This is CAD/CAM or computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing, at the high school level. The class was called Tech Ed II at the time, but is an integrated STEM course often called Tech Ed or Engineering or Design & Technology Education. Regardless of the name, students use the design process to solve open ended design challenges to problems. Project based learning without instructions or kits is a highly effective way to increase student innovation capacity, creativity, critical thinking skills, problem solving skills; and also gives students a contextually relevant experience for applying math and science, better illustrating for them the relationships that exist between all subjects when solving problems in real life outside of the classroom. Dewey said education should be for life now, not to prepare students for the future only.
