Es uno de los Yamim Noraim (hebreo, "los Días del Temor"). Los Yamim Noraim consisten en Rosh Hashaná (Año Nuevo), los diez días del arrepentimiento, y culminan con Yom Kipur. En el calendario hebreo, Yom Kipur comienza en el anochecer del noveno día del mes de Tishrei, y continúa hasta el anochecer del siguiente día. Yom Kipur es el día judío del arrepentimiento, considerado el día más santo y más solemne del año. Su tema central es la expiación y la reconciliación. La comida, la bebida, el baño, y las relaciones conyugales están prohibidos. El ayuno comienza en el ocaso, y termina al anochecer del día siguiente. Los servicios de oración de Yom Kipur comienzan con la oración conocida como "Kol Nidre", que debe ser recitada antes de la puesta del sol. El Kol Nidre (en arameo "todos los votos") es un público abrogamiento de votos religiosos hechos por judíos durante el año precedente. Esto sólo concierne a los votos incumplidos hechos entre una persona y Dios, y no anula votos hechos entre personas. Un talit (manto de oración cuadrangular) se pone para oraciones de la tarde - el único servicio de la tarde del año en el cual se hace esto. El culto de Ne'ilah es un culto especial sostenido sólo durante el día de Yom Kipur, y marca el cierre de las fiesta. Yom Kipur culmina con el sonar del shofár, que marca la conclusión del ayuno. Siempre se observa como un día festivo, tanto dentro como fuera de los límites de la tierra de Israel. Al contrario de la creencia popular, Yom Kipur no es un día triste. Los judíos sefardíes (los judíos de origen español, portugués y norteafricano) se refieren a estas fiestas como "el Ayuno Blanco". Los ritos para Yom Kipur se presentan en el decimosexto capítulo de Levítico (cf. Éxodo 30:10; Levítico 23:27-31, 25:9; Números 29:7-11). Este era el ayuno más solemne, en el cual ningún alimento podía ser tomado en forma alguna en todo el día, y se prohibían los trabajos serviles. Se celebraba el décimo día de Tishri, que coincide con septiembre/octubre. Los sacrificios eran ofrecidos en el Templo de Jerusalén. The one-hour bloodless battle, known as the Tomatina, left the town awash in a sea of tomato pulp. The town council brought in some 100 tonnes of ripe tomatoes on trucks for the estimated 40,000 tourists who descended on the town of just 9,000 inhabitants for the annual festival, which has taken place for more than 60 years. Many of the participants were shirtless while others wore old clothes, hard hats or goggles. Afterwards, workers hosed down the walls and streets to remove the tomato pulp. Spanish media said the tomatoes cost the town council around 28,000 euros (35,000 dollars), about one third of the overall budget of 70,000 euros for the festival, most of which goes to pay for security, cleaning services, mobile toilets and civil protection. More than 100 police and 120 civil protection volunteers were on hand in case of incidents. The "Tomatina" is held each year in Bunol, located in a fertile region some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of the coastal city of Valencia, Spain's third-largest city, on the last Wednesday in August. The origins of the event are unclear although it is thought to have its roots in a food fight between childhood friends in the mid-1940s in the city. Las cien toneladas de tomates, bien maduros, fueron arrojados por los asistentes en una hora, entre las 11h00 y 12h00 como requiere la tradición. La fiesta se remonta a los años 40, cuando jóvenes frustrados por no participar en las fiestas del pueblo comenzaron a arrojar tomates. Desde entonces, la tradición se perpetuó y dio a esta pequeña ciudad de 10.000 habitantes una relativa y particular celebridad en España y el exterior.
