Il est danseur, acteur, chanteur, compositeur et producteur américain. Après avoir débuté au cinéma en 1983 comme danseur dans Staying Alive, il se fait connaître suite au succès du film Dirty Dancing (pour lequel il écrit et interprète la chanson She's Like the Wind en 1987). Pendant ce temps, il poursuit une carrière artistique et athlétique, comme patineur et acteur dans des pièces écolières. Il étudie la gymnastique au San Jacinto College pendant deux ans. En 1972, il part pour New York City pour terminer ses études de danse. Il est d'abord danseur dans les parades de parc d'attractions Walt Disney. Le 12 juin 1975 il se marie à Lisa Niemi avec laquelle il vit toujours en 2008. En 1979, il fait sa première apparition au cinéma dans le film Skatetown de William A. Levey. En 1983 il danse dans la comédie musicale Staying Alive, aux côtés de John Travolta. Il poursuit avec quelque téléfilms dont Outsiders de Francis Ford Coppola (1983) et Youngblood de Peter Markle (1986). En 1987, il connaît le succès grâce à la comédie romantique Dirty Dancing d'Emile Ardolino où il joue aux côtés de Jennifer Grey le rôle de Johnny Castle, un professeur de danse charismatique, rôle pour lequel il est nominé aux Golden Globe Awards. Il poursuit dans plusieurs films dont Road House de Rowdy Herrington (1990). En 1990, il est l'acteur principal de Ghost de Jerry Zucker aux côtés des actrices Demi Moore et Whoopi Goldberg. En 1991, il est élu par le magazine People « l'homme le plus sexy au monde ». Il joue ensuite le rôle d'un surfeur dans Point Break de Kathryn Bigelow aux côtés de Keanu Reeves, d'un médecin en Inde dans La Cité de la Joie de Roland Joffé, d'une drag queen dans Extravagances et son propre rôle dans The Player de Robert Altman. I started supplying oil to people to treat their medical conditions back in 2003, then in 2007 Christian contacted me about making a documentary about this subject. Il est danseur, acteur, chanteur, compositeur et producteur américain. Après avoir débuté au cinéma en 1983 comme danseur dans Staying Alive, il se fait connaître suite au succès du film Dirty Dancing (pour lequel il écrit et interprète la chanson She's Like the Wind en 1987). Il tourne ensuite dans Ghost en 1990 et dans Point Break en 1991. Au cours des années 1990, il connaît cependant des problèmes de drogue et dalcool. C'est en 2008, à l'âge de 55 ans, que son agent annonce qu'il est atteint d'un cancer du pancréas. Il est le fils d'une danseuse et chorégraphe, Patricia Yvonne Helen et d'un ingénieur, Jesse Wayne Swayze. Il a un frère également acteur, Don Swayze. Le surnom « swayze » est d'origine normande. Jusqu'à l'âge de vingt ans, Swayze a vécu dans l'Oak Forest, à côté de Houston, où il étudie à la St Rose of Lima Catholic School, à la Oak Elementary School, à la Black Middle School et à la Waltrip High School. En 1987, il connaît le succès grâce à la comédie romantique Dirty Dancing d'Emile Ardolino où il joue aux côtés de Jennifer Grey le rôle de Johnny Castle, un professeur de danse charismatique, rôle pour lequel il est nominé aux Golden Globe Awards. Il poursuit dans plusieurs films dont Road House de Rowdy Herrington (1990). En 1990, il est l'acteur principal de Ghost de Jerry Zucker aux côtés des actrices Demi Moore et Whoopi Goldberg. En 1991, il est élu par le magazine People « l'homme le plus sexy au monde ». Il joue ensuite le rôle d'un surfeur dans Point Break de Kathryn Bigelow aux côtés de Keanu Reeves, d'un médecin en Inde dans La Cité de la Joie de Roland Joffé, d'une drag queen dans Extravagances et son propre rôle dans The Player de Robert Altman.
