ordenó un ataque pie a tierra, que fue rápidamente repelido y causó numerosas bajas. Ante el contraataque indio, se vio obligado a replegarse, encontrándose con los escuadrones de Bentin. Tras rechazar el ataque de Reno, los guerreros indios se reorganizaron para repeler la ofensiva de Custer. Así, al bajar desde su posición en las colinas, Custer se encontró cercado por unos 1500 indios y en terreno descubierto, lo que le obliga a adoptar posiciones defensivas, encaminando a sus hombres hacia la derecha para alcanzar una colina cercana donde parapetarse y esperar refuerzos. Perseguido por 1500 guerreros mientras realizaba la ascensión, desde la cima aparecieron otros 1500 comandados por Caballo Loco. Custer, atrapado en un círculo mortal no pudo evitar que sus tropas, divididas por el ataque de los indios, cayeran en menos de media hora. El 7º de Caballería había quedado deshecho, siendo su único superviviente "Comanche", el caballo de un oficial. Pese a su triunfo, los sioux y otras tribus indias nada pudieron hacer para contener el avance de los colonos blancos y el ferrocarril. Tras perder en dos batallas, Caballo Loco se rindió y fue confinado, falleciendo a bayonetazos unas semanas más tarde. Toro Sentado huyó al Canadá con unos pocos hombres. El acto final de resistencia india se produjo en la batalla de Wounded Knee, el 29 de diciembre de 1890, en la que las tribus indias resistentes fueron masacradas.
